  re: trade deadline The interleague trading deadline is July 31. What's going on now is waver-wire trades within the same league. It works like this: a player is waved and any team in his league may claim him if they're willing to pay his full salary and give up a compensation pick. The Dodgers waived Puig a week ago, but pulled him off the wire when somebody claimed him. The last place team gets first choice on the waiver wire deals and teams choose from there with the best teams picking last. re: Utley We don't want him. We already have Howie Kendrick, Keke Hernandez, Jose Peraza... Why did we get another 2d baseman? How about some relief pitchers? We lost again yesterday and today, because the bullpen blew a lead. This is NOT a popular trade in LA.
The Dodgers have relieved the Yankess of all the scorn that comes with being the biggest spender in baseball. They are now unquestionably the "Donald Trumps" of MLB. The Utley trade puts Dodgers payroll at $298.5 million and after they pay out performance bonuses in November they are expected to exceed $300 million. Their luxury tax burden is projected to be $44 million, shattering the 2005 Yankee all time record of $34 million. Now that's what you call bleeding Dodger "green". 8)
Mike Fiers no hits the Dodgers...what a gem. 134 pitches that's a lot of pitches for a modern starter. The local announcers were talking in the 7th about whether or not he'd be allowed to finish since he was already in the high 90's for pitch count, then he went on to fan the next 5 Dodgers and ended the game with a SO of a Dodger to boot! It's his first complete game ever in MLB. He's been money for the Astros since he came from the Brewers.
I'm so depressed. That's our 6th road loss in a row. Two guys I've never heard of hit HRs and another guy I've never heard of tossed a no-no. The entire Astros lineup is as anonymous as a Soviet basketball team. In the field they've got Altuve and the seven dwarfs. Their manager, A.J. Hinch, should go directly to the Hall of Fame. He really is genius. re: money How much money have the Dodgers spent on 2nd basemen alone? I don't mind all the money spent......, because it's not my money. But it does appear that they could have avoided all this by simply keeping Dee Gordon...
JO'Co will need some meds ...his staff only gives up 3 hits to the Astro's tonight and lose 3-1. That's got to hurt.
  Our team has now lost 8 in a row on the road. Joc Pederson has been officially benched for the duration in favor of Keke Hernandez and our hopes are fading like the paint job on an old Buick...
Live by the sword, die by the sword. Astros who have been kings of the walk off wins this season...get taken down by a walk off Sac Fly in NYC. Both starters were awesome last night.
Am I the only one who wonders how some veteran pitchers consistently are showing 90+ on radar when in the past their fastballs were in the 88-90 range ? I'm amazed at the huge number of low-to-mid 90s pitchers in MLB. It's as if the radar guns themselves are juiced, but of course that couldn't possibly be the case.
Sid, Sid, they're all clean now ...wink wink...it's better training, better nutrition, healthier lifestyles...yeah that's it! They're all Nolan Ryan clones now!
LOL! To be clear, I'm not talking about the pitchers. I'm talking about the radar guns being juiced to show 92-93 mph for 88-89 mph fastballs. I have a hard time believing that most MLB pitchers suddenly got 4-6 mph faster than they've been their entire careers before this year.
Oh never mind! They must be using old Police radar guns, I know I've never been going as fast as they said I was when stopped!!
OK so I was wondering why there was a bench clearing but no fisticuffs last night after a Gomez fly out. Apparently it's an unwritten rule that you can't flip your bat after making an out in a game where you are hammering the opponent. Not to mention when the Yankees all called it on him he looked over at them and told them to shut up. What was funny is that both bullpens came about half way out into the outfield during this kerfluffle.
The Cubs now are 22 games over .500. They have the 4th best record in MLB. Three of the top 4 (Cards, Pirates, Cubs) are in the NLC. They have a 7.5 game lead over the Giants for the second NL wild card spot. It's starting to look good for the playoffs, but there's more than a month to go, so I'm holding my breath. Speaking of wild card. The AL race for the second spot is red hot. At this point in time, 4 teams are within 2.5 games of the Rangers. It will be an interesting home stretch in both leagues.
With yesterday's doubleheader sweep of the struggling Phils, the Cubs now are 10 games up on the Giants for the #2 wild card spot and 2 games behind the Pirates for the # 1 spot. Go Cubs!
  Cy Young Award will be a close one IMHO. Bumgarner, Kershaw and Wacha have all had a fabulous year, but I think it's coming down to Greinke and Arrieta. Both of them are doing things that haven't been done in decades and it's a coin toss for me.
Funny. Just yesterday, I was having a conversation with a fellow baseball junkie about the Cy Young, and we both agreed it was between Grienke and Arrieta. I commented that although I'm a Cubs fan, I could see either guy winning. Great minds.........
