 In the end, it was a bridge too far. Every team demanded Julio Urias for their stars and the Dodgers said no. Last year, they all demanded Seager. Terry is right, it's not worth giving up the future. In the 1950's, the Dodgers made a deadline deal that will haunt them forever. They traded a young Puerto Rican named Roberto Clemente for SS Don Zimmer... Puig is through. He's so hated by his teammates, that they finally went to management and demanded that he disappear. Remember, he was once kicked off the Cuban national team under similar circumstances. The team had a travel day today and he was late for the bus. That was the final straw. He was informed that he didn't have a seat on the bus and he was ordered to report to AAA Oklahoma City. His future with the Dodgers is zero. It's called, "winning by subtraction." If you can't obtain the best players, you cut the troublemakers... I liked the Dodgers moves today. They subtracted a loser; they kept the young winners; added winners at almost no cost; and provided insurance in RF...
Tigers decided to pass at the deadline. Coincidently they're on a 7 game winning streak. Some of those deadline trades are a disaster like Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz.
I wonder if a trip to the Minors for Puig will wake him up, he's got the physical tools but just is a head case. It might have been the worst thing that could have happened to him to have such early success. Astros ended up sending a pitcher to the BlueJays for a minor league prospect. I was pretty happy with that, although some thought it odd that we'd send a player who can help at the MLB level to Toronto who we are competing with for the wild card. Tigers looked very good to me, swept the Astros and did it convincingly.
Tim Tebow!!! He's inviting MLB clubs to send representatives to see his workout. Hasn't played baseball in 11 years...he'll be a star very soon though!  http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2016/08/09/tim-tebow-major-league-baseball-player/88449696/
:!: A big story out here is Dodgers rookie Rob Segedin. He's a 27-year-old who has had more than 2,000 at-bats in the minor leagues, but he never gave up. His wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant, so his call-up automatically puts his salary near half a million bucks, so this is the feel good story of the year. In his MLB debut against the Red Sox, he doubled with the bases loaded, then singled with the bases loaded again to be named player of the game. This guy plays with his hair on fire and his wife cries through every game... http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/la-sp-dodgers-red-sox-20160807-snap-story.html
That was a feel good story...on that same page was a link to Puig's 1st game in AAA where he tore it up...I wonder if a light bulb has gone off in his head?
 re: Light bulb in Puig's head. The light may be on, but nobody is home. Puig Tweeted and Facebooked drunken pictures of himself and the other minor leaguers celebrating in the Oklahoma City clubhouse after the game. It went viral and was shown on local TV shows and newspapers. The Dodgers were not amused and promised that "The matter will be handled internally." I was worried about Puig being a bad influence on the minor leaguers and now I know I was right. This new ownership team has spent a fortune filling their minors with guys like Segedin, and Chris Taylor, Andrew Toles and Trayce Thompson. Why would you want to send Puig there? It's crazy. The Dodgers are so deep, they're now in first place despite having 26 players on the DL and AAA Oklahoma City is in first place by seven games without Puig. The Dodgers organization doesn't need him for anything.
Last night I slept well for the first time in decades. The Dodgers and the Rams both won at home, in Los Angeles, for the first time since 1979...
BTW- the nearly 90,000 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum was the largest attendance in NFL history for an exhibition game...
A record that might stand, as I believe they are going to reduce the capacity of the stadium aren't they? Watching those guys up north in Santa Clara last night lose to the Texans, that stadium was barely half full.
Jose Altuve got his 1000th hit last night's game, fastest Astro ever at 786 games. Of active players only Suzuki was faster, 689 games. It's a long way to 3000 though, he's in his 5th season and is 26. At his current pace he'll have to play at least till he is 36 to make 3000, no small feat in it self.
Funny thing has happened to my New York Yankees. After easing A-Rod out the door and trading their best hitter and two thirds of a dominant bull pen, they are now playing good baseball. People are more excited out here about them than they have been in 2-3 years.
Anybody see this Friday night? I went out to the other room and told my wife "so much for baseball not being exciting". Bauer gives up a two run homer in the first inning then goes into lockdown mode striking out 13 batters through the 8th. (Reliever comes in and takes care of the Jays in the 9th). But it looks like he's going to lose. Indians pick up a gift run on an error in the sixth so they go into the bottom of the ninth down 2-1. With one out Jose Ramirez hits a solo bomb to tie the game and now the crowd is into it. Then Tyler Naquin comes on and does this on the first pitch; first walk-off-inside-the-park home run by Cleveland since 1916 by none other than Braggo Roth (who??) <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/d21KhbC8DDU" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Walk off inside the park...wow. Also the advertisement I saw with that video had to do with heart attacks...I wonder if any Indians fans suffered one while watching that play! Hope not!
If I'm the Toronto RF, I'm wondering where the heck my CF was. Great hustle play by the Indians hitter.
