A rare complete game by a MLB pitcher, Verlander threw a 2 hitter tonight and lost 2-1. The 2 hits ....solo home runs.
All the great pitchers of Koufax' era were iron men, pitching multiple complete games and putting in around 300 innings. It's just how it was. Who's to say they wouldn't or couldn't do the same today? Who's to say the great pitchers of the current era wouldn't or couldn't have done the same as Koufax? We'll never know. That's why it's difficult to compare different eras and to name "greatest ever" players. For me, you can't compare Koufax and Kershaw because of the night and day difference between the two eras......but you sure as heck can have an opinion. Comparisons of players from different eras is one of the fun things about this game. In my opinion, Koufax was the greater of the two, but Kershaw also will be in the HOF some day.
I think there is also a different philosophy in pitching today. (What do I know but I read it somewhere) ... going all out velocity-wise and snapping off breaking pitches for fewer innings, whereas maybe the pitchers in the old days paced themselves a bit more.
Sports Books say that the Tigers beating Verlander and the Astros last night was the biggest upset in Baseball in 15 years. Astros stunned in historic upset at sportsbooksAstros stunned in historic upset at sportsbooks
Actor Louis Gossett Jr. was quite a basketball player growing up in Brooklyn. He was asked, "Who was the greatest basketball player that you ever saw?" His answer was "Sandy Koufax."
I did not know Koufax was a basketball player, I guess I shouldn't be surprised as back in those days good athletes played all the Sports.
The Yankees have no starting pitching. On a good day their rotation features one #3, two #4s and a bunch of prospects. The Dodgers will see James Paxton ( a colossal disappointment ) and a lot of relief pitchers over the weekend.
The Dodgers have great starters. What they don't have is a consistent bullpen. Both teams have powerful offenses. This should be interesting.
Well sure enough, George laments the Yankees lack of starting pitching and Paxton shows up looking like Cy Young.
That was the Paxton I've been expecting to see. I have no idea why he got off to such a slow start, but like the Dodgers Joe Kelly, everything looks AOK now. So far, I haven't learned anything new in these games. Both teams are tough and nearly ready for the playoffs. The crowds at Chavez Ravine reflect an old and friendly rivalry, with many divided families wearing the jerseys of both teams. Kershaw is on tap for today...
That was a very evenly matched series. The Yankee lineup is deep and about to get deeper when Luke Voit returns. Their two best pitchers have yet to make an appearance this year but both Betances and Severino are rumored to be close. The pitching really stepped up in this series.
Ug......thud.......faceplant... The Yanks looked the way we always look! I think the A's got them riled up. BTW, who is this rookie named Ford? He really hurt us. One thing we learned is we really need Verdugo back from the IL. We're going to need all hands on deck to beat a team that good.
