[quot]eah then you could have 4 pissed off teams, not just one or two. Confused [/quote] I think you mean three kp? One of those four would be voted champion. I can see lots of problems with that scenario, what happens if number 8 upsets number 1 by a good margin, but numbers 2, 3 and 4 win? Seems to me that if you go far enough to seed the to 8 then just go ahead 2 more weeks and finish the 8 team playoff.
Well.....I didn't read it that way. The idea I favor would pi** off only two teams because the vote I am talking about would be the final BCS standings vote for the two teams that would play for the National Title two weeks later. I like that idea because you could get a read on just where teams stood after 5 weeks to get healthy and prepare for the bowl game and possibly the NC game.
I don't think that is what he was proposing MCG, but your plan would have the merit of one more set of games with meaningful results to pick the two best from. Then the list of ticked off teams drops to 2! kp, it's just the Math Professor in me!
Bill, The more I think about it this plan stands a pretty good chance of determining exactly which two teams were most ready to contend for the NC and it would place even more significance on all 4 BCS Bowls. The interest level in the 4 major bowls would go through the roof! On the subjective voting aspect...heck that's what we do now only it's at the end of the regular season weeks before the games are played. I would like some opinions here on my proposed 8 team....plus one playoff. What do you guys think?
I think it has as much merit as any of the other plans that might have a chance MCG. It might have made for some interesting match ups this year for sure.
Let's examine the final eight teams in December: 1.Ohio State 2.LSU 3.Virginia Tech 4.Oklahoma 5.Georgia 6.Missouri 7.USC 8.Kansas I think that Kansas would have been a heckuva test for Ohio State...more so than anyone they played in the regular season. It may have been a lock for the LSU-USC winner to be in the NC game and certainly OSU if they beat Kansas would have been in but if the Buckeyes lost then the second spot most likely would have been the Georgia-Oklahoma winner ( because Missouri lost twice to Okla and I think they beat the Hokies ) .....and we could have had an all-SEC final with LSU vs. Ga.. In this scenario you couldn't limit the # of same conference members to make it legit and you have to throw out bowl tie ins.
Tom, I don't think the Oklahoma - Georgia winner would have been a lock if Ohio State lost. If Va Tech wins then they have the advantage of being the highest ranked team that was left standing. Also I think that Ohio State would have beaten Kansas putting them in the game.
There certainly would be some good games in your seeding scenario, but it's impossible to predict the outcomes. Yes, an all-SEC final would be a possibility on equal footing with several other possibilities. One thing is certain in a bowl playoff plan.....Neither team would have a home field advantage similar to the way the NFL works. Of course it could happen in a sense depending on which bowls the southern and western teams play in, but 4 of the 8 teams definitely would be playing far from home.
It's going to be difficult to get the PAC10/Big10 to do anything that reduces the Rose Bowl. If you remember that they refused to join the Bowl Coalition because of the Rose Bowl and only reluctantly joined the BCS when it was formed because they would have been effectively left out of the Nat'l Championship Picture if they didn't join. That sense of resposiblity to the Rose Bowl still exists. Big 10 and a Playoff
I think Bill was referring to me Tom. RE: OSU vs. Ks... I am not saying that there is any certainty OSU loses that game but I am saying with certainty IMHO that Kansas would have been their toughest opponent of the year leading up to that game and would have had a decent shot to beat them. OSU was a questionable # 1 this year mostly because several other teams appeared to be pretty equal at least to the Buckeyes and their schedule did not set them apart from other contenders. However....someone had to be #1 so they were it. The end result is the clamor for at least a plus one game and the strong statements by Adams regarding the need for a playoff. Va Tech lost to Kansas so in my scenario the Hokies don't make the final BCS consideration because I think Mizzou beats them as well. If it would pass the 4 team playoff would be better but if not that then at least a plus one game with a post-bowl BCS vote to determine the participants is better than what we have now.
I wouldn't overestimate the "strength" of his comments. When he first made them I thought it was a good move. Upon further consideration, because of the timing, it looks pretty certain he was advancing an agenda. Plus, he apparently has a reputation for attracting attention like this. Time will tell whether or not other college presidents feel as he does. Terry, your quotes are from the XM interview I heard a few hours before the championship game. I think I said somewhere else that there was an arrogant tone in his voice as he made his comments.
Sid, I wonder where Adams was last year when Bernie Machen of Florida was pushing for a playoff and went to the SEC where he didn't get any support. I wish I could find out Adams position at that time.
Good point, Bill. That seems to support the idea that he had an agenda based on current events. Gee, I wonder what that agenda could have been.
I'm not gonna disagree with that, but in all fairness...OSU ended up there because of an incredible sequence of everybody else "stepping on their crank" (your favorite quote)...it is what it is. A playoff would be great, but it's not gonna happen for a lot of reasons... I think the bowls plus one situation is the most feasible one.
I agree on the plus one as most feasible Stu. That quote actually was a favorite of BT. Not really a favorite of mine but he chose to use it about Florida and now it seems as if more than a few other teams we know fit that description as well.....
In this recent past college football season, the one thing that perhaps characterized it more than previous years is that everybody stepped on their crank, though to be sure as is always the case, some more than others....the eventual champ was the one that stepped on it in the manner that was least harmful.
