something for both you Ohio State and Michigan folks.. or really anyone. Spencer Hall is a very good writer. He's a Gator. His writing style takes a few knocks because, like a lot of guys in between the 30s and 40s, he takes liberties with the language, fuses modern slang and is also heavily influenced by growing up playing video games.. He's absolutely superb in my opinion, and I don't say that often.. Some of you may know him from EveryDayShouldBeSaturday or SBNation or the hilarious Youtube show "Shut Down Fullback," but this weekend he attended the Ohio State-Michigan game for the first time. This is his report and I think it's incredibly well done. I thought some of you might like a peek into the mind of a true football nut, from the South who now resides in Atlanta and his opinions of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday...part-one-the-thing-we-did-before-the-fsu-game
Corey, thanks for sharing the article. Spencer has a way with words, I enjoyed the article. Always interesting to me how others perceive us and our institution. I wonder if he played in a college band? (grin)
That was pretty entertaining to read. Those guys at EDSBS are very entertaining in general. They used to love to get on Charlie Weis for sure.
T, As someone quite familiar with him, I'd say he enjoyed it very much. He has a particular disdain for the Walmartization of America and the strip mall eco-boom that plagues the Southeastern United States and much of the rest of America. Don, His piece 'God's Away On Business' to kick off the 2011 piece was just wonderful. It intertwined Tom Waits' song "God's Away On Business", to the collapse of the Libyan government (which had just happened), to the suburbanization of the southeast to college football, to the collapse of his own family, to inner reflection, to the hypocrisy that is college football... and ties them all together well. You can read it at the link below. If you're unfamiliar with the song, you can even hear it on the page. Of course, they used a Youtube mashup of the Cookie Monster singing the song because, well, not everything can be serious.. right? http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2011/9/1/2377214/gods-away-on-business Terry, LOL Oh I'm quite aware. They are still on him. I know that at least Spencer was hoping for a Florida-Notre Dame BCS CG just so they could see Charlie Weis run a recruiting campaign next year that he was the 'architect of success for last year's BCS championship.' Absurd, yes. True? Probably.
