Who is it that hired and manages the staff? I think you been listening to those poor souls on NDNation too much..... Joe is without question past his prime, but let's not forget he is without question one of the finest college coaches the game has ever seen and as Bobda suggests is still sharp as a tack and quite capable of imparting a helpful nugget or two to his staff....
I don't think so ...... the downhill side of his coaching trajectory is still well above what the vast majority can or ever will aspire to......I simply don't believe you can make a viable argument that recognizes PSU fine season and simultaneously suggesting the head coach can no longer be productive.... I don't know what your sources are telling you, but mine are telling me that Joe still does somewhat more that sit in the corner and nap before, during and after the game and the weeks prep.....
PSU staff meeting JoePa: OK what's the game plan for this week. Tom you go first. Tom Bradley: Yada, Yada, Yada, how's that sound Joe? JoePa: Sounds great Tom, Now lets hear the offensive game plan quickly, my bran muffin is kicking in... JayPa: OK pops, Yada, Yada.... JoePa: Sounds great son, anything else? Meeting adjourned.
I don't follow PSU enough to know if JoePa really still has it or not. But I saw some a press conference of his earlier in the season and was laughing out loud at how he toyed with the reporters - acting clueless then cutting them with some zingers. He sure appeared 'all there'. On the other hand, you have this gem from the Bobby Bowden show, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIn1...5&tid=117987320&mid=117987320&sid=882&style=2. That was before FSU proceded to lose to Boston College. We saw it on his show, and after replaying it a couple of times for fun, could not believe that this was a segment that was actually chosen to air for all to see! So even if the PSU P.R. team is protecting Joe Pa, the FSU folks seem to be aiding in exposing Saint Bobby.
Now that was funny. If Bobbah hadn't had that cheat sheet do you think he would have remembered it was BC they were playing? FWIW: Bowden and JoePa were once the top of their profession. They aren't any more and the wins and losses are dependent on the staffs that they have in place. Not that other coaches aren't dependent on having great staffs, but you surely couldn't compare Urban Meyers involvement in the Gators success, or Jim Tressels involvement in the Buckeyes success to what JoePa is most likely contributing to the PSU success this year or any year for the last 10 years.
I don't agree. Oregon State won without it's two best players. Ole Miss has been lead by their best players all year. Oregon State lost 3 of its first 4 games this year and then seemed to turn it around. Ole Miss was still losing games as of the 7th game this season. Let's not overlook the fact that Ole Miss 'got good' during a stretch run of -Arkansas -Auburn -Louisiana Monroe -LSU One could make the case that those are 3 bad and one average football teams.
The argument that the Paterno of 2008 is not the same coach as he was in 1987 or 1973 may be true but that argument is different than the original NDNation creation categorizing him as one step away from the Alzheimer's ward. After Penn State hit the skids in the 2000, he replaced long time members of his coaching staff and replaced them with some very shrewd hirings such as Galen Hall, Vanderlinden, the former coach at Maryland and Barnett's DC at NW back in the mid nineties, and the present DC who replaced Sandusky and who will probably succeed Paterno. In fact, I think he nearly hired Slick Rick as his new offensive coordinator with SR deciding instead to stay in the pros at that time. I think there are more than a few people on the board who think Reagan was one of the better presidents in our lifetime and I do not think Reagan was known for being involved in the minutia of governing as compared to someone like Carter or Clinton. If Paterno's present management style is now somewhat Reaganesque, the fact remain is that he was the guy who put the pieces together and deserves kudos for the ultimate success his team had this year. Give the old boy some friggen credit, Terry.
Well said. Anyone with a lick of common sense recognizes that. By the way, Joel, he's had his hip replacement surgery already and is doing fine. You were correct, sir.
Didn't Sandusky retire giving up on waiting to be the guy to take over for Joe? I think the same fate awaits Tom Bradley, as long as JoePa is coherent and able to conduct a simple news conference he can continue. BTW I saw that news conference, while he didn't come across as senile that's for sure, he didn't come across as sharp as say Jim Tressel or Bob Stoops or Mack Brown. He just mumbled a lot and basically said nothing to answer the questions specifically.
