Scott, Congrats on that win over Big Ten Champ Minnesota! Ralph, I see where you salvaged a win last night also.
Don I was sorry to see that your team didn't show up for the regionals, I know you were excited to see them play. Congrats Scott, you guys look like you are playing exceptional and ready to move on towards the Supers... As far as Miami we are winning but it's more like the cardiac kids at the moment, these late game heroics are bad for my heart... We went ahead 8-1 and then lost all concentration having to win it in the 9th with a score of 9-8. My hats off to Long Beach which is a team I have admired for years, they played incredible baseball during the regionals, especially when you consider traveling cross country and playing in the soupy humidity called South Florida... Onto the Super Regional, Miami plays Boston College who surprisingly we have not played since 2014 even though we are in the same conference.
Well with the ACC having 2 Divisions for Baseball and BC and Miami in opposite divisions I'm not really surprised, although with as many games as baseball plays you would think even with a 14 team league each team would play the other 13 teams. It would limit the non-conference games which sort of act as an exhibition season for college baseball but it would seem to be worth it. Teams play about 60 games so 39 conference games wouldn't hurt the schedule that much if at all. BTW 4 ACC teams make the Super Regionals..Miami, Louisville, BC and FSU. Biggest Surprise...William and Mary a .500 team beat last years Champion UVA to win their Regional.
That's the beauty of the game. Even a dominant team can be beaten by a "lesser" team on any given day, something that normally doesn't happen in basketball or football.
Terry, It's not so much a question of the number of games but the number of weekends. To play a 13 series conf sched you would have to start those games March 5 this year. That would only leave you one or two weekends in Feb to get all of your non con games in. You would miss all the March tourneys that help with RPI...
Some pretty nice highlights of the regionals... http://www.ncaa.com/news/baseball/article/2016-06-07/college-world-series-12-unreal-defensive-plays-regional-round
What a crazy first few days of the Supers. We have our first qualifier - Arizona takes out MSU in a 2 game sweep to advance. Many of the home teams have lost the first game (My Aggies included). Looks like LSU will fall into that bucket as well. Not too surprised... they hit a hot streak, but their pitching was dicey all year. If it's falling back now... things ain't gonna go so well for the kitties. (breaks my heart!) I think Ralph's Canes were the only home team to start off with a win, but their series was evened today. We'll know a good bit about the field for Omaha tomorrow night.
Scott, Glad to see your win last night over TCU. Good luck today. Very surprised that Boston College won over Miami. Should be some great games this afternoon and evening. Louisville did not fare much better. No love lost there for me.
I watched a heckuva game between AZ and Miss. State at Miss. State's field. AZ came from behind to tie the game in the 9th and won in extra innings to be the first team to punch its ticket to Omaha. Terry, the head coach of AZ is in his first year and formerly was an assistant coach at Texas. Timing is everything, right? If the TX coach had stepped down a year earlier, who knows what might have happened? The AZ coach likely is glad he took the job at AZ and isn't looking back.
OMAHA! @CanesBaseball beats Boston College, 9-4, advances to College World Series for 25th time in search of 5th national championship!
Louisville up 3-0, bottom of 9th, UCSB at bat, arguably the nation's best closer on the mound for L'ville, single and two walks to load the bases. UCSB pinch hitter a freshman with 26 AB the entire season. Result? Walk-off GS to oust the #2 seed and send UCSB to the CWS. As Yogi said, it ain't over til it's over. I've become a Louisville baseball fan and hate to see them lose, but congratulations to the Gauchos for a gutty win. Congratulations, Ralph. I love seeing BC lose at anything. I'll be rooting for our ACC brother team next week.
Pretty impressive that TCU can go to College Station and beat A&M on it's home field. 3 Big 12 teams to the CWS (TCU,Tech,OSU) pretty impressive.
The Ags choked it away in the 7th yielding 3 runs that should never have happened. Uncharacteristic walks, errors, past balls, and wild pitches all came together to spell doom. I guess the kids were pressing too hard. A little surprising after the way they played most of the season. Oh well, not how they wanted to end it but still a good year.
How Texas A&M lost (last inning drama) is very similar to how another high seed, Louisville lost. IMO it's the nature of the sport. There are so many variables in baseball that affect matchups, it's what makes the sport so unpredictable, unlike football and basketball, where the dominant team most often prevails. It's one reason I love the sport, except when my team is on the losing end.
Gators vs FSU for that last slot. Sid that walk off Grand Slam vs Louisville...WOW, that kid will never forget that one, what a moment.
