First time I ever saw Skynyrd they were playing in a high school gym in a Jacksonville suburb and tickets were only $2.00 This was just before they released their first album and became mega stars so it was pretty cool....as I didn't even know who they were but that night they finished a great concert with Free Bird.... and it was the first time I had ever heard the song..... and it blew me away of course.
I have sang Foxey Lady and Purple Haze by Jimi but the one I have done the most by him is Fire. I love doing that song..... "Ahhhh move over Rover..... and let Jimi take over...... yeah.... you know what I'm talkin about.... YEAH!" Love that verse....
Hendrix. Joplin. Morrison. Who knows? All very unique. Meteoric rise to stardom. Snuffed out at 27 by their own vices. My personal favorite was Stevie Ray who dies tragically in a helicopter crash. Here is a little early Jimi backing Little Richard, who just passed away.
The Lizard King himself, former UCLA film student Jim Morrison and The Doors on the Ed Sullivan Show.
The California Jam was held at the old Ontario Motor Speedway near my house in April 1974. I didn't go to hear the music, but I did attend the parking lot parties the night before... This is Black Sabbath doing War Pigs when their lead singer, Ozzie Osbourne, still had most of his brains left...
Here's Ozzie at the Oz Fest in the U.K. in 2005. The Oz Fest later found a permanent home here In San Bernardino County in the Cajon Pass where he can't do much damage. How the hell has this guy lived so long?
My son gave him and his wife a ride in the back of a police car at Met Life Stadium several years ago. He said she was very nice and that he was basically a vegetable. At least at that moment.
