The Bass player was Michael "Mad" Anthony....local band yes....rich?...not sure the VH brothers were?
My wife said that she's been to their parent's house in La Canada... that's the wealthy area above the Rose Bowl.
Here's a local guy from Garden Grove HS. The first time I saw him, he was working at Disneyland doing magic tricks and making funny jokes. I was astounded at his talent. He kept me laughing for so long that I didn't want to leave. I wondered how someone so talented could be so unknown. I shouldn't have worried, he's worth hundreds of millions today...
Jim, I have a friend (woman) whom I've known for years who was a high school classmate of mine and went to Purdue. The summer between her junior and senior years at Purdue, she went to California and lived with her aunt. She met a very nice young man whose parents owned the apartment building next to her aunt's home. They hung out together that summer. Steve Martin. She said her aunt allowed him to keep his surf board inside her garage. Side story: They went to a party. At one point, he came to her and told her they had to leave. The reason is that he learned there were drugs at the party. For that reason, he didn't want to be there and he didn't want her exposed to it. She told me that during that summer he was doing what you described at nearby clubs: doing magic tricks and making jokes. She didn't mention Disneyland. This would have been the summer of 1965, probably before you saw him. EDIT: After I wrote the above, I googled him. He would have been 20 yrs. old, almost 21, in the summer of 1965. This excerpt from Wikipedia describes the couple of years post-high school: "After high school, Martin attended Santa Ana College, taking classes in drama and English poetry. In his free time, he teamed up with friend and Garden Grove High School classmate Kathy Westmoreland to participate in comedies and other productions at the Bird Cage Theatre. He joined a comedy troupe at Knott's Berry Farm."
Jim, I loved your last two musical posts. Dion & the Belmonts and Fats Domino were by far two of my favorite entertainers during my teen years. Fats was one-of-a-kind great, and Dion et al had great voices for both slow and fast dancing. Thanks!
This is the original British band Manfred Mann. The lead singer is Paul Jones, who is one of the most remarkable men of all-time. His son became CEO of a major corporation and today his estimated net worth is in the neighborhood of $5.3 BILLION dollars!
