Guys, this is nothing new. I remember when Christopher David Simms (a.k.a. Chrissy) called a press conference to say he was all Vol and less than two weeks later he backed out and went to Texas. When I was upset with this, a lot of people here lectured me about 18 year old kids that don't know what they want should be able to change their minds. It sucks when it happens to your university but it happens to all of us.
It seems to happen to us every year. As you can see, we can't agree on this thing with the DL but the loss of our QB has us all puckering.
We were courting Chrissy and a few others. When he committed, the others committed elsewhere leaving us without a QB that year. That was BIG!
The whole ditching a school late in the recruiting process after being committed is bad because it screws the school royally. They have stopped recruiting other options and now late in the game can't easily get back into the race. But what was once uncommon is now common place and where schools would leave a kid alone once he made a verbal, Urban Meyer popularized the theory that it just narrowed the competition. It's legal and it's now common place. I read all the time about players who people speculate can be flipped and that are still being recruited even though they have said they are 100% SchoolX. I also don't believe recruiting should be some license to party and travel on somebody elses dime. But that's what it is and so many of the kids who verbal early decide that they want to look around because they want to experience the party and all that goes with an offical visit. Sorry I wish that the NCAA had a rule that prevented kids who have given their verbal from visiting other schools. I'll bet coaches would like that as well. The Chris Simms thing was a big deal because it was pretty much unheard of for somebody who was the #1 overall recruit and at a high profile position dump a school like Tenn at the last minute. But it's not that way anymore. You can't count your class till they send in the LOI, and now we are starting to see that even then you can't be sure. I hope that the kid from UGA and the ND kid are outliers in this process and not the start of a new trend.
Zaire attended Alter HS in Dayton, Ohio . They have always been my HS's arch-rival and still are. It is a Catholic, college prep school with very high standards. I'm quite certain that he can garsp the playbook and that he is ahead of Golson in the classroom. I hope Golson makes the complete turnaround, no matter where he plays.
Brian Kelly's public comments on Golson: http://espn.go.com/college-football...-irish-coach-says-disappointed-everett-golson
George is a classmate of mine. We were friends through our work on the campus radio station. He took it seriously.
The VIP tix disappeared too quickly for me. Probably won't get a photo op. I was going to ask about our Red Zone offense or his contract but after last weekend....
Rumors floating around about Eddie Vanderdoes. They are that he asked all the schools who were recruiting him to also offer his sister who is a 9th grade basketball player a scholarship. Kelly supposedly said he would talk to Muffet about it. The family assumed that was a yes and in the end Muffet had no interest in his sister and the family feels that a promise was broken. I know package deals are not uncommon, as a Texas fan I seem to remember losing a player to UF when they offered his sister a tennis scholarship. I'm sure Texas has done that as well at some point. I can't think of the player but ND got a kid from WVA back in the Holtz days when they offered his lightly recruited classmate. Funny thing is if I remember correctly the classmate ended up being the better player and a starter. But in this case if EV's sister wasn't one of the top recruits in her class and if Muffet didn't go wow I'd love to have her then no way should Muffet be strong armed into taking a player she doesn't want just to help the football program. She's earned that right.
Very enjoyable talk by Kelly without any real interesting specifics about EG or Vanderdoesn't. Said he was proud of the way Golson owned up to screwing up. Apparently is in a wait and see mode about EV. He was proud that all 14 seniors who participated in ND's pro day were signed and in camp with some team. More importantly all 14 have gotten their degrees. He said that they're coming to realize that the NFL is an experience not a career. Nothing specific on QB situation.
