Speaking of direspect.... this time for one's own school.... did this fellow ever attend class? http://www.dailydot.com/society/dj-fluker-confesses-took-money-in-college/
That's an old story, about Fluker, he just signed with the Chargers. He and his agent claimed that his twitter account was hacked. It really made no sense at the time, it was before the draft when the NFL teams are doing character assessment (yeah I know, ha,ha,). Not to mention it reflected poorly on the program that helped put him where he was and might have caused some NCAA problems. I tend to believe his account was hacked. It made no sense for him to make a tweet like that at the time. If he really did take money..save the story for his autobiography later.
As far as Tommy Rees goes, I think Kelly needed to name him the starter. He's a leader on the team, he's well liked from all accounts. The "voluntary" summer drills have to be pushed by the team leadership. It's easier for Tommy to be a part of that leadership if he's the starter. I've never read anything about I don't believe it means there will be no competition for the QB slot this summer or during the fall camp though.
Kelly could have named his starter in Detroit. But Noooooo...he had to wait until he was in Grand Rapids this week.
that story was much bigger than the daily dot. It was widely reported but before Bama fans could pucker adequately, Fluker and his agent came out claiming the account was hacked. It was pretty fishy, but whatever.. it's the south, we see much stranger stuff here.
Corey, You know it's interesting how when another school is involved it is very easy to believe an unsubstantiated story. Now when one's own school is involved, the burden of proof is much higher. :?
KP, I hear ya and even agree to an extent. What hurts the Tide is that there is an established precedent of paying players by bat **** crazy fans who like to be a part of 'the process.' It also doesn't help that, despite the level headed responses of our esteemed SEC fans here, a trip through any SEC tailgate will expose a 'if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin' mindset. Hell, I'd say most.. maybe a bit more than half, of my Tide buddies actually think that way. Then there's Auburn.. which is a perpetual ATM for athletes (good and bad). Then again, if you told me our best player last year would have had an imaginary girlfriend and would be dragged through the mud for months, I would have told you that you were crazy.. What do I know? Social media presents a series of challenges in that kids can just shoot off at the mouth without the athletic dept PR machine to act as a filter. I know it's easy to say 'my account was hacked' but if you stop and think about the actual act of that.. it's a crime and a quite serious one. In order to hack a twitter account, one usually has to go through the email system and for a lot of these players, that's a university email which is an even bigger crime. Why not press charges? You can find out, you always can. Then again, maybe it really was just some crazy fan playing a joke (one that is NEVER funny in Alabama) and the kid just wants to be done with it? Either way, we won't know so it's just easier to raise an eyebrow and move on.
Rees <t>On Rees, it's probably the smart thing for Kelly to do at this point. He and the team in particular can go throught the summer without having the question all summer long lingering around. Kelly can always change his mind based on how the QBs perform in fall practice prior to the season open. <br/> <br/> I have a lot of respect and gratitude for what Rees has done for ND the past couple of seasons. I'm still just not sure he's a true DIV 1 starting QB. I'd love to be proven wrong. It puts a lot of pressure on the O-Line to keep him upright and our defense to keep us in the game.</t>
Corey, I hear ya. I'll just say it again "You know it's interesting how when another school is involved it is very easy to believe an unsubstantiated story. Now when one's own school is involved, the burden of proof is much higher." I try (most of the time) to reserve judgement until the whole story comes out. Doesn't always work but I try.
Joe Schmidt an overachiever from Southern California got his scholarship when Eddie Vanderdoes bailed on us. Good for him, he wanted to play for ND and even paid his way to do so.
Good for Schmidt! Atta boy!! Tim, Here's my problem with Rees. To defend the Irish with him at QB, all a defense has to do is pop a 2-deep umbrella and drop everyone into coverage. In the past, the Irish have shown no ability to sustain a running game or alternative means to move the ball if the defense plays run first, while dropping into a 2 deep coverage. It takes away the only 2 things we can do with Rees. They essentially dare him to run the ball and he simply cannot. Either our OL is going to have to get better than they've shown and simply out execute the defense to play a 3/4/5 yards and a cloud of dust style running game.. or we're screwed, because Tommy isn't getting faster and his arm isn't any stronger. KP, Yeah, I hear ya! I just assume Auburn is guilty though.
 Schmidt was captain of the team at national powerhouse Mater Dei HS. He had lots of scholarship offers, but turned them all down to follow his dream at Notre Dame. Schmidt for Vanderdoes is a good trade. One kid didn't care where he played and the other dreamed of becoming a Notre Dame man. I'll take that trade every day...
