It works well for all of the other divisions of college football? While college football's popularity doesn't depend on the playoff, can you imagine having several prime matchups every Saturday throughout December and a real college Super Bowl in early January? Man that would be a fun tournament.
The Div 1 Football Championship Subdivision playoffs began last weekend and rolls through the middle of Dec. If the Div 1 Bowl Subdivision implemented playoffs, would that require: #1 - changes to end the regular season earlier? #2 - elimination of conference title games? #3 - elimination of bowl games for any of the playoff teams?
OSU caught Florida with a healthy Percy Harvin amongst others on offense in Glendale. This year Tenn and FSU ran afoul of a similar fate. When the hosses are healthy for Florida that offense purrs and heck even with a few injuries it ain't half bad.
#1 A 16 team tournament would take 4 weeks. The SECCG is this weekend. If the playoff started the next weekend you could conceivably have the "Super Bowl" on 29 Dec. #3 8 of the 16 teams in the tournament would have 1 bowl game, 4 of the 16 would have 2 bowl games, 2 of the 16 would have 3 bowl games and 2 of the 16 would have 4 bowl games. With the draw that these matchups would bring the pay-off for these 16 teams could far exceed the proceeds from a single bowl game. Those teams outside of the 16 in the tournament could go on with the bowls just like now. There are details to to be sure but I for one would really be excited about watching great football with interregional matchups every weekend in December and not have to listen to one team or the other complain about not getting their shot at the MNC.
Hey, I'm in favor of a playoff system but just wonder what changes would be made to the schedules to accomplish its implementation. I would think the issue of conference champioships would need to be addressed - they would be eliminated or required of all conferences. Now, what would be done with ND and the other Indys? Also, I wonder how much the playoffs would impact recruiting, epsecially those teams who would play through the 3rd round or final? While they'd receive great national exposure, they'd be at a disadvantage vis-a-vis teams not playing when it came to in homes, campus visits, etc during December.
I don't think a playoff requires that conferences have a championship game. Just that they have a way of determining who is their guaranteed representative . There will be at large spots that ND competes for and their will be criteria set for qualifing for those at large spots.
My issue with the +1 conference championship game is it is a disadvantage to teams required to play ..... as it increases the possibility for injury to key players without really providing any benefit with respect to gaining a spot in a 16-team tournament. While it is possible a team could play it's way into the tourny, it could also play its way out, too. IMO, if the Div 1 Bowl Division goes to a tournament/playoff to decide the MNC, then I think all teams vying for one of the 16 slots should play the same number of games (say 12) over the same time period (say 13 weeks). As it is now, OSU ended its 12-game season on 11/17 while UT and LSU are still playing a 13-game schedule on 12/1/07. And, it seems much of the Pac-10 is still playing .... without the +1 conference championship game.
TOK, a wonderful hypothesis.....but like many well intended theories, it has been tested in the crucible of on field action and found wanting......we have, in fact, struggled mightily with offenses of this ilk. Illinois' Juice is no Pat White and the Illini RB is no Steve Slaton. Perhaps its a scheme issue and we have yet to implement a design that is effective in defending.....I don't know what it is, but it is indeed.
GaterzFan, I agree that it is a disadvantage but that is a conference decision. We have done it to ourselves and I guess we could undo if we wanted to.
TOK, I don't know what the deal is but Coach Tressel and his staff with all their skills, and they are many, have been absolutely bamboozled by that damn offense.....I think they philosophically have concluded that the best approach is very much assignment oriented, read and react type of defensive schemes which is wholly out of character for his usual Buckeye "Silver Bullet" defense. It runs totally counter to their base persona and as such makes them appear slow and plodding.....certainly not the type of defense we've grown accustomed to seeing, attacking with pressure from all levels, swarming to the ball and in stark contrast to the defense we saw running rings around a superb Miami offense with great, great speed. I kid you not....the thought of watching the silver bullets play read and react back on their heels while White and Slaton run rings around them is a recurring nightmare. Bring LSU, bring SC and I would expect to win....WVa and I ain't so sure, but would love to see him get another opportunity to get it right!
BT, Hate to change subjects but I think the SEC dogs are a lot tougher than the dogs that greeted the Wolverines in Columbus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WezgAIBY6Ys&feature=related
Well did I call this one or what? Baring a big comeback by Missouri the Scenario I stated had come true. So who will play Ohio State? Georgia? LSU? Va Tech? S. Cal? Gators?
uhm <t>the only way that Georgia doesn't play ahead of LSU is if the human pollsters do a MASSIVE about face in 1 week. Georgia would have to drop 4 or 5 spots in the human polls for this to happen.<br/> <br/> At this moment, "Scoop" Herbstreit is openly campaigning for LSU to play in the title game based on 'what they did.'<br/> <br/> <br/> jeeeeez, why do we even play these games?</t>
I cannot see a single reason why Ga should play in the NC over LSU....and they won't. Ga did not even win it's division let alone the SEC Championship. Ga was beaten soundly by the team that lost to LSU tonight. Done deal.
well MCG <t>welcome to the world that Pac10 fans have been griping about for years.<br/> <br/> This system blows.<br/> <br/> Think about it. What makes next weeks rankings more valid than this weeks? Georgia didn't play but you're asking them to drop about 5 spots in all the major polls???<br/> <br/> VTech actually stands a shot at going ahead of LSU..</t>
Va Tech has two losses and was beaten huge by LSU....that saves LSU on that one. Ga will be ranked #4....right where it's at.
seriously <t>it will take a historic, never-before-seen poll leap.<br/> <br/> if they put LSU in the game, its a sham</t>
