    He would be a popular choice. He would provide a much-needed link with the Knight era but without the Knight baggage.
    Just a bit. :wink:

    IU hired Sharon Versyp, a Purdue grad, to coach their women's b-ball team.

    Of course;

    1. They don't care about women's b-ball at IU. (just kidding)
    2. She bolted for Purdue when Kristy Curry left for Tex. Tech.

    OTOH, I don't think Matt Painter is going to leave any time soon.

    Will never happen. Way too much baggage, not to mention the law suit he filed against IU which eventually was tossed sometime within the past several months.

    I'd hire him too. I have always loved IU basketball, second only to my home town Dayton Flyers. But I've come to realize my real attraction was Bobby Knight.

    He got so much out of his teams. He was an old school coach by today's standards, using tactics and theatrics that cause today's PC fans to recoil. But he took care of the really important things.. he graduated his players and he taught the game of basketball.

    I liked Woody and Bo for the same reasons.

    Actually, I agree with both of you. I would hire him, and I would let my son play for him. But today's Bobby Knight seems to be worn out in terms of coaching. I heard a radio interview with Pat Knight, who came across very well as a humble, appreciative young man. He said that his dad always had taken losses harder than he had enjoyed wins, but he had gotten to the point where he was not enjoying the wins at all. He would be miserable because of all the problems he saw despite the team's victory. I think Pat was saying that his dad saw that as a sign that it was time to go. I wonder, at 67 with his emotional makeup, can you recuperate yourself enough to come back to coaching? Do you want to try to come back?

    I wouldn't hire him, not just for the reasons Sid mentioned in terms of the whole IU relationship and how it ended. But also he's really just been an average coach at Texas Tech, he's not recruited very well and his teams are good but not great. At IU with their history and tradition they need to find a young, energetic guy who can return them to the top of the B10 and in a league with Duke/UNC/Kansas/etc nationally. He needs to be a guy who can recruit and bring in top level talent and then coach that talent. That is not Bobby Knight.

    Good comments, Terry. Worth noting.

    I should have said I would hire him but definitely not at IU. Terry makes a good point about his "average" recruiting and record at TT.

    I agree that they need a a solid young coach with a proven track record of winning the right way.

    I remember watching him play in the HS state final game, which his team won (before class play), and at Michigan State. I believe he had a modestly successful pro career, and I'm pretty sure his entire coaching experience has been at the pro level. I would wonder about his lack of a track record in recruiting and coaching kids at the college level. It would seem like a bit of a gamble for a program at the level of IU.
