Re: the decline of batting average

Who was the hottest hitter in MLB in the just concluded month of June?

It was Chone Figgins of the Angels. He set a team record for most hits in the month of June with 51. This puts him into elite company with names like Ichiro Suzuki and Albert Pujols who also had 50 in recent years. The all-time record was George Sisler in 1920 with 61...

Now did anyone care? No? Was this the first you've heard of it? The last I heard, the Angels were still trying to trade for a power hitting 3rd baseman. Chone Figgins plays 3rd base...

If the Sox have another month like June it won't matter.

Have you seen replays of Pence's catch at the flagpole? His expression right after he cacthes the ball is rich.

Hunter is just fun to watch. He's a great kid, I hope he doesn't change.

    re: 1978

    Wasn't that Bucky Effen Dent?

BTW- Irish Dave Francis and Al Leyva are in Boston right now. Some of you have met Dave here or in South Bend. He coaches baseball at Claremont High School, while Al coaches over at the University of LaVerne, he's the brother of former Phillies manager Nick Leyva. Right now they're coaching the North Adams SteepleCats in the Cape Cod League. Here's a story about that:
    http://www.iberkshires.com/story/23144/SteepleCats-announce-the-hiring-of-pitching-coach-Jeff-Verplancke-and-assistant-coach-Brian-Hamm.html

Please note; the pitching coach that Al hired is Jeff Verplancke, who is one of Corey's former players. I believe that Jeff pitched in the Giants organization and he's now the head coach at Colony High School...

Anyway... Dave emailed me the last several days to tell me what a great time that they're having in Boston. All three of them, Al, Dave and Jeff are Californians who didn't know anything about New England culture, so everything is new to them.

A few days ago, their pitchers tossed a no-hitter, so the owner gave them all a reward. Yesterday, he loaded up the entire team on a bus and took them to Fenway Park for a Red Sox game. They had a blast! They'd never been to a stadium that was downtown before and they said it was like a cattle drive watching all the fans going into the ballpark. After that, the owner took them all to a restaurant where they saw incredible wonders such as a lobster as big as the dinner plate and huge shrimp as a side order. Dave showed off by ordering clam chowder...something he learned hanging around with me...

They're all having a lot of fun back there, and they're falling in love with New England and its people...
