    Dave,

We all agree this murder as well as any murder is a stain on our society. The suspect is a retired police captain, was director of security for Busch Gardens, president of his neighborhood watch program and probably had more training than most of us in firearms (well except maybe Tom). To achieve this position he had to pass review boards and psych test. One would think with all of this experience and credentials he would be the last person on earth to kill a man while he texted his 3 year old daughter during movie previews. But the sad fact is he did pull the trigger.

This is only an issue of stand your ground to those who wish to make it. Everyone else with no agenda in that battle realizes something snapped inside this man that allowed him to lose rational thought. I would think an attorney has a better chance of the insanity clause than any other excuse that ripped a family apart or in this event, death.

I do agree with you in the fact that we just don't know who we are standing next to these days and if he or she will decide to stab you, run you over, beat you with a bat, shoot you. Any of these causes bodily harm with scars inside as well as outside.

I would think that is the only defense.

To muddy things up with stand your ground defense angles could jump start major changes or repeals of the law.

    Overheard something scary at lunch....

A guy at the bar was discussing this case with the waitress and I heard him saying about the shooter "well.... what did you expect him to do.... he told the guy to stop texting several times... "

As I suspected there's a twisted faction of people out there who somehow identify with the shooter more than the father of the little girl.

How can that be? WTF has happened to our society?

Hey Dave the law allows defendents to chose their defense, whether it be something like "Stand Your Ground" or insanity or the more commonly used one that they were abused as children or had some horrible upbringing that the defense believes should mitigate some or any crime.

As I say Terry what is concerning is that aggressive people are carrying around guns in their pocket and using ''stand your ground" as the reason they couldn't keep it in their pocket to keep from murdering someone.

Yes Dave millions of crazed killers are walking around with itchy trigger fingers just waiting for you to cross them so they can kill you, and DROVES of them are skating away free thanks to the stand your ground law.

Geez... you've already determined an outcome (that is highly likely to be wrong), only to put down a law you don't understand.

So Dave what about those crazed killers walking around shooting people who don't claim to be standing their ground...maybe got dissed by the bouncer at a mens club and went to the car and got the gun...that happens a lot. Or what about those people who can't pay their drug dealer so they just shoot him.

    Dave

I have no desire to harm my fellow man but I have had a firearm within arms reach since I have been 16 and driving myself. I am now a few months away from 50 and have not raised a gun in anger at a fellow human being. I have no desire to ever do so. This being said I cannot begin to understand why someone brings a gun to the movies much less pulls it out in anger. It's not the ability to use gun that is the problem but the person behind the act.

    When will people realize this.??????????

It's not comprehensible to me either.

But the fact remains that sometimes bad things happen when people have guns at arms reach.

And Terry.... this was a father with his wife in a typical suburban movie theater..... not a bouncer at the club.... not a drug dealer.....

Obviously there was an extreme disconnect with this individual.

If he uses "stand your ground" as a defense and a stranger at the bar today within my earshot is actually defending him because of it then that's pretty effed up.

A guy walked into a crowded bar, waving his 1911 Colt .45 caliber pistol with an 8 round magazine, and yelled, "Who in here has been screwing my wife?"

A few moments of silence was interrupted by a voice from the back of the bar who yelled back, "You're gonna need more ammo."
