Quite a finish in Scotland. Adam Scott had a birdie putt of 10 ft and couldn't convert. MacIntyre had a 20 foot for Birdie on 18 and he converted and got the win. It was sort of fitting as he'd been beaten with that great 2 iron from Rory after hitting a great 3 wood to like 5 feet and making the birdie, but Rory trumped him. Speaking of Rory, he played well but his putter failed him, I can't tell you how many putts he missed by and inch or so right or left. All inside 10 feet.
I see that Nellie Korda finally made a cut, but finished outside the top 25 Puzzling drop off after such a dominant start.
Stu, just think. Jason Day is showing the same photos to his friends and is saying to them, Look whose locker I'm near!
Well you'd better be up and at'em if you want to see the 1st wave on the Open. Tee times start just before 5am CDT. That track at Troon looks diabolical to me. Pot bunkers, miss the fairway and you are dead and of course the weather. Scheffler is the betting favorite but I can't see him winning. It's going to be somebody who gets hot and hits fairways and can putt. Aberg kept missing left on Sunday and it he hasn't fixed that he is dead on this course. Bryson is reported to be leaving the driver out of the bag, I'll believe it when I see it. I do think Rory will be in contention but his putter will keep him from winning. Tiger says he feels great, I bet he doesn't make the cut.
Wow....Rory shot a 78 and is +7, the current leader is Justin Thomas at -3. Rory going to have to have a heck of a 2nd round to make the cut. I'm pretty shocked. Bryson at 76 (+5) is another shocker.
Yes, JT has been very inconsistent for a couple of years now. You can see the talent is there, but the consistency just isn't where he needs to be a top golfer right now. Shane Lowery was the leader in the clubhouse at-5,but Daniel Brown (who he?) was bogey free, 25 putts and 12 of 13 fairways to finish - 6. He's missed 6 out of his last 7 cuts. Typical of the The Open.
Lowrey holds the lead with the unknown Brown right behind. Scottie is in the top 5 along with Stu's locker room mate! I watched the back nine of Bryson, Aberg and Tom Kim... talk about painful to watch.
Usually I pull for the American players but I would like to see Rose win one. Seems like a nice bloke and he probably doesn't have many other chances to win the Open. It might mean more to him than any other player.
Call me crazy but I'm thinking if that guy Scheffler could putt he'd be a pretty decent player! I hate that for him when he struggles so badly on the greens
PGA TOUR is in Minnesota this week, field post The Open is not great as you would expect. One guy who is in the field is Nick Dunlap, who with his win in the Barracuda Open last week becomes the first player in the history of the PGA TOUR to win a tournament as an Amateur and as a Pro in the same year. The women are in Calgary this week, sans Nelly Korda.
Historiclly there are 4 Majors. At one time the US Am was considered one but it was replaced by the PGA Championship. Certainly the field in the Olympics is major-like and it is a 72 hole event. It's probably more difficult to win since it occurs every 4 years but I have to agree with Stu. It doesn't seem to have the pressure to win as much with the players.
FedEx Cup starts this week at TPC Southwind in Memphis for the St. Jude Open. I have played Southwind one time and it's a challenging course as are all the TPC courses. 70 golfers will tee it up for the St. Jude, the top 50 go on to the BMW at Castle Pines in Colorado. Certainly Scottie will be the odds on favorite to win the Cup and should he do it, it's will be the capper for a great year. Since the Cup started in 2007 only Tiger Woods (twice) and Jordan Spieth have been ranked #1 in points and gone on to win the Cup. So history is not on Scotties side. Billy Horschel was 69th in the points standings the year he won. Get hot at the end, that's the playoffs in every sport. In an odd finish to the Wyndham this weekend, Matt Kuchar was the only player to elect not to finish the 18th hole and he had to come back this morning to finish. His playing partners finished the hole. His reasoning was it was crucial for him to get a par and preserve his standing and get his Tour Card for 2025. He didn't make the FedEx Cup playoffs his first miss in 17 years. Kuchar met the media after signing his card, first apologizing to those who had to stay for his somewhat anticlimactic finish. He doesn’t look much at social media, he said, but he was aware that his decision not to finish Sunday caused a stir across the golf social media community. He had been eliminated from FedExCup Playoffs contention, his record 17-year Playoffs streak coming to a close, but he figured that he would have done well to make a bogey on Sunday night (he needed time to assess his options, and daylight had quickly faded). His Monday morning par assured a T12 finish, while a bogey would have dropped him to T21. Kuchar jumps 10 spots to No. 103 on the FedExCup standings; the top 125 after the FedExCup Fall will retain exempt status for 2025.
