Probably not this trip Mike, but I'll be back in Fla in Feb for my oldest sisters 85th Bday. Maybe we can get together during that trip.
Sitting in the Jacksonville airport waiting for my flight home. Had a great time at Sawgrass. Played Dye's Valley on Thursday and it's a very nice course, lots of water of course. Greens were pristine but not as highly contoured as what I saw at the Whistling Straits courses. Beautiful vistas in every direction. Did card a birdie though. I struggled on some of the par 5's, got in their fairway sand traps and ended up with a double because I tried to advance the ball down the fairway and the sand was that fine sand and I'm not used to that and it took another shot to just get out of the trap and continue to play. But i did break 90 (89) so I was pretty happy with my play. Donated a couple of balls to the gator ponds! The Stadium Course was really awesome, again water was pretty much on every hole. But except 17, not really shots over water as opposed to not fading or hooking into the water off the tee. The design of the course was clear for accommodating fans on the mounds/hills esp up around greens. I struggled a bit on the front 9, but caught fire on the back 9 played the last 4 holes in 1 under. I hit #17 pin high right to a back pin, made par. Birdied both 15 and 18. 18 was my best hole. On the tee box you look out and you see what we've all seen for years as they come home on Sunday. I hit my best drive of the day and was center cut in the fairway 150yds out. back pin. Took my 7 hybrid and hit the shot of the trip for me, hit to 6 inches and got the birdie. Even my caddie was going wow that's going to be close when I hit it. So, I was a happy camper, shot 88 (broke 90) hit the island green, all goals reached. I have to say Ponte Verde is a great little area. We ate at some great restaurants; and the service was great everywhere we went. The Golf staff from the guy taking your bag to the guy cleaning your clubs at the end of the round were all 5*. Of course, I didn't play the tournament tees, so I really played a different course than what we see on TV. I played what they called blended tee's, a combination of tee's that added up to around 5800 yards which is pretty much what i play all the time.
I'd have to wear extra dark sunglasses, you know those kind you need when you look at an eclipse, to play with you!!
There are a number of former athletes who became dentists. Dr. Carey Middlecoff ...was a dentist before professional golf Dr. Billy Cannon ...LSU great who also became an Orthodontist Dr. Gary Cuozzo ...former NFL QB who became an Orthodontist Dr. Fred Hansen ...Olympic Gold Medalist in Tokyo, High Jump, was a GP not too far from my office. Dr. Ken McAfee ...One of the all-time ND greats, played with Joe Montana ..is an Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeon There might be others, but those jumped out at me.
Supposedly Spitz was admitted to the IU Dental School, but never attended after his spectacular Olympic performance.
I see that Lexi Thompson didn't make the cut in 'Vegas. No big surprise there, but she played well all things considering. On the LPGA tour her advantage when things are going well is her distance, that is wiped out when she plays in a PGA tour event. I wouldn't be surprised if her driving distance is dead last in the field. But 69 on Friday was a very good round for her.
Today is AJ's birthday, I think we need to start a GoFundMe so that we can get him a gift certificate to Peter Millar and he can then get a golf shirt that won't blind his playing partners! Happy Birthday Marine.
Thanks Doc! Me and momma went to Misty's and had surf and turf. You don't want to know the market price on King Crab Legs. Misty's was the #1 Hang out for Bob Devaney back in the day. Legend has it he perfected the old fashion recipe they still use to this day.
I'll kick in on a new golf shirt just so he doesn't walk around looking like the Green Giant or Kernel Sanders. Happy Birthday!
Ah. I'm an idiot. AJ, belated happy birthday! I need to pay more attention to what's going on. George, let my above post be the earliest birthday wish you've ever received.
