Another sign you have too much money. World No. 3 Rory McIlroy was docked $3 million for withdrawing from this week's RBC Heritage under new PGA rules regarding "designated events." The fine is for a second absence from a designated event and will be withheld from the $12 million payment to McIlroy from the Player Impact Program. The PGA Tour confirmed Friday that McIlroy will not be getting the $3 million. The tournament began Thursday at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and no reason was specified for the 33-year-old Northern Ireland star's withdrawal. McIlroy missed the cut at last week's Masters after carding a 5-over 77 on Friday.
McIlroy was key in coming up with these mandatory events and the penalties. It's kind of strange that he has not given any reason for the withdrawal.
I like watching the RBC as for about 5 years in a row the family did a week at Hilton Head and we usually played Harbor Town as one of our courses. So I can relate to many of the holes. Really enjoyed those trips, I'm not really much of a beach person, but HH Island has a lot of hike/bike trails and we'd always do side trips to Bluffton and Beaufort.
My nephew Matt who I have posted about before, he's a high level Amateur. Today he made it through the local we qualifying for the U S OPEN. He shot a 69 at Deerwood out side of Houston. This puts him in the Sectional in Dallas later in May. Much tougher field.
Doc, let me know if he's "looking". I coulda helped him to a 67 at a minimum. Also, I can take care of my own travel.
Watched the Chevron, 1st major of the season for the LPGA. Angel Yin needed AJ on the bag, she had it all going then she stopped listening to her her caddie and she folded. Lilia Vu chunked her putt from over the back a bit and was looking at a long putt to win and drained it.
YOU GO MARINE!! BTW, writer mispelled Corps....again. PXG founder rebukes LIV Golf, declined to renew player contracts
I was wondering about the connection between Parsons and the Corps, turns out he was a Marine. Did you get a discount from them when you got your PXG Irons?
Down Mexico way, South of the Border a song recorded by many including, Frank Sinatra, Gene Autry, etc. That's this week's theme as the tour heads to Mexico. Jon Rahm as the defending Champion will be there but otherwise a somewhat weak field. In a significant move it appears that the Ryder Cup could have LIV golfers in the field. I'm not sure why they have made this move.
Golf Channel had a 30 minute infomercial called "We Go Farther" It's about the development of the current line of Titlest Drivers. I don't own one, I'm a PING guy. But it was fascinating. You can watch it in 5 segments on their Youtube Channel.
I watched the LPGA Team event going on now at Harding Park and the USA is the #1 seed. Lilia Vu, Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson and Danielle Kang are the team. They split their 4 ball with China the lowest seed. Korda and Vu beat their opponents 2 and1, Thompson and Kang lost to their opponent 1 down. I felt sorry for poor Lexi Thompson, she might as well have been playing by herself, Danielle who is usually a really solid player couldn't find a fairway to save her life, might as well called her Layup Kang. Lexi played pretty well but she's not a great putter and could have used a partner who hit some greens and gave her some support. Watching Nelly Korda who truly has a beautiful swing and makes so many great shots, she's also not a great putter at least not right now. She burns the edges but can't get them to drop. Lexi is known for being long off the tee but and she is but she has a weird follow through. Her Chinese opponent who is about 6 inches shorter than Lexi out drove her on several holes and on the critical #18 the American's last chance for a tie, of course Kang was in the rough and had to layup but both the Chinese player and lexi were in the fairway. Lexi was shorter and both hit 3 woods I assume. The Chinese girl hit hers on the green and Lexi hit hers in the green side bunker. That was the ball game. The surprise of the day is the #2 seeded Korean's dropped both matches to Australia.
Now that I think about it, saying the current #1 player in the Womens World Golf isn't a great putter does seem a bit off! But watching her recently she's always seems to be in position to make a birdie and settles for par not a bad putt but just as I said burns the cup or something leaving her with a kick in but no cigar.
It seems the best players just keep hitting fairways and greens and wait on their putter to get hot. Then they make more money while they can.
