Pretty classic Spurrier. I think he would have been a little less gracious if it was FSU, but he's pretty straight forward always. Interesting comment I heard last night by one of the talking heads about Spurrier. Along the lines he would be missed when he retires. I remember when he was at Florida how much heat he always took, and sometimes generated on himself. Now he'll be missed. I will miss him that's for sure. I don't know what would have happened if he had stayed at Florida. Meyer is a different guy and as I've said before that at this point in time, after Spurrier chose to leave Florida, Meyer is the best fit for us. But when I can watch S. Carolina and it doesn't conflict with a Gator game I always watch S. Carolina and root for them. Florida would not be where we are today if Spurrier had not come to Gainesville and led us out of the wilderness.
I echo all of those thoughts Bill. I also wonder where we would be if Steve had been re-hired instead of Meyer. My gut says we are better off in today's college game with the youthful energy and intensity of Meyer but I'll bet Steve could have won at least another SEC Championship or two if he had returned.
Didn't seem to me that he enjoyed being "clobbered." Oh well, one can only hope that he tastes that quite a few more times. He could sure dish it out.
Great game .... ranks up there with, maybe surpasses, the LSU game for the best '08 game in The Swamp ... Go Gators!!! BTW .... Justin Trattou is becoming quite an accomplished SDE for UF!! ;^) 8)
Spurrier's comments: "That's why Spurrier, who has seen his share of dominant, scoreboard-rattling Florida teams, said this of the Gators. "This team's a lot better than that [eventual national champion] two years ago. I said they had a chance because they won all the close ones two years ago. ... But this team that they've got now is a lot stronger." ....yeah baby!
two ways of looking at praise. 1. he means it 2. he is placing high praise and expectations on a team that serves his own self-interest. His team already won the title. If this team doesn't, well.... you can see the angle....
At his age I doubt if SOS has it in him to take over Tenn and rebuild them. I would imagine he's ready to hang'em up.
Let me make a few comments about Spurrier. Gipper, of course he didn't like being clobbered, who would? However you don't understand him very well if you think that means he was upset with Meyer and/or the Gators. This is the same guy who after Nebraska laid 60 plus points on him said he wished Nebraska had not taken a knee near our goal line at the end of the game. Spurrier also made the comments above about the Gators and when he shook Meyer's hand said go win four more games. No doubt he's upset getting beat that bad, but he'll direct it at his own team not the Gators. As far as him retiring, it would not shock me completely. Us Gators always had him pegged as the kind of guy that can walk away from coaching and enjoy life in a different manner. He loves to play golf, is deeply involved with his family and we figured him to retire early and not hang on like Bowden and JoePa. However I think he stays at S. Carolina 3 - 5 more years myself.
Bill I would agree that SOS having administered a number beat downs doesn't seem like the type that can't take it when he's on the other side. But I can't imagine that he would stay around for another 3-5 years. Holtz got USC back to respectable, and I'm sure Spurrier thought he could take it to another level. But I just don't see it happening for So. Carolina. Things are as good now as they'll ever be, they are competitive in the SEC but just are never going to be able to compete on the recruiting trail with UF, Tenn, UGA, Alabama, LSU. I would think he'd be a little frustrated right now seeing that he can't get them up to the top level.
