So....what was your take on the two incidents....one call....one non-call. Did you see any reason UF should have been called and Tenn not called for celebration and since the one on Florida came on a tackle for a big loss on 3rd down do you think it affected the final score? Just asking for honest answers....one that you can live with should the calls go the other way one day.
MCG, I do not watch games looking for someone to screw me like you do. There are ALWAYS discrepancies in what you perceive to be right and what others perceive. I have grown to understand that. If I could find more takers, I could make a living off of it.
Quite the contrary....I am always hoping for better officiating than that. When every Gator fan in the stadium is heavily booing not only on the Gator call but especially on the missed/non-call on Tenn afterward then I take comfort in the fact that most Gator fans understand what I am saying here. I heard also that CBS talked about it as well but you must have covered your ears or went to the john. Enjoy that defense and hope for an offense to go with it.....
Dave, Listen to every single game played. The volume or the frequency of the home fans objections to calls is relative to whether they are called against the home team or the visitors. It has nothing... ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the validity. For it to be surprising to you that someone would doubt the above statement is unbelievable. I have seen this way too many times at Tennessee. If the call is against Tennessee, it matters not if it was evident that it was good or bad call. It was against Tennessee so the fans go rabid. It's the same everywhere. If the call is obvious and it cost you the game, I might understand. You have a habit of bitching and moaning about things that just doesn't matter. We on the Skybox know that you will be here complaining about refs. That is not in question. How bad the rant is and how quickly will it come is the only thing we have to wager on.
I was at the game....and the Tenn player's actions occurred in my end of the stadium and trust me I formed an instant opinion and I didn't need 80,000 Gator fans to tell me how to react. It was instantaneous. It was like adding lighter fluid to the fire from the call against Fla a short few minutes earlier. In fact...without one or the other I would not have had much of a problem with either but when you tie the two together and the way they went down the non-call on Tenn was illuminated and that's why the crowd reaction was as strong as it was. In fact....that was louder than I have heard any boos at the Swamp in recent years.
Happy that I get to vent a little but I remain unhappy with the vagaries and inequities of the game that are perpetuated by the ineptitudes of the referees. I think it is obvious that they screwed up on this one and they should have been consistent in those calls. Frankly the call on UF was ticky tack as it did not appear to be much of a demonstration and I hate that stupid rule in the first place because it is applied so subjectively. In this game the sequence of events had no ultimate bearing on the winner of the game but we have seen other games where similar calls had a direct influence on the game. I would love to see the conference continue to work on how they go about managing the performance of SEC officiating to the point where inconsistency and "oops" calls do not have win/loss bearing on the games. I am certain this game will be reviewed and hopefully discussed in the inner circle of the SEC offices to the point where improvement can be derived from it.
Interesting comments by Meyer: "With Thompson out Saturday, the Gators had no down-field passing game to speak of. That was partly due to Tennessee's zone coverages and partly to conservative play-calling by UF. Meyer said in retrospect, maybe he should have opened things up a little bit more in the offense. But he said the Vols were making no effort to win the game and there was no reason to take any unnecessary risks. "I didn't feel like they were going after the win," Meyer said. "They wanted to shorten the game. I think that was the plan. There are 10 minutes to go and they're not in a no-huddle. It's 23-6 and no urgency (on UT's part). "The way we lose a game there is throw an interception. Why put yourself in that position. Let's find a way to win the game. We're not trying to impress the pollsters, we're trying to win the game. A lot of it had to do with the way they were playing. It made our life a little easier." Seemed noticeable to me also just sitting in the stands that Tenn didn't seem to be urgent about trying to win the game. Very unusual strategy.
Sagrain is out....Gators are #21, Hurricanes are #1. Oh my it's one weird looking top 10. 1 Miami-Florida 2 Florida State 3 Cincinnati 4 Boise State 5 LSU 6 Southern California 7 Iowa 8 Georgia Tech 9 Alabama 10 California Sagrin
Based on the quality of these teams' opponents in their first 2-3 games and how they've performed, these rankings are not completely out of line. IMO it's closer to reality at this point of the season than the "usual" polls. Of course, there are those whose teams have been ordained as top teams, but who have not had a real test yet, who will question these rankings. I question the absence of Texas and the inclusion of Ga. Tech It's a long season. There will be many changes as the weeks pass, both in the BCS-related polls and in Sagarin.
Seems noticeable to me that you didn't watch the UCLA Game where any attempt to go downfield resulted in a Crompton interception. It seems obvious to me that you didn't see, maybe went to the john, the only attempt down the field in this game that resulted in a Crompton interception. If you were puzzled about the lack of that "effort" you must be saying that the Gator defense is on par or sub par with that of UCLA. Is that the case? If not, then it should be obvious why the Tennessee offense stayed with short passes and the ground attack. That UF defense allowed 13 points and only one interception that meant anything with that inept offense, maybe they are sub par compared to UCLA.
Actually the UF defense did pretty well vs. UT....holding them to just over 200 yards, 3.7 yards per rush and there were two picks by the secondary. Pretty good day in the SEC East.
Before we shut this down... You stay classy Urban.... I'm just sayin... when Kiffin fires up the quote machine in the future (and you know it will happen), I don't want to hear anything about St Urban. He is right though in that I believe they were daring UF all day to throw the ball downfield. I also think UF wanted UT to do the same thing. UF had the better team and could win without taking that risk.
Why not?.....Lane has a year before he has to face Urban again....it's in Knoxville....and TT will be in the NFL. I suspect he will get braver and braver throughout the coming year with the quotables..
That never seemed to bother you when the missiles were being fired out of the Gator camp by Spurrier. oh, that's right... 80,000 Gators thought it was ok so it must be.
ha! he was under your skin the day he took the job. he didn't blink when facing the greatest Gator team to ever take the field while he is at the foundation level of a rebuilding project. As one without a dog in this fight, I'm tellin ya... you better be concerned about this guy. A big, big reason that you guys dominated this series for the last decade plus is that you are clearly in UT's head. This guy took the job and said 'Screw Florida! We're Tennessee!!' You aren't in his head and he recruits well. You guys just put a solid win on Tennessee at home and the Volnation is actually kinda happy with the results and the direction of the program. You guys have earned that status in college football in which you are living off the fear of opponents a little bit. SC is there. ND was there many moons ago. You better respect the loose cannon who has decided to make you a long-term priority or you will live to lament it. There was a time when Florida was just another team too...
