it was for the division title for you. They did call you out, but then again, everyone called you out and still do. You know full damned well you ducked them. He was shaking and crying dude... mind you the trembling crier is a guy that you just said had burned his last bit of good will the week before. I don't really see how you can disavow a team and reclaim them week to week like it's your fantasy squad.
"You know full damned well you ducked them." ******** on the above. I never "disavowed" my team.... I just acknowledged how difficult it is for any Florida team or other teams as well to win in the Death Valley vs. playing the Tigers in our place. And this Florida team has not really overpowered too many and they don't really pass the eye test because of a mediocre offense and I readily acknowledged that. I just try to be realistic about the Gators and beating LSU this year at their place was a very difficult proposition.... that proved to be true. The fact that UF was called out by LSU I believe was the Tiger's demise.
Great article on the game here in the Tampa Tribune: http://www.tampabay.com/sports/college/fennelly-win-at-lsu-ranks-among-the-greatest-in-florida-gators-history/2303537
I do believe this quote by Tabor aptly illustrates the motivation UF had on Saturday in Baton Rouge: “We were terrified of them boys,” said Jalen Tabor with a straight face. “I guess out of fear, we just fought back.” LMAO
It is hard to imagine that being one of the greatest Gator victories, even given the circumstances between the two schools...but in reality the greatest victories tend to be the most recent in fans minds. A great victory in 1949 wouldn't be remembered by many under 90!
Certainly the 3 wins in the NC Title game have meant more....and there was an 11-10 game over Georgia when I was in school when we went for two and made it that was awesome.. close wins over Alabama, Auburn, FSU and many others plus even a goal line stand over SEC Champion Tennessee in the 1969 Gator Bowl to preserve a one point win. But in the last few years of frustration and considering that Gator fans are still searching for hope with the relatively new guy McElwain this one was special. It denied the SEC East to fierce rival Tenn even though they beat us, it shut the yapping traps of all of the LSU players and media alike who crazily doubted Florida's motivations for not playing the game in October with Matthew approaching and it turned the outcome sour for the LSU AD who was such an ass in whole affair. Not to mention beating LSU in Death Valley when you're a two TD dog is nothing to sneeze at..... especially when some of your stars of the game are true freshmen or sophomores filling in for injured starters. All in all very satisfying for fans and players alike.
I'd agree with all that and it did have to be a very satisfying win...but even some of those games you mentioned like 69 Gator bowl...you'd have a hard time finding any Gator Fans under age 40 who remember that game. It's like when I heard a ESPN commentator say that Mike Trout might be the greatest ball player in MLB history. He's a great ball player for sure, but that jumps him ahead of a lot of players people don't really remember that much because they haven't played in recent memory.
Hey I was in attendance at that Gator Bowl game.... and it was memorable with future NFL Hall of Fame member Jack Youngblood leading the D on the goal line stand at the end of the game. But in any event we look to the future always as CFB fans.... "wait 'till next year" is everyone's mantra. So a win like Saturday in BR makes a Gator fan think there is something to look forward to.
As a lifelong Cubs' fan, I finally have dropped that mantra from my Cubs conversations. As a forlorn Notre Dame fan, I've picked up that mantra relating to the sad state of ND football.
I could live with our mediocrity if we weren't talented. I mean, that would be an explanation. But we're putting guys out there who are playing on Sunday and doing quite well. How good does Procise look playing for Pete Carroll?
Frankly I'm kind of surprised you ND guys aren't calling for Kelly's head by now. Think you would give Les Miles a try? He does play that ND grind em out type offense.
Well if you visited the main ND boards there is a loud cry for Kelly to be fired after the USC game. I'm frustrated with Kelly as much as the next guy, and I'm in the camp that if they fire him he's earned it, but if they give him another year I'm not going to throw a tantrum. As far as Les Miles goes, I think he's a non-starter for the Irish. I'll give you that he did a good job at LSU for the most part and lucked into a Nat'l title with a 2 loss team. But he's never had a very good offense and quick name me a LSU QB that he's had that was really any good? Good defenses for sure and he's benefited no doubt from the wealthy of talent that for a small state Louisiana has in it's HS system. All those kids pretty much are born to go to LSU, so recruiting is pretty easy for him. But I'll pass on Les.
LSU also draws talent from Texas, Ms. and Florida so yes they always have good athletes on hand. Miles could never get his clubs up in the Bama stratosphere and that was a huge black mark against him for keeping his job. So if ND is loking for an elite guy to replace Kelly who would that be?
I don't think there is an elite guy out there for the Irish. I think if they let Kelly go they will have to go with an up and comer who doesn't have a big resume. Even Tom Herman has a rather thin resume as a HC. But as you Gators know sometimes a guy like Urban who only had 2 years at Ball State, and 2 very successful years at Utah but was never a coordinator can be that guy.
Urban was THE hot coaching up and comer at the time and UF was very fortunate to get him. Tom Herman may be that guy now but Texas and LSU have first dibs I'll bet. What about Justin Fuentes at West Va.? By the way I just can't see Jimbo leaving FSU for LSU..... unless he is just plain tired of Tallahassee.
There are guys like Fuente who have a little more going for them, but boy would they leave after just 1 year? I don't know.
Corey, a press conference by the LSU AD doesn't mean it is so. When the decision was made, as I recall the SEC commissioner complimented Florida and not LSU. Playing the game in Florida that weekend made no sense at all as the storm was changing course and could have hit the whole state. As it turned out the game could have been played but that wasn't clear until it was to late to make all the arrangements. Regardless they have to come to the Swamp the next two years.
The LSU AD had made a stink about it because he wanted to show that Foley was pulling a stunt. I think you don't seem to realize, this game wasn't going to be played AT ALL. The SEC Commish had to finally step in and make the game happen. Then, they all made nice for the cameras. LSU got what they wanted (they didn't lose a home game for the season), Florida got a little pay back for LSU being stubborn in that they get 2 consecutive home dates against LSU. But make no mistake, without the SEC Commissioner stepping in, that game wouldn't have been played at all. The only folks I've ever even heard remotely defend Foley are the most die hard of Gator fans.
There may have been a lot of miscommunication.... inaccurate weather forecasting and lines drawn in the sand but truly there was no conspiracy on UF's part to "duck" the Leonard Fournette-less Tigers: http://www.outkickthecoverage.com/what-really-happened-with-lsu-and-florida-101316 Ultimately Florida gave up two home games to get the damn thing done and LSU couldn't give up one to play in Gainesville on the 19th? I don't see how Foley could even remotely be accused of desiring to give up the LSU game by cancellation when you examine the piss poor revenues to be derived from the rest of UF's home schedule consisting of UMass, Ky, North Texas, Missouri and SouCar. The only marquis game on the home schedule was LSU and Foley just wanted it cancelled??? Ludicrous thinking.....
