Ron Zook went to an eventual national championship team's home stadium and laid the wood to them ( LSU in 2003 ). Ron Zook also coached UF to two great wins over top 5 ranked Georgia teams and he took UF to Doak Campbell and did something Steve Spurrier never could do and that was get a win over FSU at their place. I'm not sure what Weis has done in the win column as a college head coach that makes him head and shoulders above Ron Zook and creates all of your optimism.
Yes but Spurrier didn't....that's a whole new ballgame when UF strolls into town there. And you are ignoring those other monumental Zook wins I mention. I will say that while Chollie dioesn't have the big wins on his resume he does beat the ones that he should...like Ga Tech this Sat. at home.
Geez, the pizzing contests we get into. :? Stu's take: Charlie Weiss will bring ND back to the elite...but not this yr. Ron Zook will have success at Illinois. Jim Tressel will wear a sweater vest and Michigan will wear ugly helmets.
In his second game, ND beat UM at the Big House. (UM was ranked in the top 5 at the time) That was a big win and a win over a top 10 team.
Doesn't win the big ones... not exactly. Beat Tennessee. Beat UCLA. Beat Michigan. Beat Michigan State at MSU after spotting them a huge lead. Beat a number of teams where we were underdogs at kickoff. He has not finished the job against the very elite.
I'm hoping for 7-8 wins and a bowl victory. It's certainly possible; this is the deepest Irish squad we've seen in a while. I told a hater recently that if you want to beat the Irish you'd better get 'em now. By 2009 they'll be a juggernaut.
I agree <t>7 to 8 wins and I am happy.<br/> <br/> If the Oline provides that 'nasty' that Chuckles promised when he took the job and they let our young pounders get untracked, we could win more.<br/> <br/> I'm quite excited to check out the RBs. People don't realize that we just may be a very physical running team this year. We've got 2 young RBs that are fast and physical, one of whom has great hands. AS is a blocking beast and is back after missing almost all of last year (lost him during the Michigan game). Travis Thomas was a physical LB who showed he could run the ball well. Jabbie is no slouch. I'm very, very excited about the running game.. but it all gets back to the OL...</t>
 The Irish have a good team this year and honestly, they're better, deeper, faster and more physical than last year's team. The problem isn't with the team; the problem is with the schedule. Will they be good enough to beat several outstanding opponents? Especially those on the road? That's the question for this year. Will they be good enough? :?:
"Beat Tennessee. Beat UCLA. Beat Michigan. Beat Michigan State at MSU " The only one of those teams that finished in the rankings at the end of the season was UCLA (#25 in the BCS standings only.....unranked in other polls). As a matter of fact the collective records of those three that didn't make the BCS rankings in the years that Chollie beat them was 16-19... I have to agree the names are big but the individual wins are not elite or even that terrific considering the results of their seasons. Let's see ND beat UCLA this coming year at their place which is a winnable game and I expect UCLA to have a pretty good season. This year should be a test of Weis's ability to take ND back to the promised land.
Yes they are George but I am accused of talking about the Gators too much. Guess I'll have to dwell on ND....maybe Ohio State....maybe Tenn....
note to self <t>"games against SEC teams, such as Tennessee, or traditional southern powers, such as Georgia Tech, are only considered 'tough games' so long as they beat you...otherwise they are not worthy"<br/> <br/> *end of recording</t>
""games against SEC teams, such as Tennessee, or traditional southern powers, such as Georgia Tech, are only considered 'tough games' so long as they beat you...otherwise they are not worthy" Not sure where that quote came from but I think 16-19 means more. By the way I ran into a huge OSU fan tonight who feels the same way about Weis.....show me!
You open with Western Kentucky and you still have time to rap Notre Dame? Most people didn't realize WKY HAS a football team. Good grief, how long did it take Urban to dredge that corpse up?
I guess you've heard of the Hilltoppers. Didn't they beat your alma mater Dayton twice while you were going to school there?
I love Charlie's description of the Irish kickoff returners: "The outhouse or the castle." Armando Allen and Golden Tate can flat-out fly, but they're both true freshmen playing their first game. Its a roll of the dice. The outhouse or the castle...
