Republicans Aren’t Rolling Over Commentary Magazine Obama chief strategist David Axelrod shouldn’t have been surprised to see that a lot of Republicans turned up at the kickoff at the Statehouse in Bostonfor his campaign event tearing down Mitt Romney’s record as governor of Massachusetts. Though the event was supposedly a secret, it reportedly was leaked on Twitter, and a GOP response team was quick to react. Romney supporters chanting “Solyndra” — a reference to the failed energy company that was the recipient of so much Obama administration largesse, heckled Axelrod, turning the gathering into a bipartisan shouting match rather than an Obama show. The same day, Romney staged an event at the Fremont, California headquarters of Solyndra in a carefully planned attempt to upstage the Democrat’s efforts to seize control of the news cycle. While all of this can and should just be put down to the usual give and take of a hotly contested presidential campaign, it does show that a lot has changed since the last time Axelrod was running a national campaign. Whereas in 2008, the campaign of John McCain was clearly outmatched in terms of technology and smarts by the “hope and change” juggernaut that put Barack Obama in the White House, in 2012 the GOP is determined not to roll over for the Democrats. If today is any indication of how things will go the next five months, Axelrod is in for a long, hard slog against an opponent capable of nimbly returning serve and scoring points even on days that the Chicago campaign guru thought would belong to him.
stay level boys, this is going to get real ugly before it's over and I just don't see anyone but Obama winning.
Corey I can see Obama still getting a large percentage of the African American vote but I can't see near the same turn out. Another large voting bloc for him was the youth vote. No way all these unemployed grads with big loans fall for his jive again. I occasionally hear someone say I voted for Obama the last time but not this time. I've never heard anyone say that they didn't vote for him last time buy will this time. The turnout will be the difference.
Barring unforeseen happenings I do not see Obama winning. In fact, I think he'll lose soundly. He won the last time on hype. Now he has to defend. He has virtually nothing to campaign on. People will look in the mirror and realize that their lives have gotten steadily worse since 2009. Only the true socialist/idealist and the totally dependent will vote for Obama this time.
George/Gip You guys both make great points but I very much believe that you aren't grasping the ignorance of the American youth bloc that voted for him last time. They still equate GOP with the banks/loans and those who will keep them in debt until their 70s...nevermind that one of the first things Obama did was sign into action the debt collection companies owned by the original lenders a 2nd chance at taking that bite of the apple of debt again. In all honesty, I'd just as soon see someone blow up the student loan debt issue. It's an albatross hanging around the neck from everyone GenX and younger... Don't ever count out the women either... Abortion and a woman's right to choose is something that the GOP just takes a beating on. I know a whole lot of women (Catholic and otherwise) who say one thing... picket holding a sign saying the same thing... but have taken advantage of the services offered in private by planned parenthood. I have said this for a decade now (and this is coming from someone who supports gay marriage btw) that gay marriage is the Achilles heel of the Democratic party stranglehold on the minority vote. If you want to split the minority vote, ditch abortion and hammer gay marriage. Aside from New Jersey's governor, I just don't see a Republican worth a bag of **** and sadly, they are all better than anything the Democrats have...but the Democrats have a large, blind voting block... I wish you guys were right. I hope you are.. I just don't see it.
On my end of the country, everything seems very different. Four years ago, our parking lot was filled with Obama bumper stickers on almost every car except mine. The kids in the school held a mock vote and Obama won overwhelmingly. This time around, the number of Obama bumper stickers is zero. The head of our teacher's union parks right next to me every day and even he doesn't have one. Nearly every teacher that I've spoken with is either voting for Romney or saying that they won't vote for president. Our entire History department is voting for Romney without exception. As for the kids... no teacher wanted to have a mock vote this year and the reason was obvious: only a handful of kids and their parents support Obama this time. At Parent-Teacher Night, I was approached by many angry parents who wanted to meet the History teacher to make sure that he wasn't filling their kids heads with Commie crap and their hostility toward Obama and the federal government was like nothing I've ever seen in a California school before. Gipper is right: the difference here is going to be turnout. The conservatives are pissed off to beat the band and they're marching on the castle with pitchforks and torches. The Lefties are beaten down and discouraged. They thought they were getting Bobby Kennedy or Martin Luther King. Instead they got Mayor Daley leading a gay pride parade. Only the most fanatical among them will swallow hard and vote for Chicago Jesus. The failure of Jerry Brown and the teacher's union in Sacramento has worn them down too. For the Lefties here...these are dark times...

Corey's "P.T. Barnum" argument is viable but I don't think kids will turn out for this celebrity like they did last time. He's hammering the student loan angle as a way to keep their loyalty but there are too many people with degrees wearing paper hats and asking if you want ketchup with your fries. If I were Romney I would ignore gay marriage and free birth control and continue pounding on the economy. If pressed on those issues he should say that, while he is personally opposed to these issues based on his spiritual beliefs, he would not press legislation as it is a personal matter and that the country has countless more pressing matters that needs his attention. I think that would take those issues off the table.
I think the black vote will still fall 95% for OB but it's the turnout that will be down. Same for the youth vote, I don't think there will be some mass exodus for the GOP, just apathy and staying home.
The headline on today's Asbury Park Press is " Out of Work. Out of Patience" This a decidedly left leaning paper in a stae that almost always is blue.

Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and five percent (5%) are undecided. Top Democratic Strategist On Obama’s Floundering Campaign: “I’m Scared As ****”… As he should be. Via Washington Examiner: President Obama’s campaign manager had a clear message Monday for supporters wary of the president’s standing in an increasingly competitive race for the White House: Chill out. “We knew this was going to be a tough race,” Jim Messina said in the campaign’s latest web video. “Here’s one more thing you can tell your friends when they ask you about the latest polls: We’re actually ahead of where we were at this point last time around.” New polling shows Obama in a virtual dead heat with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who is gaining on the president as the economic recovery sputters and Romney distances himself from a divisive primary battle. [...] A growing chorus of Democrats, citing a shifting mood among voters, are wondering why Obama isn’t doing better than he is five months out from the election. “I’m scared as [expletive],” one top Democratic strategist told The Washington Examiner, granted anonymity to candidly discuss Obama’s re-election prospects. “This message from the campaign is clearly a laughable attempt to gloss over a terrible patch for the president.” Added Democratic strategist Doug Schoen, “It’s gone from ‘We expect he’ll be re-elected’ to ‘We think he’ll be re-elected’ to ‘We hope he’ll be re-elected’ to ‘He’ll probably be re-elected if everything goes right.’ Yes, they have something to worry about.”

Obama Spends Record Amount of Time Fundraising: Hits 153rd Fundraiser Since Announcing Reelection Bid, Bush Did Only 79 At Same Point In His Presidency… (Obama spent D-Day raising money at a Beverly Hills fundraiser. -JO'Co) Plus this pathetic excuse for a Commander-in-Chief failed to commemorate D-Day today in favor of hitting a handful of fundraisers in California. Via Politico: No, it’s not your imagination: President Barack Obama is spending a whole lot of time fundraising, perhaps more than any incumbent president in history. Including this week’s trip to California, he will have spent eight of 24 weekdays during the past month — that’s a third of them — on the road and collecting cash. His event Thursday morning will mark his 153rd fundraiser since announcing his reelection bid last year. That’s nearly double the number that his predecessor George W. Bush had attended by this point in his reelection campaign, according to CBS’s Mark Knoller, who put 43’s early June number at 79. Neither White House nor campaign officials responded to messages seeking comment.
At this point he looks worse every single day. I heard him referred to as the "First Celebrity" on TV last evening. It was suggested that the nation is and has been on auto-pilot for three years.
Hard to believe that with fund raisers and his golf games he's been in the Oval office more than one or two days a week for the past year. Of course when he's there he's doing the people's work like filling out his March Madness bracket or hosting the Alabama football team. They guy's not working, he just has a bigger welfare check than most.
