I am confident kp has already seen this but it took me by surprise! Saban: Offense, not defense, now wins games
On the other hand Brandon Peters showed why he's no longer at UM. Of course its probably too soon to declare Mertz a Heisman Candidate, as Illinois might not be very good. He goes to Lincoln and faces the Black Shirts next weekend.
On Mertz. The Irish liked both Cade McNamara and Graham Mertz equally. When they visited McNamara out in California and made an offer, he surprised them and took it on the spot so they stopped recruiting Mertz. Then later McNamara backed out of his verbal to ND and eventually ended up at Michigan. Mertz went ahead and accepted an offer from Wisconsin. When the Irish tried to get back in with Mertz after McNamara bailed on them, reportedly he was tempted as his family were ND fans, but he really had become comfortable with the Wisconsin staff and decided to stick by his verbal. We ended up with a kid from Virginia named Brendon Clark, who has potential but we'll not likely see very much of him this year unless there is an injury to Book. But watching Mertz last night sure made me wish the staff could go back in time and somehow get Mertz in South Bend.
Yeah, I saw it. With his comments on the Alabama defense not being great, I think this may be mean more of an emphasis on offense than an abandoning of defense. As you all are aware, our offensive power is recent. We have always relied on the "do no harm" type of offense and a shutdown defense. I wonder if you can have both an explosive offense and a shutdown defense? Or are there teams like Ole Miss who will score a bunch no matter what? I'm not convinced. I remember when people were convinced that there was no way to stop the triple option/veer. It doesn't sound like Saban is giving up on defense though.
Bobda, I was listening to ESPNU on the Mich/Minn game. The guys all thought this was going to be a close game with Minn having a lot back on offense and Mich breaking in a new QB in Joe Milton. But then they said that Milton is reportedly having a great fall camp and has a shot at being the 1st QB that Harbaugh has developed at UM in the class of Andrew Luck. Has a high upside, but new OL and Collins not playing will hurt. What are UM boards saying about Milton?
I think that it IS a B1G mandate; only families of players allowed. In Ohio we could have more and still be within Dewine's guidelines but the conference decided that if some teams couldn't have fans then no teams could have fans. At least that is my understanding.
Still haven't given out the reason, as far as I can see. They did say he should be back next week. Purdue has a pretty deep receiver corps, but he is quite a talent.
Milton is a physical specimen. Reports from practice have been highly laudatory. From what I saw last year in his brief appearances, he has a tremendous arm but not terribly accurate. He look really raw last year so there is some skepticism if he has improved as much as the reports claim he has improved.
Watching the Big Red Train in 4k! Huskers score first! Ran the ball! Put Qb backup Luke McCaffrey in at Rb and he ripped off a big run. Maybe this will be a good game after all, a shoot out?
That's obvious....no pass rush either. Pretty good job by the announcers not to tip their hand who they want in the game....and for Heisman. Guess that's sour apples...oh...and his knee was down
