Trevor knight landed on the point of his elbow on his first td run, hurting his shoulder. Went to the locker room to get some work done and came back out. On what looked to me to be a late hit our of bounds he landed on the point of his elbow again, putting him out,
Haven't posted about bad refs in a long time but those bastards reffing UF-Ark seemed not to be able to call any muggings or obvious PI penalties on Ark but damned if they didn't call about 4 on Fla. More reasons UF lost than that but frustrating to watch nonetheless.
2 Alabama students were arrested last night trying to deface the field at Tiger Stadium. Pranks are only good if you pull them off, these kid probably deserve to be expelled for embarrassing Alabama!
Wazzu left no doubt in, FINALLY, a complete game, to win 69-7. There were a couple miscues early which were, thankfully, covered up by timely UA miscues. For example, the first play from scrimmage for UA was a 74 yard TD called back for ineligible downfield. UA's possessions in the first half ended up punt, INT, punt, downs, fumble, punt, TD. Second half got no better going punt, punt, punt, punt, INT. Wazzu, on the other hand, came out scoring early and often in the first half, going FG, TD, TD, TD, TD, TD, punt. They continued at a slower clip in the second half, TD, TD, FG, TD, TD, EOG. The backups took over with about 5 minutes left in the second half with our RS Freshman at the helm, leading the last three scoring drives. Luke continued to assault the Wazzu and P12 career record books, going 32/35 for 311 yards, 4 TDs, and 0 INTs. At one stretch, he had 22 straight completions, which was one short of the P12 record set by Aaron Rodgers when he was at Cal. He is #2 on the career-TD at WSU with 78, behind Connor Halliday at 90. He is a RS Junior. In his first meaningful action, Hilinski went 15/17 for 163 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs, throwing his first completions and TDs as a Coug. The Cougar defense was dominantly disruptive, recording five sacks (three by Oguayo), twelve TFLs, two interceptions, and one forced fumble. 276 yards total offense allowed on 12 possessions is not too bad for a P12 defense. GO COUGS!
Tyler? I know we were pretty excited to get him, but I had no information other than scouting reports to go by.
Hell of a defensive effort, holding LSU to 125 total yards and 6 first downs on the game. I think LSU only had 20 total yards in the second half? Alabama isn't perfect, nor is any team, but they're damn good and have so few weaknesses that they would really have to play poorly (against character) to risk a loss at this point. Congrats, Kyle.
Well maybe they should have kicked the FG then kp, they turned it over next. But the Alabama defense just so completely stuffed the LSU offense they were never in danger of losing their shutout. What a physical defensive game on both sides of the game, the difference in the game turned out to be the true freshman QB, Hurts. He made some mistakes but he made the plays that he needed to get the Tide the the win. Just an observation, it looks to me that Alabama has evolved into a Spread team. They run most of their plays out of a 1 back shot gun, they do get under center in a more traditional I formation but not that often, at least in this game. And as many stud RB's as Bama has they rely quite a bit on Hurts to run the ball, so they aren't a pass first spread like say Texas Tech or CAL but more of a power spread sort of like what Gus ran with Cam Newton. Great game though, what an atmosphere and the talent on display was terrific. LSU just still doesn't have a QB, of course it would have helped if their OL could have held off the Bama defense. Etley is bound to be pretty sore tomorrow. But he didn't make many good throws. Neb lost Tommy Armstrong early and is just getting steam rolled by Ohio State who I guess found their mojo on offense. I wonder when the last time, if every the Huskers gave up 60+ points. Watching a little of the Wash/CAL game and the difference between Bama/LSU defenses and the WASH defense is stark. In fact the whole WASH team looks small compared to the beef I saw in the LSU/Bama game.
Not quite the game I expected this evening. We pretty much had our way with the Huskers all the way. Our offense has been sputtering and thought if Armstrong would get hot, we could have a difficult game. Goes to prove you never know quite wheat is going to happen from one Saturday to the next. Armstrong appeared in street clothes after being hurt in the first half. That was good news! His head hit the turf hard and really bounced around. He was taken to the hospital for observation but released, no concussion I assume?
Bama @ LSU As stated in another post, excellent display by Bama. The only contest that stands between Bama and the SECW title is against Auburn. +1 NU @ OSU I never expected it to be this lopsided, but I guess once it started running downhill, it wasn't going to be stopped. Both OSU and NU have a path to win their respective divisions, but NU now needs help and depends on winning tie-breakers. Depending on what else happens, OSU may need PSU to lose even if they beat UM. +1 ND @ Navy ND's offense didn't look bad late, but ended with a FG and never got the ball back. It's hard to keep the offense rolling when you only get two possessions in a 30 minute half. Navy got the kickoff in the second half and drove for 4 minutes for a TD, 9 minutes for a TD, and 7-1/2 minutes to end the game (possession ended on the ND 15 with a 1st and 10). +1 tu @ TT TT had their chances late but tu gets the win. -1 A&M @ MsSU :O Color me shocked. A&M played about as poorly as I think they are capable of playing, and MsSU took it to them. Gees. -1 Louisville @ BC Louisville did not get caught this week and did not sleepwalk. +1 Wisc @ NW Wisc defense continues to impress me. Again, NW didn't play poorly, but they were outmatched. Wisc now controls their own destiny in the B10W. I think NW still has a path to the B10W with a lot of help (if they win out, they get to 6-3 and would then need NU and Wisc to lose 2 more, but would own the tie-breaks over Minn and Iowa). +1 UMD @ UM UM wins big to keep their hold on the B10W. At this point, they can still give a game as long as they beat OSU. UMD is out of the divisional race. +1 TCU @ BU Here's another one that I completely wiffed on. BU still has a path to the B12 championship, but needs a lot of help (they need to beat OU and WV and OkSU to beat OU, at a minimum). Having lost to OU and WV, I don't think TCU has a tie-break scenario that gets them the B12. -1 UF at Ark Nailed it. UF still controls their own destiny in the SEC. If UK knocks off Tenn next weekend, UF would have a game to give. If Tenn wins, they would need to keep pace with Tenn wins. That's not going to be easy with LSU coming up in three weeks. Ark is a pretty good team who plays in a TOUGH division and likely will never sniff an SECW title. +1 Tenn Tech @ Tenn Tenn is bowl eligible. Way to go. +1 UA @ WSU I posted the game review in an earlier post, and P12N held serve. 7 wins in a row, and 6-0 to start conference play. UA will not be going bowling this year. +1 FSU @ NSCU NCSU gave a good run at it, dropping the INT for the last reasonable chance to get the upset, but FSU came back late to steal it. Neither team has a path to the division championship. +1 UO @ USC There's a lot of teams taking out years of frustration on the Ducks this year, and they're helpless to stop it. UO's bowl hopes are on a razor edge, needing to win out against Stanford, UU, and OrSU to get to 6 wins. USC keeps pace in the P12S hoping CU and UU each pick up another loss (one loss will be achieved when they play each other in three weeks). +1 KU @ WV And WV gets healthy against a really bad KU team. WV is in good shape to win the B12 with a game against OU in two weeks. If they get that win, they need to root for OU to win bedlam. +1 Iowa @ PSU PSU picks up the big win. PSU still has a path, but needing some help with UM. Iowa's chances at the division are narrower after the loss, needing Minn to lose one, Wisc to probably lose two, and NW to lose one. If all of them end with 3 losses, the tie-breaks get interesting, but the path is there. +1 UGA @ UK So, so, so close to the upset. UGA gets the win on a 4th quarter comeback and late FG. UGA cannot win the SECE. UK still can, but would need to beat Tenn AND UF to lose to both SCAR and LSU. -1 uw @ Cal Recall that Wazzu beat UA 69-7...earlier, UA lost to uw 35-28 in OT. CFP rankings Tuesday should have OSU at #4, Louisville at #5, and uw at #6. -1 OkSU @ KSU Upset (don't know how KSU was the favorite, but I'll take it) achieved. This loss removes KSU from the conference race. OkSU keeps their race alive and, thanks to Bedlam, control their own conference destiny. +1 +14 / -5
5 ranked teams go down, 3 of which were upsets to UR teams (ranking is CFP/AP): - #4/#7 A&M goes down (to UR/UR 4-5 MsSU) for their 2nd loss - #10/#9 NU goes down (to #6/#6 8-1 OSU) for their 2nd straight loss - #11/#10 UF goes down (to UR/UR 6-3 Ark) for their 2nd loss - #13/#15 LSU goes down (to #1/#1 9-0 Bama) for their 3rd loss (1st under O) - #17/#13 BU goes down (to UR/UR 5-4 TCU) for their 2nd straight loss 4 ranked teams win by a TD or less to UR teams: - #9/#11 Auburn wins by 7 (over/UR UR 4-5 Vandy) - #18/#22 OkSU wins by 6 (over UR/UR 5-4 KSU) - #19/#23 VT wins by 3 (over UR/UR 3-6 Duke) - #22/#19 FSU wins by 4 (over UR/UR 4-5 NCSU) Five unbeatens remain: Clemson (9-0) UM (9-0) WMU (9-0) uw (9-0) Bama (9-0) Six 1-loss teams remain: Louisville(8-1) WV (7-1) OSU (8-1) BSU (8-1) may meet SDSU (8-1) in the MWCCG Troy (7-1) Teams that still have a path to represent their division in their CG (or win the B12): ACCA - Clemson, Louisville, WF ACCC - VT, UNC B12 - OU, OkSU, BU, WV (I think KSU, TCU, and tu lose out on 3-way or more tie-breakers) B10E - UM, OSU, PSU, IU B10W - NU, Minn, Wisc, Iowa, NW (I think PU and Ill lose out on 3-way or more tie-breakers) P12N - WSU, UW P12S - CU, UU, USC SECE - UF, UK, Tenn, SCAR SECW - Bama, Auburn * I had to add SCAR. I found a situation that if UF, UK, UGA, SCAR, Tenn, and V all end with 4-4, SCAR could win win the combined head-to-head tie-breaker depending on how it falls out. There is no multi-way tie in which UGA and Vandy come out on top that I could come up with. ACC has 6 bowl eligible teams (for 9 contracted slots, plus 2 additional conditional slots). 1 cannot become bowl eligible. B12 has 4 bowl eligible teams (for 7 contracted slots, plus 1 additional conditional slot). 2 cannot become bowl eligible. B10 has 6 bowl eligible teams (for 9 contracted slots). 2 cannot become bowl eligible. P12 has 6 bowl eligible teams (for 7 contracted slots). 2 cannot become bowl eligible. SEC has 6 bowl eligible teams (for 10 contracted slots). 1 cannot become bowl eligible. P12N is 10-7 against the P12S with 7 remaining: - WSU: 3-0 (beat UCLA, ASU, UA) with 1 remaining (CU) - uw: 2-0 (beat UA, UU) with 2 remaining (USC, ASU) - Stan: 3-1 (beat USC, UCLA, UA and lost to CU) - Cal: 1-2 (beat UU and lost to ASU, USC) with 1 remaining (UCLA) - UO: 1-2 (beat ASU and lost to CU, USC) with 1 remaining (UU) - OrSU: 0-2 (lost to CU, UU) with 2 remaining (UCLA, UA) SECW is 9-1 against the SECE with 4 remaining: - Bama: 2-0 (beat UK, Tenn) - Auburn: 1-0 (beat Vandy) with 1 remaining (UGA) - A&M: 2-0 (beat SCAR, Tenn) - LSU: 1-0 (beat Mizzou) with 1 remaining (UF) - Ark: 1-0 (beat UF) with 1 remaining (Mizzou) - MsSU: 1-1 (beat SCAR and lost to UK) - Miss: 1-0 (beat UGA) with 1 remaining (Vandy)
In order of teams controlling their own destiny, the following are the teams that would make the playoff (in my mind). Obviously more losses between now and the end are coming. The first four from the list that remain not crossed off at the end of the championship games should end up being the four teams that get the four CFP berths. 1. Undefeated SEC champ (Bama) 2. Undefeated B10 champ (UM) 3. Undefeated ACC champ (Clemson) 4. Undefeated P12 champ (uw) 5. 1-loss SEC champ (Bama) 6. 1-loss B10 champ (OSU, UM) 7. 1-loss ACC champ (Clemson, Louisville) 8. 1-loss P12 champ (uw) 9. 1-loss SEC non-champ (Bama) 10. 1-loss B12 champ (WV) 11. 1-loss B10 non-champ (UM) 12. 1-loss ACC non-champ (Louisville) 13. 1-loss P12 non-champ (uw) 14. 2-loss SEC champ coming out of the SECW (Auburn) 15. 2-loss B10 champ (UM, OSU, PSU, Minn, Wisc, NU) 16. 2-loss P12 champ (uw, WSU, CU, UU) 17. 2-loss ACC champ (Clemson, WF, VT, UNC) 18. 2-loss SEC champ coming out of the SECE (UF) 19. 2-loss B12 champ (OkSU, WV, BU) 20. 2-loss SEC non-champ (Bama, A&M) 21. 2-loss B10 non-champ (UM, OSU, PSU, Minn, Wisc, NU) 22. 2-loss P12 non-champ (uw) 23. 2-loss ACC non-champ (Clemson, Louisville, WF, VT, UNC) 24. 2-loss B12 non-champ (WV, BU)
Kesley, well obviously you used the extra hour last night well. Thanks for the stats and analysis. Very interesting.
Well, I was busy all day yesterday so I didn't get to see other games. Alabama and LSU played awesome defense. Again, Hurts made some great runs but he also threw an interception and fumbled one away. He hit a very good long pass but he was barely at 50%. He is a freshman with a lot of potential but it is still potential. I felt Alabama should have run the football more but the LSU defense was very good. A very good win for us and now we move on. Mississippi State is next.
