Alabama just added a 3 Star qb that was going to Arkansas State. This sounds like Saban knows somebody is going to transfer.
I just read an article about SEC players that are not eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame. One of the requirements is that the player has to have been selected as a first team All-American. There are a lot of pretty good players. Y.A. Tittle, Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, George Blanda, Eli Manning to name a few. I never realized this. https://www.al.com/expo/erry-2018/0...ars_wholl_never_be_in.html#incart_river_index
Joe Montana is not eligible for the College HOF for the reason kp stated. I see that Kyler Murray was selected #9 overall in the MLB draft, his slot is worth about 4.5 million dollars. Lincoln Riley is certain that Kyler will be at OU this fall to play QB. There have not been a lot of college football players of note who were also highly ranked baseball players. I can think of Drew Henson and Jeff Samardzija come to mind, I know Jeff signed with the Cubs and played in the minors before coming back to play in the fall of 2006. I think Henson signed with the Yankees and came back and played his last year as well, don't remember if he played summer ball before his last season with UM. I seem to remember some Stanford QB's who also were drafted highly, Kurt Gibson was an AA WR at Mich State, don't remember if he signed and then played another year or what though. I would think that Oakland would have already made the deal with Kyler before they drafted him, it would be silly to waste a high pick like that and not know if they will sign or have talked about football.
There's actually a few every year. One of the things about great 2 sport athletes is the fact that they are great 2 sport athletes often sweetens the deal they get offered out of high school and they sign for more money.
With Vince Young being on the ballot for the College Football HOF for the first time a lot of people on Texas boards are digging up old footage of Vince at his best. I liked this one a lot! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/h4r2iA3R1uM?rel=0" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"></iframe>
New redshirt rules coming this season: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...dium=newsletter&utm_campaign=college-football
I think it's a great rule. I know there are times when a kid who shouldn't have to play as a freshman is forced to play a game or 2 because of injuries and it blows a whole year. There have been instances where late in the season or a bowl game that a hard decision has to be made to play kid or preserve a year. So this gives them the opportunity to get on the field and play a little and still have the 4 full years left. The freshman who arrive ready to play usually play special teams and work their way into the rotation at their position as the season goes on but there are kids who aren't ready to play early, then due to hard work and again maybe injuries are ready to play in the last few games...these are the kids who will benefit. I also like the rule that says when a kid leaves the program that he can go where he wants to go. I know some will say it's not fair if he goes to a team on the schedule the next year and in theory can provide inside information to the new team that could help them. But I don't believe that is true, not with all the film that teams have on their opponents. Let'em go and play.
I agree. The possibility that one transfer player can convey enough knowledge to hurt his former team, especially a year later, is a bunch of hooey.
I think the temptation to maybe poach players will increase, so hopefully the tampering penalties will be enforced.
We certainly don't want to create free agency in college sports, esp football. It'll kill football. As far as poaching players go, I do think that is something that we have to worry about, but I also think that the school shouldn't have control over him after he has announced that he wants to transfer. I do think we need to keep in place the rule requiring players to sit out a year, except for graduate transfers. I also agree with Saban that players sometimes just don't have the patience to let things develop and make hasty decisions to leave.
Update on the recruiting wars. As usual Alabama is at the top of the heap with recruiting. These are the 247 Composite Rankings. 1. Alabama 2. Texas A&M 3. OU 4. Notre Dame 5. Clemson 6. Georgia 7. South Carolina 8. Ohio State 9. Miami 10. Oregon 11. Texas This is pretty fluid and since the rankings are based on a formula that rewards you for the #of kids as well as the quality of the kids. This can change a lot Right now Alabama has 15 kids, but Ohio State only has 11 if nothing changes for Alabama by July 1 and Ohio State adds 4 kids they'd likely move up to #1 or close. Texas A&M has the most in the top 10 with 18 kids, so as other teams add players to catch them in numbers they likely will drop in the rankings.
Terry, Urban seems to be playing it close to the vest for the moment. As always it's hurry up, wait and see.
You can always count on Coach Mike Leach for some good comments! He's also in some Twitter war with a guy I've never heard of name Wolken over one of his tweets. From what I can tell he's kicking the guys ass.
The Aggies picked up a transfer from AJ's Huskers. Les Miles boy will be plowing the row in College Station. Who woulda thought the Ags would use a fullback, and the Bugeaters wouldn't??? Miles to A&M
Alabama just keeps raising the bar with regards to facilities. I wonder if even NFL teams can keep up? https://mobile.twitter.com/AlabamaFTBL/status/1011765971047124992
July is a dead period for recruiting, and there have been changes of course in the rankings since I last posted them. Alabama is still #1 though. Michigan has jumped up quite a bit and Texas A&M has held on to the #2. Again these are some formula that favors teams with more recruits, but teams like Ohio State who have fewer players but higher quality still are doing well. UGA is down a ways out of the top 10 but they only have 10 guys but they have the most 5 star players (3) and the rest are 4 star players. I expect when Dec rolls around that they will again be in the top 5. Teams like So.Carolina and Texas have dropped mainly because of the forumla. For example Miss State is ranked ahead of So. Carolina but they both have 16 players, So.Carolina has a 5 star player, but 2 fewer 4 star players...they are close but I would have thought the 5 star player for So.Carolina would trump what MSU has....anyway this won't be the same rankings as we'll see Sept 1 either. 1. Alabama 2. Texas A&M 3. Michigan 4. LSU 5. OU 6. ND 7. Oregon 8. Ohio State 9. Clemson 10. FSU https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Football/CompositeTeamRankings/
