I'm not sure about what went on at Indiana, I know it didn't end well for him on Bloomington but he was a VERY valuable resource to Day in Columbus and his departure was a big loss for us. I've always thought him one of the best offensive minds in the game, very very underappreciated. Love to have him back....
BT, Honestly, my comment was kinda flip because I can't recall exactly what happened at IU, and I truthfully didn't feel anything toward him good or bad. I knew only only that there was a cloud when he left. Your post jogged my feeble memory enough to remember how effective he was at Ohio State, so whatever happened at IU likely was a blip in his career. As the kids say, my bad.
Sid, you're right there def was a cloud and he was damaged goods for a time. I hope it is only a blip, he was a huge resource to Day - the OC's OC so to speak and his experience were invaluable in the transition after Meyer left. We def missed his hand on the rudder last year
"BREAKING Boston College will reportedly hire Bill O’Brien as its next head coach." Looks like a done deal....who's next? I've heard Chip Kelly's name mentioned often...he and Day have alot of history together. That would be interesting, not sure he'd be my first choice, but interesting for sure Bill O’Brien Leaving Ohio State to Become Boston College’s Head Coach
This certainly has never happened in major college football, a HC at a Power 4 program bailing to become a OC at another Power 4 program in the same conference. I'm struggling to figure out why Day would want Chip Kelly.
They have alot of history and they're very close. Kelly was Day's QB coach at New Hampshire. Day was on Kelly's staff as QB coach with the Niners and the Eagles during Kelly's tenure. Says to me Day is more comfortable with a grizzled old vet in the booth as OC - he's been missing Kevin Wilson for a year and he has said he's finally giving up playcalling duties and I think he's more comfortable with an experienced guy that he knows well. I'm pretty sure you're still gonna see Day's offense on the field
Well that certainly did not take long, like BTerry, I am not sure of my feelings at this juncture, but its a done deal, so wait and see. Full steam ahead for spring practice.
Agree. Add to that a likely meat grinder Big10 schedule vs. the relatively "manageable" Pac12 schedules. Too bad JO'Co isn't here to take issue with me (possibly). Man, I miss that guy. Corey? Thoughts?
Probably the first time a head coach quit his job to become an assistant coach at a different school in the same conference.
Yeah that's very odd, it seems like just yesterday I saw an article that claimed he said he was not going to the NFL (Seattle). He's reportedly taking Scott Huff your OL coach who like Grubb probably never unpacked his bags. So much for loyalty to DeBoer, staying together and getting something done in Alabama. I wonder if it was the money, they loved Seattle and really would rather be there than Tuscaloosa, or tired of NIL/recruiting.
"Kelly signed a two-year contract extension in March. He made $6.1 million this past season. He would have been due $8.5 million as part of the buyout of his contract had UCLA fired him." I agree that the buzzards had to have been circling, but why would a guy willingly pass up an $8.5 Mill payday? Hell, why not let the buzzards bite and pocket the big check? Worst case, he has a miserable year, puts up with all kinds of BS and burns a year on his payout so only collects $4-5 million when he gets kicked to the curb. In essence the guy paid UCLA several $milly$ just to walk away and have the opportunity to say F@#% you.
There could be one more item... no offense to Corey, but maybe Chip was tired of all the California BS he won't have to deal with in Ohio? And it's a good situation for him there if things go as planned. I technically took a step back level wise to take the job I have now, but it pays more and I have a pretty secure path to my retirement date. It was a no brainer for me, and could be that Kelly is also looking ahead and liking OSU's offerings better than UCLA.
I read that UCLA is going to enforce the 1.5M penalty for leaving early, but he's made a lot of money so it's probably not a problem for him or maybe his buddy Day has already taken care of that item. Spring Practice at UCLA is a month away and the AD has said he'll have a new coach in 4 days. So no nationwide search for the best guy. Just a willing guy!
