Don't know if this has already been discussed but Justin Fields just informed NFL teams that he has epilepsy.
That's terrible, it can be treated with medication and apparently he has been dealing with it during his football career so far.
Wow. Well it seems like it hasn't stopped him yet, but that is a big bomb to drop during the physical...
A new study by the NCAA regarding concussions has made for changes in fall camps. Here are some of the changes: 9 padless practices during a 25 practice camp. That’s up from 2 padless practices. 2 scrimmages allowed rather than 3 1⁄2 under the current model. Complete abolishment of collision drills such as the Oklahoma drill. A formal vote on the proposed changes is scheduled for May. Its adoption is expected.
This past weekend was a big one for Spring Games. A lot of the top teams have QB battles going on and it doesn't seem like many were settled in the Spring. Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&M all came out of the Spring with no decision on who will be the starter in the fall. Alabama seems committed to Bryce Young and Clemson seems committed to the young QB who I can't pronounce or spell his name but who started and did well when Trevor Lawrence was out with Covid. Georgia is set with J.T. Daniel, and I think the Gators are set with young backup to Kyle Trask, Emory Jones. The Irish haven't named Jack Coan the starter but most expect him to be the starter at FSU to open the season. I suppose that it could be if there is a "battle" at QB it might be smart to delay naming someone till Fall Camp. If you declare a guy the starter and the guy who was competing with him isn't thrilled, with the new rules he could transfer in the summer and now you have no depth at QB.
Speaking of Spring Games...my nephew Ben Harris who is a walk on QB at OU got into the Spring Game and was 6 of 6 for 40 yds. Only thing that bothers me is that he's already learned that horns down sign that those guys do to irritate Texas. f
The Aggie spring game was kinda boring. With a bunch of guys on the sidelines with little nicks and bruises, it was hard to get much more than a first look at some new faces. The QBs are definitely a work in progress. The two front runners had good and bad moments, as expected, especially when behind a new OL facing a veteran DL. Jimbo had them throw a LOT, rather than run the RB's we already know about. So it was fun to see them let it fly... but with several WR's and both TE's on the sidelines... it was not exactly a precision attack. We haven't had a season where the offense was this new in quite a while, so it should be fun to see how it goes.
New rules for 2021, biggest one I guess is the change in the OT rule forcing teams to go for 2nd OT instead of the 3rd. Other changes approved include permanently extending sideline team areas to the 20-yard lines rather than the 25, and including video board and lighting system operators among those prohibited from creating distractions that obstruct play. Penalizing taunting will be a point of emphasis for officials during the 2021 season. Coaches who leave the team areas and enter the field to debate officiating calls will receive unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. The playing rules oversight panel also supported a rules committee proposal that would allow schools or leagues to request postgame reviews about feigning injuries. That one about reviewing feigning injuries should be fun and more than a little controversial or embarrassing if a team actually gets nailed and can't prove their case.
Just as Texas basketball has been active in the Portal, so has Sark. He just picked up some players, LB Ben Davis from Alabama, another LB from New Mexico State who had a great first season and decided to see if he could move up, and he did. Also a highly ranked WR (Xavier Worthy) from Michigan who signed a LOI and decided UM wasn't for him and asked to released and was given the release. It's also being reported he's still working the waiver wire..err Portal to add to the Roster.
CFP...the committee is looking at other options for the playoff, but aren't going to change anything right now.
Nice pick up for Sparty but the young man who is leaving Tennessee will need to learn how to spell Michigan correctly
odd timing, Ole Miss/Lane Kiffin just fired their OL coach. Said it was for football reasons not any off the field issues. There was a time that a lot of coaches were either let go or left for better jobs but hung on till after national signing day so kids who they recruited couldn't back out at the last minute. But now that recruiting is pretty much over in Dec, I have to wonder why it took Kiffin so long to decide that this guy wasn't cutting it. Bringing in a new OL coach after Spring Drills seems a bad move if it can be avoided. Now those kids instead of learning and working with a new OL coach in the Spring won't get on the field with him till the fall.
