Terry, I agree. I know I sound doom and gloom but I fear we are watching the slow demise of the college football game that I have loved all of my life.
I agree kp, I know many see the old model that we worked under as grossly unfair to the kids, they make millions for the Universities and all they get in return is room/board and tuition plus a recently added small stipend. Of course now we are seeing that all those millions the Universities earn off of football are crucial to funding the other sports. Also I'd like to point out that in modern college football these kids not only get the room/board/tuition and a stipend. They also get access to world class training facilities, to strength and conditioning coaches, to all sorts of nutritional counseling and training tables where they can eat like kings. All of this helps those who have NFL potential to increase and hone that potential. I'd sure rather play 3 or 4 years of college ball where I'm around kids my own age, where there is a social life. Than play minor league baseball where most of the players make very little money, travel all the time, social life for a 18-19-20 year old in Class A or AA ball, doubt if it's as good as a kid at college. It's not like I think no changes should be made. Lots of the rules were just stupid rules, clean them up and simplify them sure. We'll of course have just wait and see. I don't think any of Harbaugh's suggestions are going to fly in the short term. NCAA has it's hands full just figuring out the Name,Image,Likeness deal for the players. I forgot about one of his suggestions, that is you get 5 years. Not 4 years playing in 5 years. The new rule about being able to play 4 games and still take a red shirt was a good thing, but I'd be for just saying 5 years if you want it.
I hope not Kp, but my optimism is on shaky ground. Like you, I have always loved college football ever since I was a youngster. Never played football in that our high school was too small to field a team.
Aren't Socialism/Communism a good thing? That's what a majority of my professors at the universities I attended argued, and I would bet that viewpoint hasn't changed at university campuses since. Think of this practice as putting into practice what a majority of the school employs preach. See how fair that is?? All those other sports NEED that football funding. Just because the football teams "earn" it doesn't mean they have a right to it. See how that works? Don't forget the value of exposure from broadcasting their games, showing their highlights, "evaluating" their talents, keeping them in the news cycle. In addition to all the tangible benefits they have always had, the TV model provides a very lucrative platform on which to display their talents, to which they would otherwise not have access.
Well this is a bit of a shocker. Tua's brother Taulia has entered the Transfer Portal. So it's Mac Jones or true freshman Bryce Young for the Tide.
Terry, Paul Tyson is still at Alabama, but you are correct it looks like it will probably be Jones, at least at the beginning of the season. It's interesting that with no spring practice, Tagavolua has apparently decided to throw in the towel at Alabama. I wonder what prompted this now?
Of course I have no idea why Taulia threw in the towel, but if he ends up at Miami then you'd have to think the family wanted to move to be close to Tua.
Not college football related, but I see that Phillip Rivers has taken a job as the Head Coach at a Catholic High School in Fairhope Alabama, St. Michael's. It's effective when he retires from the NFL, he's not committed to a retirement date though, just signed with the Colts. It's pretty new school, opened in 2016. Out of curiosity I looked it up and on google maps you can see the school, and talk about being out in the middle of nowhere. It's farms all around the school, I mean plowed fields! It's a nice looking facility though. According to it's website it is a member of the AHSSA, which surprised me a bit. Here in Texas private schools are not allowed in the State Assn. There are 2 (Dallas Jesuit and Strake Jesuit) But it took a lot of political wrangling for those 2 schools to be admitted.
Back to College Football. I see that NCAA Pres Mark Emmert can't see fall sports unless students are back on campus. Along that line, James Franklin (Penn State) said the other day that not all conference teams need to be ready to play, said if a couple of teams couldn't go in the fall, that the ones who were ready to go should play with out those schools. That is he's fine if only 10 of 14 Big 10 teams were available to play the season without those 4. Actually makes sense to me. Emmert expects no sports without students back
Well if you follow recruiting very much, you might have heard of 5 star RB Zach Evans from Texas. He had disciplinary problems in HS, coach benched him for the state championship game..unheard off. He seemed to be a head case. He signed with UGA, who then released him from his NLI. Since then he's been reported to be headed to a number of teams, including Alabama, Fla, Texas and Texas A&M But nothing every developed. I think Scott said he didn't want the kid at A&M . Head case. So he's finally got a school. He's going to TCU, he's their first 5 star ever. Probably got down to, all the big boys didn't want to take a chance on him, even though he's very talented. As I said, he appears to be a head case. Good luck to TCU with him.
Pac12 talking about conference only schedule of 11 games. The Cal State University system is talking about staying in the virtual mode with some exceptions, like nursing and programs needing access to labs. They say it's up in the air whether they will have athletics at all in 2020.
I guess there was a Pac 12 conference all amongst coaches. One of the topics was a uniform start to the season. Most of the Pac12 coaches want the NCAA to mandate the start date and give them 6 weeks from the start date before games are played. Seems fair to me.
Here's how desperate we are for football news! Urban Meyer's son who goes to Cincinnati and plays baseball, has decided to walk on to the football team because he want's to go into coaching after his college days are over. So that's front page news on USAToday Sports section!!! Nate Meyer: Urban Meyer's son joins Cincinnati Bearcats as walk-on WR
SEC is going to vote next week on whether or not they will open their Athletic Facilities June 1. Players could access them on a voluntary basis. Lincoln Riley had criticism of that move. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley says college football must be 'patient'
I certainly can not disagrees with what he is saying. No easy answer when everyone is impatient including the fans!
