I'd have to agree with you on that Don, you can build a good program with non-elite kids through excellent coaching and development that's for sure. But it's no surprise that teams who have the most talent headed for the NFL and an elite level college QB are going to be the teams making the CFP.
All those high draft picks sort of points out what I have said in the past about Florida playing a tough schedule in the SEC..... like going on the road to play at LSU this past season. That's a hard nut to crack..... and it helps to season a team for adversity on the road and for playing elite teams wherever. LSU was more than ready for Oklahoma and Clemson after having to win it's way past Fla, Aub, Alabama and Georgia.
32 players drafted attended HS in Texas, the most by far. CA was second with 23. Texas had 7 first rounders, also easily the most.
Coach told us we were broke, he told us the cupboards were empty. He told us it's a process, and to be patient. He understands NU football and what we want/need. Numbers dont lie, and the numbers below indicate one thing....The Trains coming. To be continued... A look at the last few #Huskers OL classes: 2019: 6-9, 301 6-7, 250 6-7, 280 6-7, 280 6-7, 255 2020: 6-6, 270 6-6, 275 2021 (so far): 6-9, 282 6-8, 330 6-6, 310 Talk about an influx of big, physical athletes.
The consequences of no football, and ergo greatly diminished or zero football revenue beyond maybe what apparel/Caps/etc they can sell to fans, is enormous. Just think also the impact on the local economies that had their biggest financial gains on football weekends. A spring season? No fans? What will college football look like in 2020?
A lot of talk now about the one time immediate eligibility rule. There is supposed to be a vote in May on this, but the NCAA Board wants to defer any changes. I read an article on The Athletic and the coaches aren't really excited about this, going to make managing their rosters hard. Also there is a lot of talk about the impending changes to the rules regarding players right to make money on their image and likeness. More than a few (me included) think it's going to end up being a cesspool.
I agree, Terry...it's going to be a mess. Recruiting will now be about endorsement advantages; Ohio State football will prosper more than any program with athletes making endorsement money And for some athletes, it will enable them to earn some $ that they otherwise would never make as a pro; Braxton Miller is the perfect example of a Buckeye who deserved endorsement money: Doug Lesmerises
I'm really conflicted. I love college sports because of the emotion on one hand and on the other hand it is a travesty that the NCAA and the colleges make so much money on the names of the players and they get nothing. Also, players' movements are restricted but the coaches have no such restrictions. The sad fact is that by giving the players equality, the games that I love may be ruined for me. This is much like free agency in the pros.
I wonder how much money Johnny Football would have made after that monster season he had as a RS freshman. He tried to make some on the sly and got busted for it. If it'd been legal he'd have likely made a ton of money on endorsements. College Station/Bryan isn't Columbus, but A&M fans and alumni wouldn't have been shy about opening the wallets.
Big 10 has extended the ban on team activities and all on and off campus recruiting to June 1st. As I've said before I'm not at all hopeful that the season will start on time, I think at best there will end up being a reduced season, maybe only a conference schedule. Which I don't know where that would leave Notre Dame. All of our opponents of course are members of a conference. I guess our contract with the ACC could preserve those games (5). We just don't know. Big Ten moves ban on team activities to June 1
An interesting proposal from Coach Harbaugh at Michigan, Harbaugh advocates rule changes for NFL draft I think he has a valid point. Any thoughts after reading the above link?
I know this will be a big disappointment for Scott! My personal opinion is that I can't see this happening for a long time unless there is a bowl matchup or CFP matchup. It certainly isn't ever coming back to the Thanksgiving Weekend now that Scott has the Kitties to look forward to on Thanksgiving Weekend. Article on ESPN says both Texas AD Chris Del Conte and A&M AD who I can't remember who he is, said there isn't anything in the works for Texas and Texas A&M to play again in the future. ADs: No movement in Texas-A&M series resuming
Don, Personally there is not much that I like about those suggestions from Harbaugh. I esp don't like that kids can go to the NFL at any time, it would create another 1 and done situation some what similar to basketball. The idea of kids being able to come back to college if they don't get drafted is a little more palatable to me, but I'd rather not do it. I think right now the kids get an evaluation of some sorts and can make a decision based on that as to whether they go or not. I'd be ok I guess if his suggestion about being able to hire an agent and not losing their eligibility would be ok. I know all of these new (potential) rules are being talked about to benefit the kids. But I worry about the overall effect they are going to have on the whole game. We've got the NLI rules coming soon, and again it'll help some but not all of the kids, I think it's going to cause some problems when you have a few kids on the team making some big money and most making little or nothing. Kids already sometimes get upset over playing time, throw in not playing like they think they should maybe hurting their pocketbook and what happens then?
