So the UC Board of Regents has approved the move of UCLA to the Big 10, with conditions. The devil is in the details. As part of the board's decision, UCLA will have to increase its expected investment in student-athlete resources and might have to provide a subsidy to the University of California, Berkeley in the range of $2 million to $10 million once a Pac-12 media deal is secured, depending on the amount of the deal. A UC spokesperson said the $2-$10 million subsidy to UC Berkeley would be an annual payment. The board included other conditions for UCLA to address the impact of the move on athletes, including funds for academic support, nutritional support and mental health services. According to the letter to the regents, the subsidy to UC Berkeley would be to "enhance student-athlete support on that campus." "Berkeley really took a hit by UCLA leaving," Leib said. "They suffered quite a bit. We don't know how much, but we felt it was important ... that we somehow make Berkeley, maybe not whole, but at least help them in that situation."

Oops! Sorry about that. Normally I notice it, but this time I spaced. The premise of the article is that Ryan was born in LA to 16 year old parents who could have (along with their child) become a statistic. Instead, the parents moved away from the city. A couple of years later, the family moved to Boulder, CO, where dad had a FB scholarship, Dad later to law school today is a corporate VP at Microsoft. His first "football" injury came as a toddler from Eric Bienemy, his dad's teammate at Colorado. Bienemy was babysitting him and play-tackled him into a coffee table, which resulted in stitches. For his 10th birthday party, he invited his dad's friends, who were only 26 and also were his friends. Ryan's and his wife's first child, a girl, was stillborn, a tragedy which, needless to say, was tough to get through. These are a few of the highlights. Hopefully, the story will have legs and show up in another publication which isn't subscriber-only.

Bowl games used to be a reward for players and fans. They were a test of your team against the best team from another conference or section of the country that you normally would not play. Now, with the exception of the NC game, it is none of that. It's a glorified scrimmage with a makeshift lineup against another team in a similar situation. In ND's current matchup, they really can't lose. If they beat South Carolina they can crow about beating an SEC team to wrap up a strange season. If they lose they can say that they did not have the services of their starting QB, and their All American TE and DE so it was just too much to overcome.
I've thought that maybe coaches should only take players who will be able to return for the next year to the game. Leave graduating seniors/those out of eligibility at home. Then the training camp leading up to the bowl game would be just the guys coming back, if they've been backups they move into starting roles and the game is like an early spring game. Get ready for 2023.
Honestly, I know it sounds spoiled but if Alabama isn't playing in the playoffs then I am much more interested in the extra practice time and giving next season's players some experience. It's almost like an additional spring practice. Finishing outside of the top 4 in the final poll just doesn't mean much. I hope the players don't feel like I do.
That's really all bowls are now. As said above with all the players opting out or transferring all you have is a scrimmage that might be a glimpse of your team next season.
