Longhorns get to the tournament via the play in game vs Xavier. 14 SEC Teams, what a year for the SEC
New IU head coach is Darian DeVries, 49 years old, this season HC at West Virginia after 6 seasons HC at Drake. Excellent record overall. I like the choice.
Alabama State defeats Saint Francis at the buzzer. Too bad both teams could not have won. Both squads pretty evenly matched.
Purdue freshman C.J. Cox is a very special young man. Smart with multiple Ivy League offers yet only one high major offer, Purdue. In HS, endured the loss of his mother to cancer. The Indy Star article is paywalled and quite long, so I'm not posting the link, but here's an excerpt which shows the kinds of connections that coaches use to get information on recruits: Note: Not sure if he's a scholarship player, but Brady Cox is on the Notre Dame roster.
Perdue got a break (overseeded?) but we have been a top 4 seed for 8 straight seasons. Next up are Arizona and Tennessee with 4 seasons. Bama and Houston have 3.
Well the Longhorns went down to Xavier tonight, it will be interesting to see what happens to Rodney Terry. I'm betting he'll be let go, nice man but average coach. Texas AD see's the Longhorns men's program as something that should be as good at the women's program. Top 10. Money and facilites are there for a great program and there is a lot of basketball talent in the state of Texas.
down goes 5 seed Clemson to McNeese. Coach Will Wade will be leaving to go to NC State after the tournament. I had Clemson winning easily, they had a good season in the ACC and a good roster. Beat Duke. Seems like there is always a 5-12 upset.
What a great win for Drake, they have 4 transfers from Div II and they beat a good Mizzu team. They were good at everything except free throw shooting. They were horrible, while Missouri was hitting 90%. It almost cost them the game.
FWIW, the top 7 SEC teams went 7-0 so far while the bottom 7 (including my Longhorns) went 1-6. Not sure who those teams prevented from getting in the tourney but 6 of those bottom 7 were under .500 in conference play. Maybe we need a rule like football where you can't get a bowl bid unless you are at least .500, of course in football it's an overall rule, so even those bottom 7 were all over .500 when you include non-conference. Likely nothing will be done, or maybe nothing should be done. Somebody has to lose, right?
Down goes St. Johns, which according to ESPN was the most popular Final Four pick in their contest outside of the top 4 seeds, also 4% of their fantasy brackets had the Johnnies winning it all. Stu's Boilermakers had a solid win and are off the sweet 16.
Bobda's Michigan were down at half to A&M, but they came on strong in the 2nd half and ended up with a 12 point win. How did Michigan get so good so fast? They were the worst team in the Big 10 last year? Dusty May must be a heck of a coach. How did Roddy Gayle get away from the Buckeyes?
