Down goes Alabama and Houston is on life support. Looking like no #1 seed will make it to the Elite 8. I wonder when the last time a Final Four or an Elite 8 for that matter did not have a #1 Seed.
Stick a fork in Houston, they are done. Great season and a very talented team but Miami was a bad match up for them. Dreams crushed. Miami on the other hand has both men's and women's teams through to the Sweet 16.
Last time a #1 seed didn't win the Nat'l Title was way back when Georgetown was beaten by Villanova in 1985
San Diego's tenacious defense sort of upset the Tide's offense in the beginning and they really never completely recovered. The officials had a nightmare on their hands trying to officiate that game.
Lot of time to play of course but the Longhorns got out of the gate fast vs Xavier. Doing it iwith out Disu who was their leading scorer in their last game.
I think it's the Longhorns night, they lead 42-25 at half after hitting a half court shot at the buzzer. Longhorn defense has harassed X into a terrible shooting night. Unless we spit the bit in the 2nd half we should be on to the Elite 8. While it wouldn't be appropriate to announce Rodney Terry is losing the interim and will be the new HC of the Longhorns, making the Elite 8 has to cement him as that guy
A brief thread jacking. The NCAA regionals in hockey started this weekend. While the B10 quickly washed out of the basketball tournament, the first games of the hockey tournament reveal the B10 to be the Godzilla conference in hockey. Minnesota 9 Cannisus 2 Ohio State 8 Harvard 1 Penn State 8 Mich Tech 0 Michigan 11 Colgate 1 In contrast to bb, smaller schools in hockey such as Denver, Minn-Duluth, No. Dakota have traditionally been quite competitive if not better than larger state universities.
I was pleasantly surprised by the scores as well Bobda, at least the conference is off to a great start conference wise.
Several Nat'l Championships have been won by smaller Eastern schools. It's been since 2007 that a Big10 school won, Mich State, in the years since Providence, Union, UMass, BU have won along with the Denvers, UMD's and N.Dakota. Boston College is the only Power 5 team to win in those years since 2007. I figured Canadian Hockey players preferred small schools. The one thing I don't understand is why Wisconsin isn't better, HS hockey is big in Wisconsin so there should be some home grown kids to fill in with the Canadians. But Penn State has only recently started playing Hockey and they have built a good program klnd of quickly.
This narrative on the Maryland Women's team is a common thread in basketball to day, players entering the portal even though they were starting and coaches going out and getting a bunch of players into the Portal and building a good team from them. I don't really like it myself but it's what we have and it's not going away. A year ago, she was dealing with the loss of her father, Bill, and the prospect of having to remake her entire roster. Four starters entered the transfer portal after the season ended with a Sweet 16 loss. Frese got to work, using the transfer portal to her advantage. Frese added nine players to her roster this year, including five transfers. All of them averaged more than 9 points at their previous schools. The result has been a team that has not only found an identity, but a competitiveness that has elevated them over the course of the season -- one that has helped rewrite narratives about a program with more than its fair share of NCAA tournament heartbreak.
FAU to the Final 4, we all had that one right? Watched the end of the Va.Tech/Tenn game and it was a very exciting finish. VaTech is going to the Elite 8, of the ACC Teams left in the tourney I really hope that Va.Tech goes all the way, I like Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amore along with their coach Kenny Brooks. Personally I have the exact opposite feelings about Louisville their coach and their star Haley Van Lith.
