Aggies beat the Irish last night 73-67. Don't know anything other than what I see in the box score. Irish had a 10 point lead at half and then the Aggies came out and crushed us in the 2nd half. Brey only played 7 players last niight while Buzz played 12 players!!! 9 of them had double digit minutes. I'd have to say the Irish must have been dog tired at the end, Aggies out shot us by a lot almost 50% to 39%. We are in trouble if Brey only has 7 players he trusts to play. I wonder if we were having flu problems?
From what I've seen so far the Aggies live and die by outside shooting or run outs - not much paint scoring. Get hot and they have a chance. Had a 20 minute dry spell against Wisconsin that ended any hope in that game. I didnt get to watch the game last night, but assume they were hitting this time.
From the highlights it looks like Terry might be right... the Irish seemed to slow down in the 2nd half, not breaking presses as easily as they did in the first. Shooting was the real story. Irish shoot 33% overall and only 23% from 3pt land, while the Aggies shot a whopping 48% overall with 45% from behind the stripe. You don't lose many when you hit at that rate.
Sorry I didn't watch it, but Duke took down Gonzaga in Las Vegas in from what I read an epic game before the largest crowd in Nevada basketball history in Nevada.
ACC/Big 10 Challenge is up. Irish get Illinois tonight as their B10 opponent. Catch a little break with Illinois being without some of their players. Hopefully, Prentis Hubb will start playing basketball instead of throwing up bricks/airballs and turnovers. Irish need to have a good finish to 2021, right now they seem to be struggling more than a little with a lot of things. I hope Brey stretches that bench a little so we don't have an iron 7 playing and getting worn down in the 2nd half. I hope the freshman Wesley continues to develop he's has a lot of potential.
I watched some of Purdue/FSU 1. Purdue is really good this year 2. FSU has a player who looks to be 7' 129lbs...stick man!
Ironically Bobda the last two losses to Michigan, we have upset Duke both times on the following Tuesday after the big game.
From what I've read the crowd was electric in Columbus and given some credit for intimidating Duke in the last 5 minutes when they went cold. There was a big crowd at Purdue as well, the announcers said the Purdue Student Section is one of the best in the nation.
Keeping my fingers crossed. This is the most positive I've felt about a Purdue team...maybe ever. Hope we can keep it up without too many hiccups (they always seem to happen) and no injuries (thinking of all the injuries to Robbie Hummel that derailed a couple of great Purdue teams). Purdue's NCAA Tourney record isn't that hot...I've blamed it on all sorts of excuses...injuries...bad seeding (always seemed to get somebody's "home" game" in the tourney) and my belief that we get to the tourney by Matt Painter getting the max out of his players throughout the season and not taking any games "off" (then running into teams playing at their "max" in the tourney). This year now has huge expectations. It seems as if the talent and depth are there. I really admire Trevion Williams. The kid was All Big 10 last year and has fully accepted (embraced even) his role coming off the bench this year (though he still plays a huge role and remains the glue of this team.) I love watching him cheer Zach Edy on. Oh...and Thank You Buckeyes!
Stu I'm just amazed at how good of a player that Niele Ivey's son Jaden has become. He was a good HS player for the small Catholic school he played at in South Bend, but I don't think anybody was thinking he'd develop into what he has become at Purdue. There were questions as to why Brey didn't pursue him for the Irish but no answers, it just never happened.
Ah I miss having a decent bb team. Hoping this year we've built up enough to sneak back into the tourney. So far I see a glimmer of hope. BTW, how old is Coach K? I remember him at Duke back when I was in high school!!!
I do think in Buzz Williams you guys have a really good coach and that he'll build the program to NCAA tourney level. He's done that everywhere he's been, Marquette and Va.Tech. Plus I do think Buzz is one of the good guys. Coach K is 74, 1 year younger than me!
He's awsome...the ESPN guy said Purdue's like Noah's Ark...two of everything. Two point guards, two power forwards, two shooting guards, two big centers...oh, and then you add Jaden Ivey. When you think about it there are a lot of kids who don't go to their parent's schools. In Purdue terms I think of Brian Griese and Gary Harris (son of Joy Holmes Harris). It's gotta be tough following in Mom or Dad's footsteps.
The Purdue commentator also said the team is like a clown car. You open the doors and they keep coming out. I thought that was funny.
