1987, Scott! That would have been your Jr year, right? Aggies under Shelby Metcalf, lose 9 out of their last 11 games, got on a roll in the SWC tournament and ran the table beating Baylor in the title game. That's the last time that they played in a conference title game. Got the auto bid and were 1 and done losing to Duke in the first round.
What a run by VaTech to the ACC Championship! Close at the half and just like last night vs UNC, they ran Duke out of the building in the 2nd half. The Duke team started 5 NBA players, maybe all of them in the 1st round. VaTech none. That's what is different about basketball, that much difference in future pro talent in football is a blow out for the future pro's.
Correct Terry, I remember it well... watched that game by myself in my parent's living room. We really only had one legit player on that team, and he sure wasn't enough to beat Duke.
The Aggies came up short against the Vols but it was a great run to end the season. Now we wait to see if we're in or not. I think so but nothing is ever a lock without the auto bid ...
You had a great tournament run Scott. Be proud of your Aggies! They played some good basketball, Tennessee played some very good basketball as well.
I know I've been overly optimistic over the years re: Notre Dame sports, but this time I really whiffed. I was confident ND would be solidly in the tournament based on their ACC regular season record. Shows what little I know about the relative strength of teams. They're playing in vs. Rutgers, which IMO will mean we'll be eliminated in our first game. I've seen Rutgers play twice. We're not a match for them. The TV guys said our strength of schedule was a negative. Oh well.
Iowa and VaTech two teams that got hot at the right time. Iowa had a good season tied for 4th in the BIG. Scored 112 on Northwestern. Same for VaTech who got hot after the New Year ran through the tournament just like Iowa. Both needed buzzer beating 3 point shots to keep going in the Tournament.
I see that Georgia has poached Mike White from the Gators. From what I am seeing, Gator fans are saying Thank you Georgia! I'll be curious to see what Bill says.
Thanks Bob. All I can say is it sure looks like the conference tourneys don't matter to the committee...
Here's a link. Georgia hires Mike White: Bulldogs poach next men's basketball coach from SEC rival Gators As to what I think. I believe White did the right thing as his support at Florida has steadily eroded and he has almost no support from the fans. I think he may well be successful at Georgia. I don't know who we may hire, Rick Pinto's name came up but he's 70 and I don't think that would be a good move. I also think that he would not have survived more that a year or two at Florida without some real improvement. Overall mixed emotions.
Sadly, I agree. Re: the field. Some surprises, but overall, I can't argue with the bids or the rankings. IU is like Texas A&M. I thought both had played their way into the tournament. One didn't get a bid. One is in a play-in game. After my confidence buster re: ND, I think I'm the odds-on favorite to finish last.
Not sure if this link will work or not. It might be an insider article on GatorCountry. Someone let me know if it works. Thanks. Mike White accepts Georgia job | GatorCountry.com
So how do you feel about White leaving for Georgia? As I said earlier I get the sense that Gator fans aren't sad to see him go.
