Don this reminds me a little of the Chris Mack move to Louisville. Mack like Cronin grew up in Cincy and went to Xavier, was Sean Miller's assistant, seemingly a Xavier lifer. His wife is from Louisville though so they at least have some connection, and I'm sure he doubled his salary from what Xavier is willing to pay.
Well Chris Beard, Texas Tech, got paid. He signed a big time extension that will make him one of the top 5 coaches in terms of salary. about 4.5M, only Cal, K, and Rick Barnes will make more. He's got a big poison pill of 6M if he leaves for another B12 school...cough, cough, Texas. Many Texas fans are hoping that he'll be the replacement for Shaka Smart, he is a UT grad.
Sources: Michigan's Beilein to coach Cavaliers This is stunning. Did a great job in AA taking M to the NCAA finals twice and a long string of making it to the Sweet 16. He is 66 so his tenure at Cleveland will probably not be a long one but his style of offense will mesh well with the NBA, young players will improve from his coaching, and a big NBA contract sure will help the retirement nest egg. Big loss for M's BB program. Wish him the best but very sad to see him leave.
Bobda, I wish him well but very surprised to see him leave the Michigan program. Maybe he thought he had accomplished all he could and chose to move on?
I'm shocked to see that he left Michigan. At his age it's hard to believe that he feels he needs NBA success to validate his career. I have to assume that there is a financial side to this, he probably got a contract that ensures a nice retirement for him and his wife. Also tough timing for Michigan as everybody seems settled in for the 2019-2020 season, but it's a good job and somebody might just ditch their team to move to AA, leaving some other team in the lurch. Who are UM fans talking about as being on their short list?
Article on The Athletic says UM will make Billy Donovan, Jay Wright and Brad Stevens say no before going to plan B.
This may prove to be an intriguing search for Beilein's replacement. After reading several articles in the Detroit Free Press, I kept hearing the word Evolution, and I think his reason for leaving was to keep moving forward and upward and not simply because of money, but for the love of the game itself.
It will be interesting to watch, he's been successful at every level from HS through Div III, DivII and DivI now the NBA. The Cavs or the Knicks are likely to end up with the #1 pick aka Zion Williamson, if it's Cleveland we'll see what he can do with him. If not then who will the Cavs take at #2? How big a rebuilding job is Cleveland?
Hard to say, Terry...long way to go but some of the pieces of the puzzle are there. Hate to use injuries as an excuse but the Cavs were devastated by injuries all season long last year. Kevin Love out all year, Tristan Thompson and Larry Nance Junior in and out with injuries...Colin Sexton will, I think, be a good one...really showed improvement in his rookie year. Cedi Osmond and David Nwaba still learning as is big man Zizic...Nick Stauskas and Jordan Clarckson are guys I can root for. And now we will have a high draft pick...maybe even #1...we'll find out tonight.
TOK, Out of those names, I suspect only Billy Donovan is a possibility since he might have had his fill of dealing with Westbrook. Think it unlikely that Wright or Stephens would leave their present jobs Lavarr Jordan of Butler was a former Bielein assistant and probably is a likely target. Marshall of Wichita State is someone who might be tempted to switch jobs.
Juwan Howard? Is he a serious candidate? No college coaching experience, no HC experience, been and asst for the Miami Heat since he retired. He is connected back to the glory days of the Fab 5, was he ever implicated in the stuff that went on around them? I think Webber was, but not sure about Howard.
Vegas odds on the next UM basketball coach. Juwan Howard — 3/1 Billy Donovan — 7/2 Bobby Hurley — 5/1 Mike White — 5/1 Kevin Keatts — 7/1 Shaka Smart — 7/1 LaVall Jordan — 10/1 Luke Yaklich — 10/1 Saddi Washington — 10/1 Brad Stevens — 12/1 Please let it be Shaka Smart!
T, He is interviewing with the Timberwolves now but suspect he is a serious candidate. He did get his M degree and seems to be well regarded in the NBA. He was not implicated in the Ed Martin scandal to the degree Weber was but news articles were written that indicate that he was a beneficiary in some manner of Martin's largesse. His hiring would be quite similar to Georgetown's hiring of Ewing, an experiment that has not worked well so far, or Hardaway at Memphis who sems to be doing well. It would be a pretty big gamble if they hired him given his lack of HC experience.
