Bobby Petrino back at Louisville? He's a slime ball who's happens to be an excellent coach. I'm a little surprised that the Louisville AD wanted him back, in his first run there he was job shopping the whole time. I'm sure they are willing to forget the incident at Arkansas, Petrino probably convinced him he's found the lord and is a new man, but the same coach.
Al Borges is out at Michigan. He had such a great start at UM, and came with Hoke from San Diego State where his last offense was excellent. I remember after the 2011 season thinking that the feeling was that Hoke had assembled a super staff (with Mattison at DCoord) at UM and Borges would remake UM into the old UM offense with big strong armed QB's under center and a solid running game. But last two years haven't been good for him. I did think that their freshman QB looked like he had a lot of potential and maybe he'd be that guy who Borges could finally run his offense with. But he won't get that chance.
Terry, Agreed. I think that's weird. Borges was playing with RBs at QB. Now they finally have a kid who appears to be a perfect fit for what Borges wants to do, and they let him go? Hoke can't be under that kind of pressure at Michigan, can he? (paging, Bobda) As for Petrino, well, that seems like a panic move to me. Whether or not Petrino is going to win is not a question. He's going to win and win a lot. They are moving to the ACC, they lost Teddy B and their HC, and I think the AD feared falling off too far in rebuilding. That's all speculative, but I'd be shocked if that's not the case.
I see Hoke and Muschamp as being in similar circumstances. Both of their in-state rivals achieved great success while UM and UF seem off track. Next season could be the last for both.
Alabama OCoord Nussmier left the staff for the Michigan job. That does seem like somewhat of an odd move, I'm sure Mich can pay him a pretty penny but I would also think he was making a ton of money at Alabama as well. Plus at Alabama he's running an offense that brings in top 5 talent every year. Michigan recruiting is excellent most of the time, but right now nobody can touch Alabama. So I'm not quite understanding why the move, esp given that Hoke is bound to be at least on a warm seat. If he's looking to improve his resume for a HC position, I'd have thought that staying at Alabama would be even better. kp what are you hearing as to why he left Alabama?
First are we sure the move was all his idea? Second, if you don't really like your boss and you can make more money elsewhere, do you have to stay because of talent?
Maybe Saban wasn't the easiest guy to work under that's for sure. I think even kp didn't like the play calling in the Iron Bowl or the Sugar Bowl. Not enough run calls. But as far as staying for talent, I would think it's more of staying for stability. Now certainly he, Hoke and Mattison could have Michigan clicking on all cyclinders and it'll be a great move. But what if they have another year like this year. Is it possible that after 2014 he'll be looking for another job?
Is Saban really going to interview Lane Kiffin for the OCoord job? I mean why bring that snake into your team and what the heck has he ever done to attract Saban to him? He is an snake oil salesman as a recruiter for sure, but it's not like Alabama needed help recruiting, they have the #1 class for 2014, and have been probably the top team in recruiting since Saban got there.
Ohio State and MSU are going to be tough ones again next year.... it won't be an easy ride for the Wolverines. Hey if Nick Saban is really thinking about LK as his OC then I don't feel so bad about that idea dancing around in my head for Muschamp's selection a few weeks ago.
Tom Herman the current Ohio State OCoord and QB Coach is reportedly leaving the Buckeyes for Texas and the same job.
Terry, I have not seen anything reported here in writing. I would hate to lose him, good coach and recruiter. Rumors have persisted he might be leaving soon, but for a head coaching job?
Corey, I do not think Hoke is on the hot seat but it is a warm one. Re Borges, this link from the Free Press provides a good summary of the general criticisms made against him: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2014301080171 My major complaint about Borges is similar to the ones made by ND fans at Weiss-the lack of any consistency in his offensive schemes. Like Charlie, our offense seems to change from week to week flipping from run oriented to pass oriented to a cornucopia of grab bag plays. But, in his defense, the talent pool that Borges worked with was depleted as a result of poor recruiting and attrition attributable to Carr's sub standard recruiting during his final years and poor recruiting classes under Rich Rod. During Carr's best years, it seemed as if Michigan had as much talent on its roster as any team in the nation. Now, perhaps only one or two players at most, could have started at Alabama. Also, as TOK and you have pointed out, neither Denard or Gardner were the type of QB that had success on past Borges teams. The new hire is interesting given that Saban had asked Kiffen several weeks ago to analyze Alabama's offense. Makes one wonder if our new OC knew that his job status at Alabama was in jeopardy.

Don my record here speaks for itself!! Saban to Texas! Lloyd Carr to retire several times due to health problems...don't know how that guy is still alive!
Terry, I had not heard anything about Nussmeier leaving. I hope it was because of playcalling. Now I do not want Kiffin either. I think he will end up being a recruiting violation nightmare. Our playcalling seemed to be based on what someone wanted to do, not on what the defense was giving us. There has to be someone out there better than Kiffin. Hell, hire Borges. :?
