No doubt a reward for a job well done, and at the same time making it much harder for him to leave for the NFL if they came calling. There is risk of course in giving a coach a big raise/contract after 1 really good year, I think of the OCoord who took over for Butch Davis at Miami and took them to the Nat'l Championship in his first year...Larry Coker. That was the high point, it was all down hill after that, he ended up coaching at UTSA in San Antonio and got fired there as well. Of course then there is ND extending and giving Charlie Weis a big raise after 4 games to keep him from leaving for the NFL. I doubt if that happens to Day though.
