While there is a lot of talk about the next ND coach and Marcus Freeman our DCoord is the name most talked about, Luke Fickel because he's still coaching a CFP team won't even acknowledge that ND has a job opening, and I don't blame him. Beat Houston is his #1 priority.

But I haven't heard much if anything about the OU job.

And recruiting! He will be going up against some very energetic recruiters!

Yes and he's a coach that during his tenure at ND has not shown the same passion for recruiting that Saban, Jimbo, Smart, etc have shown. He's tolerated staff that were dead weights on recruiting and he himself was not dynamic. It only got better this year when he hired a dynamic guy in Marcus Freeman.

I did find an article about the OU job speculation.

    1. Mark Stoops....just signed an extension at Kentucky
    2. Matt Campbell ...he's everybody's candidate.
    3. Bob Stoops ...really?
    4. Josh Heupel ...just started at Tenn, had a pretty good first year to boot. Can't believe he'd leave.
    5. Brent Venables ...top of the line DCoord, but like Bud Foster and Mickey Andrews has never really had a sniff at good power 5 job. Has to be a reason.
    6. Lane Kiffin ...bet 2 years ago he'd have crawled over broken glass to get this job. Not that Ole Miss is a better job, but he seems to be a good fit there.
    7. Jay Norvell ...the Nevada coach, not sure what he's done to be the next OU coach
    8. Alex Grinch ...already left with Riley for USC, of course all bets are off if he's offered the HC job.

Breaking down top candidates to replace Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma

Well he sure can no longer recruit on his word, can he. He has a well defined pattern established. I will say this, that is probably the first time football players at LSU have ever heard student and athlete used in the same sentence.

I’m not interested in hearing anything Brian Kelly says now and forever.

    Terry,
You probably have but if you haven't, look on the Mike Frank's Board on ISD the premium one and see what the current and future players are saying. They all want Freeman! Hell, if he stumbles around for a year or so it's not a big deal to me cause meanwhile he'll still be pulling in great recruits all along and he'll be fine then. It's a no brainer to me. Hire the man!!! Why would we wait for Fickell when you can have the guys who is the main reason Cincy is where there are right now??? FREEMAN!

    Tim,

It's probably going to be Freeman, and I can get behind that choice. I just wish we'd been able to snag a HC with a track record like Riley or Kelly. But then that is not a guarantee. I'm sure the Gators thought that when they got Mullen, and that Texas thought that when they snagged Tom Herman out from under LSU. Too many other examples to put them all here. That same guy, Lincoln Riley, had no HC experience and came to OU from East Freakn' Carolina, then 2 years later he's the HC at one of the Bluebloods of College Football.

So we'll see. I do know that he'll jump feet first into the fire and he won't fail for lack of trying or energy.

Listening to Kelly's comments I'm pretty sure that he feels that there wasn't a sufficient commitment to winning a championship by ND's administration. Maybe he's right, they hired him didn't they?

I'm sure that Freeman's agent is having a good time working Swarbrick. Jack is stuck between the agent and Fr. Jenkins. I don't envy him. I'm sure that the attitude is that paying multi-millions helps label the school a football factory. How much do you pay someone with no track record as a head coach? If being liked was the most important quality, I doubt Lombardi or Belichick would have ever been hired. Can the other coaches get along with MF? Does he want his own staff including OC? The last coordinator that we hired was Charlie, do we want to go down that road again?

Charlie is no Marcus Freeman. Charlie was never any kind of college player or coach.

Kelly didn't get off his butt and recruit. Freeman has already shown you what he will do recruiting.

Everything is changing in college football and a lot of it I don't like but the thinking a new HC at ND or any other big school has to have previous HC is no longer true and it's been proven elsewhere.

Rees is staying as well. We'll certainly have a young coaching staff! I do think these guys will inject some fire into the program.

The criticism of the the recruiting effort under Kelly is over, Freeman won't tolerate guys not getting out there and working their butts off.

I really think this is the correct hire. The players and recruits really like him and there is no denying that he is a dynamic defensive coach. I’m glad Rees is staying as well.
