Notes from a Zoom Call with former UT Football Players... - when asked about players opting out, Sark replied, “let’s call it what it is - quitting.” - spent some time discussing the importance of all three phases of the game. Feels like Texas has to win on offense, defense and special teams. - relayed that he felt like former Texas QB Major Applewhite, who was an analyst at Alabama this year, would spend at least one season as offensive coordinator at South Alabama. - said he has to develop players once they get to campus but that process actually starts by explaining to those same players that star ratings and rankings no longer matter at the college level. Each player starts fresh when they get to college. - went on to explain that his feeling are that teams need to try to be one unit, not a collection of individuals.
Back in 2007 Harbaugh as the new Coach at Stanford had this to say...it stirred a firestorm for sure. The latest controversy started when Harbaugh, who was hired from the University of San Diego in December, told the San Francisco Examiner in May that Michigan lowers its admissions standards for football players and advises them to take easy classes. Harbaugh made his comments in defense of his new employer. “College football needs Stanford,” Harbaugh told the Examiner. “We’re looking not for student-athletes, but scholar-athletes. No other school can carry this banner. The Ivy League schools don’t have enough weight. Other schools which have good academic reputations have ways to get borderline athletes in and keep them in.” A week later, Harbaugh told the Ann Arbor (Mich.) News, “I would use myself as an example. I came in there, wanted to be a history major, and I was told early on in my freshman year that I shouldn’t be, that it takes too much time, too much reading, that I shouldn’t be a history major and play football.” Speaking at the Big Ten Conference kickoff Wednesday, Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr said of Harbaugh’s comments, “Do I think they’re elitist? Yeah. Arrogant? Yes. Self-serving? Yes.” Harbaugh’s remarks not only touched a nerve with the current Michigan team, but also with at least one of Harbaugh’s former teammates. Jamie Morris, a tailback during the Harbaugh years, told the Detroit News that the comments have ended his friendship with the quarterback who was named the Big Ten’s player of the year in 1986 and was 21-3-1 in his final two seasons with the Wolverines. When the two last spoke, Morris said he asked Harbaugh, “Do you really believe the comments you said, or are you saying them to make you look good? He said, `I believe them.’ “
One thing I will say about Harbaugh is that he's never been afraid to speak his mind, whether at Stanford or at Michigan. I've never cared for him as a player or as a coach, but it's not because he wasn't a great player in college or the Pros and he's certainly had his successes as a coach as well. He's just always rubbed me the wrong way.
Hart returning to Michigan was not a big surprise since he bleeds blue and the Carr era players and Carr welcomed H back into the fold after H was hired. But, H is still on the hot seat and Hart certainly left a more stable job situation to return to AA.
I think you have a good point Scott. I lost respect for Meyer because of the way he left Florida, the shape our program was in when he left and just how quick he took another job at Ohio State. However as the old saying goes time heals wounds. I hope he does well at Jacksonville.
Tide Rb coach, Charles Huff, is leaving for HC job at Marshall. Who is left in Tuscaloosa besides Saban? I don't know if I have ever seen a winning program lose so many coaches
No surprise that teams hire from winning programs, but this is ridiculous! Certainly gives O'Brien the opportunity to build his own group
I was at the Stanford v ND game in South Bend and Harbaugh was the coach and Jimmy Clausen was the Irish QB. ND led the whole game but Stanford almost came back to win at the end. Clausen approached him at midfield to shake hands . When he extended his hand Harbaugh left him hanging. Haven't liked him since. Its been so long since I watched an NFL game I can't name a single Jacksonville player. I wish Meyer luck though; it looks like jy dream of him coaching at ND will go unfulfilled! Maybe Saban retires? He is already the most successful coach in college football history; if he can win it all again with a totally new coaching staff they will put him on Mount Olympus.
As expected Ravens LB coach, Mike McDonald, has taken the Mich DCoord position. He's been with the Ravens 7 years, so I imagine he must have been given a great recommendation by Harbaugh's brother. Ravens have traditionally played great physical defense.
A&M lb coach Tyler Santucci. might be the next DCoord at Vanderbilt. He Clark Lea and Elko were all together at Notre Dame.. Lance Taylor, ND Rb coach who is an Alabama grad and started his career as a Grad Assistant for Saban in his first year at Alabama, thought to be a candidate for same position on Saban's new offensive staff
Ron English hired as DB coach at Purdue. I kind of liked him when he was at Michigan. Pretty intense, always coaching up the kids. GoldandBlack - Purdue hires Ron English as DB coach
Stu what are the rumblings in W.Lafayette about a DCoord? Is ND Coach Mike Elston still a consideration?
I really don’t know, Terry. There was a guy who grumbled that we hired a DB coach before the D coordinator.
Jeremey Pruitt reportedly will be fired today at Tenn over recruiting violations. Fulmer reportedly set to retire as the Vols AD as well.
