    For Immediate Release

Weis will not be retained as Notre Dame football coach

University of Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis will not be retained, University director of athletics Jack Swarbrick announced today (Nov. 30).

“We have great expectations for our football program, and we have not been able to meet those expectations,” Swarbrick said. “As an alumnus, Charlie understands those goals and expectations better than most, and he’s as disappointed as anyone that we have not achieved the desired results.”

Swarbrick recommended the dismissal Sunday night to Notre Dame’s president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.

“We have established an evaluation process for all of our athletic programs that, in the end, results in a recommendation from Jack to me,” Father Jenkins said. “I accepted Jack’s decision and look forward to working with him on selecting a new head football coach who is the very best choice possible for the University and especially for our student-athletes.

“I am most appreciative to Coach Weis for his service to Notre Dame and our community. He and his family have my prayers and best wishes.”

Weis spent five seasons as Irish head coach from 2005-09, with his teams achieving consecutive records of 9-3 (Fiesta Bowl appearance) in ’05, 10-3 (Sugar Bowl appearance), 3-9, 7-6 (Hawai’i Bowl victory) and 6-6 in ’09 – for an overall 35-27 mark.

Swarbrick announced that Rob Ianello, the Irish assistant head coach/offense, wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, will assume responsibility for football operations until a new coach is hired. Ianello has spent the past five seasons on the Notre Dame staff and previously was part of football staffs at Wisconsin (1990-93, 2003-04), Arizona (1994-2002) and Alabama (1987-89).

    TOK,

Harbaugh's comments pissed of Martin but he is leaving. While many Michigan fans noses got bent out of joint, I'm sure if Michigan has another season or two like the last two years, the administration and fan base will be more than willing to let bygones be bygones.

    Corey,

Harbaugh's comments actually concerned his days in Ann Arbor as he maintained that he was discouraged from taking an academically challenging major. I suspect he was telling the truth. There is a good book written last year by Mike Rosenberg, the Detroit Free Press writer who broke the present story about excessive practice time, called War As They Knew It. The book chronicles the Hayes-Bo rivalry against the backdrop of the cultural changes going on at that time. While Bo is portrayed in the book as more likeable than Hayes to his players and as scrupulously honest, the book contains passages which show that Bo was probably more concerned with graduation rates rather than the quality of the education his players received. In contrast, Hayes, through dictatorial and, at times, brutal, is presented in the book as a person of intellectual depth who challenged his players to compete both as students and athletics and was sincerely devoted to their future well being. While, as a ND fan, a book about Bo and Woody may not jump out at you as worth reading, this one quite good. If Buckeye Terry is reading this, have someone put this in your Christmas stocking as I think you will enjoy how fairly this book sets forth not only Woody's flaws but also his more numerous virtues. Re Harbuagh. After he graduated, he played for the Bears where he was ostracized and publicly mocked by Jim McMannon because McMannon's buddy's was the second string QB. H also served the role as one of Ditka's favorite whipping boys for a while. I don't recall him bitching about his treatment; he took his lumps quietly and avoided lashing back in the press. The **** he endured in Chicago probably hardened him. I also think some of Ditka's persona ( i.e. not only do I want to beat you but I want to rub your nose in it) has been incorporated into Harbaugh's coaching persona.

Tim, I hope you have the ear of your AD.

<r>One positive point right now is that is seems the majority of the verbal commits have stated they still remain strongly committed to ND despite the coaching change. Hopefully ND can hang onto all of them and the new coach will be able to finish off the class strong. <E>:)</E></r>

Two names that have been foremest in my mind but have not appeared publicly as candidates are Greg Schiano and Randy Edsall, especially Edsall. Both have taken their programs from obscurity - in Schiano's case, the bottom rung of D-1 fooball - and brought them to a very high level of respectability within and even above their so-called competitive range. We saw the result of Edsall's work a couple of weeks ago, both offensively and especially defensively in the second half. Rutgers had a relatively down year last year but has rebounded nicely this year. Neither program attracts marquee players, but both coaches have proven that they can do more with less, talent-wise. Connecticut was very impressive in terms of refusing to give up after we opened up an big lead, and they fought hard to earn the win. It's been well-documented that Schiano recruits well in Florida, and Edsall is considered a solid defensive coach, whose offenses have done very well. Both coaches have coached players into the NFL, a la Ray Rice and Donald Brown. Both coaches appear to be outstanding motivators, which is a key ingredient sorely lacking in the past 3 ND head coaches. Also - Somebody help me here - wasn't Schiano seriously considered for the Alabama job before they hired Saban? Did he turn down an offer or simply announce that he wasn't a candidate?

I'm sure the vocal fringe wants bigger names, which is irrelevant, and I have no idea where the AD is looking, but I would hope he would look hard at these two guys. Of the two, I would prefer Edsall, but either one would be an excellent hire IMO.

It's being reported on other websites that Brian Kelly was interviewed on eSPn this AM and said that he is staying at UC, looks forward to continuing to build that program and his family loves Cincy.

Our buddy Jif emailed me after the UConn game to say that the Irish should be looking at Edsall for their next coach. I can tell you that if either Schiano or Edsall are the next coach the intial reaction of online fans is not going to be warm and welcoming. It will be viewed as the result of another flawed process. Already there are those who are saying that Swarbrick and Jenkins are still rooted in the 60's and 70's and won't give any concessions to the top coaches that they ask for..ie loosening up on academics and assistant coaches salaries.

Somebody posted a timeline for the last 3 hires, of course Davie was hired very quickly, as was O'Leary, after O'Leary became O'Liar then it was after whatever bowl game Stanford was in before Willingham was annonced. Weis was hired by Dec 13. So I wouldn't expect this to take longer.

Whoever the new coach is whether or not he's a homerun or a double the fans will get behind him and ultimately he'll either win enough to satisfy everybody or we'll be looking for another coach in 3 to 5 years.

Gary Patterson of TCU is out, he just signed a big new contract with TCU and he'd be the biggest jerk in world if after what he's said he jumps his brand new contract for any school.

Are you counting that as consecutive time since Lou?, or the recruiting breaks every 5 years?

    Tim,

AJ is saying, in essence, that we have been without a head coach since Lou. Am I right, AJ?

<t>Well as much as I want Brian Kelly as the next ND HC, he's is going to have to eat a lot of his words if he does come to ND cause right now he is putting it in very definite terms that he is not leaving Cincy.</t>

Schiano was offerred by Michigan, Sid, but turned it down. I also think Miami went after him before hiring Shannon.

Rutgers, when I watched them, seems extremely well coached. He would be a good fit at ND.

Timmy, you are breaking out in a flop sweat. Relax...............
