Thanks Corey, so conference champions get automatic bids (10), then a selection committee selects at-large bids (14) and then some conference champions get 1st round byes (8 of the 10 get automatic bids, I guess the committee picks who gets the byes), then the rest of the tournament participants are paired based on geography for the first 2 rounds except that conference champions don't meet in those first 2 rounds. It does work well but I can hear the arguments now. Which conference champs get the 1st round byes? What is "geographical proximity"? Except for the fact that 24 teams are involved there still seems to be a lot of subjectivity, and committee decisions but I'm game and the present bowl system would be gutted. 8)
The question has never been can it be done, it's do we want to do it. As I said the bowls have put tons of $$ into college football coffers and local communities seem to like having them for various reasons. Expanded playoff would mean dumping all the bowls for the most part. I'm sure something could be worked out to have part of the playoffs be at neutral sites and include stadiums that used to hold bowls. But the early rounds would have to be at campus sites if you want anybody to show up to the games. We've had a good FCS team in Sam Houston State and they've made it pretty far in a lot of years. Always end up though playing an important game in a freakin' blizzard in Wyoming or Montana or the Dakotas. Another thing I'd like to see is to eliminate all teams who are not FBS teams from all schedules of FBS schools. Maybe even eliminate 1 game, and everybody start the season Labor Day weekend and finish the season a week early. Then with a 16 team playoff, we don't need 24, you could have the Conf Champ games the last weekend in Nov, and the 1st round games the 1st weekend in Dec. Then break for finals and you'd be down to 8 teams. Play the quarters the last weekend of Dec (Dec 30th this year) and then the Semi's the 1st weekend of Jan, and the Final the 2nd weekend. That would fit the academic calendar really well.
the bowls line the pockets of those putting on the bowls. The colleges sometimes break even on the deal, sometimes they lose money. KP, The regional aspect would upset some people to be sure. You'd have some 'Clemson vs Georgia' type games while others fuss that USC is playing Boise State, but it works and it's a lot of fun.
Corey, I think everyone would just have other things to bitch about. The "committee" still makes most of the decisions. The only objective decision is the 10 conference championships. Everything else is up to the committee. I don't think we need 24 slots and we definitely don't need 10 conference champions. 8)
Ya know...why aren't we pulling for the only 2 undefeated teams left?...no matter if UCF wins Sat...the powers that be wont put them in...so I'm BADGER fan the rest of the way. You with me Bobda?
USC vs Stanford about to start, got the popcorn going in the microwave and reaching for a Rio Blanco Pale Ale from Real Ale Brewing Company in Blanco Texas...it's real good folks!
Lol... There is no citrus used in the brewing process Ralph so you might not like it! SC so far is clearly the better team.
Good drive by the Trees... 17-14 and they get the ball to start the 3rd qtr. SC really has a speed advantage and Darnold is really good at extending plays and making something happen.
Trees go for it at the 1yd line... Maybe they should have noticed USC was bringing an extra guy with speed off the edge and blowing up the play they did it on the previous 2 plays
That decision to go for it instead of kicking the FG maybe cost Stanford the game.. They now have to go for the onside kick. It's been a great game though.
this was a hard game for me, I'd like to see both teams lose so all I can do is hope for a good game and someone to make a stupid mistake that costs them the title. I got all I wished for outta this one
There's a reason 99 times out of 100 other coaches would have kicked the field goal....with that much time left you take the points, tie the game and hope you get a stop and get the ball back.
