Here's an interesting idea to ponder.

So how do Power 5 conferences have conference champions?

Also.... you can forget that with 4 playoff games you would ever see a smaller school like UCF survive to the Final because of lack of depth.

Injuries may be a part of the game but these smaller schools just don't have the talent to keep up with the "next man up" mantra of the major powers.

I think 16 is too many.

MCG, UCF didn’t get a chance at all. Their supposed lack of depth is just part of the game.

Well it would be strange to have a Conference but no conference champion in football.

All I know is that Auburn hammered both Alabama and Georgia this year and was handled fairly neatly by Central Florida.

If I were UCF I would have a parade too.

    Terry,

We're currently running that risk with Alabama this year. They didn't even win their division and are one game away from winning it all. This is my problem of the influence of the old guard and their BCS mindset still having a heavy hand in the playoffs. They were drug kicking and screaming into this, and they would still only try this with a 4 team format.

To me, it's just ridiculous. The Nick Saban's of the world are always going to bitch about the format regardless citing player safety, but the other divisions manage to pull this off without a hitch. Lord knows we have enough downtime during the post-season.

Well in any playoff format, you certainly have every chance that the eventual Nat'l Champion will not be a conference champion. The only way to avoid that is to exclude any team that is not a conference champion.

But, I was referring to not even playing a Conf Champ Game. It's fine if you have a round robin schedule like the B12 has, but the rest of the conferences are too big to do that so Conf Champ game makes a lot of sense.

Well you know me, I was always a fan of the Pac10 and their true round robin but that was deemed to be insufficient because they didn't have a title game. They were forced to expand.

UCF played in a conference championship game this year, did they not?

Well said.... Unless you only invite conference champions then you damn well bet that an at large team that is good enough to be invited is good enough to win it .

You can have all the 16 team playoffs you want but I guarantee you those lower seeded non-major schools are not going to survive to the Final with all of those playoff motivated Power 5 defenses looking to tear their Qb in half.

Well, it's gameday. These two teams are cut from the same mold and it makes it very hard to predict. If the Alabama defense shows up like they did against Clemson then I think Alabama wins. If Georgia can establish a running game Alabama is in trouble. I don't think our offense can win this one, it has to be our defense. If it is a high scoring game we are in trouble, 21-10 Alabama! 8)

Guy whose daughter goes to Ga. Tech posted this...

My daughter at GT received this from the Engineering department last night.

"GTENS ALERT: All classes cancelled tomorrow. Due to the expected onslaught of SEC fan drivers, it is not safe to be on the roads. Beware of middle aged, shirtless, beer bellied men barking at you, and of southern bells in houndstooth garb screaming at a tv expecting something to happen because of it. Above all if you hear a roll tide, or even worse, a go dawgs, take shelter immediately. It is not safe to be a Helluva Engineer."

School was actually closed due to weather.

    That's pretty cute.

I think the winner of this one is the team whose offense can overcome the other team's defense.

I'm still trying to figure out how a team that didn't win it's conference, win it's division and wasn't even the best team in its own state is playing tonight for the national championship!

I don't have any problem figuring that out. To me at least Alabama was clearly one of the best 4 teams in college football, that is the current criteria. Who are the 4 best teams.

There he is ..The Donald! I knew he was coming to the game but I thought he would stay holed up in a luxury suite way up high. But there he was right down on the field for the anthem, in the middle of the troops.

Bama is there because they dispatched the defending national champion playoff participant Clemson.

I met a Gator fan today all decked out in Gator gear and I asked him who he was rooting for. He said with a straight face that he was rooting for the asteroid that would come down and hit the stadium tonight..LoL
