He might understand that 8-3 is not a great season in Ohio, but he can be 8-3 and win the B10 Championship, Defeat Michigan and it's a different kind of down season than the same for the Irish....in actuality I'd submit that would not be considered a down season at all in Columbus.
Good thought Terry and as a fan of a team that can win the SEC and go to a BCS bowl as conference champion I can agree that if OSU did the same in the Big 10 but did not compete for the NC that not too many Buckeye fans would be jumping off the building in dismay.
Agree, for any BCS conference team, winning the Conf Championship, beating your biggest rival and getting the automatic BCS Bid would not necessarily be a down season even with 3 or even 4 losses. It wouldn't be a great season, that means losing 1 or at the most 2 games and competing for the Nat'l Championship till the end.
"It wouldn't be a great season, that means losing 1 or at the most 2 games and competing for the Nat'l Championship till the end" Agreed.....
We'd be happy to be conference champs. We'd be thrilled to beat TUN. We'd be decidedly unhappy at losing 3 games and there would be a lynch mob gathering to string up the coach. Who remembers Earle Bruce? His nickname was "9 and 3 Earle". He won conference championships. He had a winning record against TUN. He was an alum, an assistant to Woody and a dyed in the wool Buckeye. He got fired.....because he was "9 and 3".
http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/bigten/ohio_state/coaching_records.php Woody..... .761 winning percentage Bruce....... .755 Big 10 champions or co-Champions: Woody: 10 of 28 seasons Bruce: 4 of 9 seasons Yeah...I can see the Buckeyes sunk to a whole new low under Earle Bruce...
If Meyer is dumb enough to trade Gainesville for Columbus for less money then I guess we'll have to let him go...... 8)
I can't see Jim Tressel going anyplace either so there is not likely to be a job opening for 10 years or more in Columbus.
Oh yeah? Lose to Michigan a couple years in a row or don't make a BCS bowl then check back with me. 8)
I guess anything is possible, but so far McSweatervest has not shown any inclination to underachieving. He recruits extremely well, developes players, and is a great big game coach. So it's hard to imagine that he'll decline over the next 10 years. I would imagine his 10 year record will be similar in W-L's to Bob Stoops and Mack Brown.
I think there is a perceived lack of preparation with regard to the job Tressel did against Florida by the fans and some of the media. Granted JT has earned some huge slack because of past big game success and you would think this was just a blip. That said...should similar results occur in the future in some big games and say there are some untimely upsets by teams and coaches like Ron Zook you never know. By the way I think Zook will spoil some Big Ten power's season this year.
I liked the job Earl Bruce was doing, and unlike some of my friends was not at all happy when he was canned. I would beg to differ, however, that he was fired only because of the 9-3 records... There were other issues that were not of his doing, other than he criticized the people who had the power to get rid of him. Jim Tressel has proven that he is a fine coach...I'm sure your opinion of Mr. Meyer will not change when Fla. stinks up a game sometime.
I would not disagree Stu....it was not the only issue, but imho, it was certainly a big one. Had he been known as "12 and 0" Earle, my sense is that he probably would have been somewhat more popular and had vastly more job security! Stu, you know what it's like in Columbus....hell, after delivering 3 national titles in the preceding decade or so, Woody lost 3 games in 1967 and there were "Goodbye Woody" banners flying above the Stadium!
Lack of preparation had nothing to do with the Buckeyes loss to UF. It was a bad matchup and OSU lost their #1 weapon at the start of the game.
A bad match-up it was and there was a little element of surprise for Florida in that OSU did not expect the rush they were getting from the Florida DL and I think the Fla Dbs were much better at coverage than OSU realized going in. The Florida offense on the other hand had started to jell in a big way by the SEC CG and Meyer is a proven big bowl coach who kept that offense clicking for OSU. It all added up to what happened and yes not having Ginn was akin to Florida losing Harvin I'm sure. Sorta like Miami losing McGahee... 8)
