I used the word "everybody" when I shouldn't have.

I don't know where you get that Terry. I happen to think a lot of Mack Brown and a lot of Urban Meyer. Both coaches are a good fit for where they are at.

Whatever flaws they have fit within the boundaries of flaws we all may have. I prefer to judge people in the big picture as to who and what they are and not pick the details like others like to do.

Mack Brown is on my short list of good coaches in about every since of the word.

    Right along with Urban Meyer.

Bill no doubt you and I have different views on discipline, and I was really trying to say I'm OK with Mack and I also don't have a problem with saying I'm disappointed with how he handles some things about the Texas program, in fact to me as a Texas alum it's a little disappointing. I think we could do a better job with discipline without becoming dracoian and a better job with academics without trying to be Notre Dame.

Applying the same principles, if I were a Gator fan I'd still love Urban but I'd be disappointed in how he handles somethings.

But then as I said earlier I think ND goes too far the other direction.

Terry, I doubt our views are as different as you say. What I am for is giving room for people who make mistakes to redeem themselves. When it's bad enough I believe in getting rid of players. I could name several where that has happened at Florida.

I don't agree to throwing people under the bus to satisfy other peoples ideas as to how a situation should be handled.

I think the one time you and I really disagreed was Brandon Spikes. As to how Texas handles situations, I frankly don't pay as much attention as to how others handle their situations and doubt you can find many places where I have commented negatively as to how the other other coaches handle their programs.

    Bill,

I do think we agree more than we disagree. I agree that the Oregon kid was punished too harshly, game suspensions for sure 3 games min, but to immediately suspend him for the season was over the top.

With regards to Spikes, you supported/defended Urban with the 1/2 game suspension, what would you have said if Urban had suspended him for a full game immediately. Would you have said that was too harsh? What would you have said if Urban didn't suspend him at all? It wasn't manditory that Urban suspend him. It was more media pressure.

Merry Christmas...hope you are having a great time with the kids and don't mistake my disagreement as anything other than just conversation. You are one of the fairest minded and forgiving guys I know.

    Terry

Terry, the question you asked me about Spikes probably illustrates some of the reason I get accused of just supporting Meyer. A one game suspension would have been fine by me, a half game suspension was fine by me. I really don't get the big deal about the difference.

I've never been one to think that a specific length of time is the deciding factor. Recognition of a problem and setting guidelines for future behavior is important. The length of time is not always.

I think that I did not look at that situation with Spikes as serious as some of you did and I would not have no matter what team he played for. The Georgia player involved did not, and frankly I think if it had been any team but Florida it may not have come up. Notice I did not condone the behavior, I just said that I didn't take it as serious as some and believe that that type thing goes on a lot n those piles.

I have handled a lot of discipline, effectively I might add, in my working career and believe that in most cases it was not the length of the punishment that did the trick but the getting attention. Many times that was knowing what could happen if the behavior was repeated.

You have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year also Terry.

Terry, let me say that I certainly don't take our difference as anything but conversation and share the same feeling about you and your fair minded approach to issues and discussions.

The problem Corey is that "it" is drinking and driving for Dunlap and "it" for the Bear in your example is selling drugs.

I guess I just don't see those two as being equal especially considering what the tolerance level was for drinking in the Bear's time.

It doesn't matter what the tolerance level was in Bryant's time? What the law is now is all that matters.

I wasn't even commenting on the severity of the Dunlap punishment, I was lamenting the fact that Dunlap's punishment was being used as the reason that Alabama won.

Oh yeah, Coach Bryant benched Joe Namath in the 64 Orange Bowl (I think it was that year) not for DUI but for drinking and missing curfew, but those were differenct times. DUI is taken as a much more serious crime now than it was back then.

Neb vs Aub was the '64 Orange Bowl. Alabama vs Texas was the 65 Orange Bowl (after the '64 season). Joe played in the Texas game.

KP, Alabama won because they were the better team that day, just like Florida won last year because we were the better team that day.

    Merry Christmas

Thanks Bill, but it wasn't you that made the allegation.

Thanks Terry you were right, I had to look it up, it was Namath's junior year, 1964 Sugar Bowl and Namath was suspended for the final regular season game and the Sugar Bowl for breaking curfew.

Hey....I never said Bama wasn't the better team that day.

I am just saying UF played uncharacteristically poor defense and also that I do not think Bama suddenly found an unstoppable offense.....much better say than Oklahoma was last Jan.

    Draw your own conclusions.

    MCG,
I have drawn my own conclusions and I rest my case. As soon as Dunlap fell asleep, I knew you would contend that his loss would be the reason for Florida losing. Hey if it makes you feel better then go with that.

Kp, just to be clear, I do think the whole Dunlap thing was a distraction to the team and they missed him.

However I also think that the Bama team as it came to Atlanta to play was going to beat the Gators that day. I've seen this situation many times in sports. When a team comes with the attitude Bama brought to the game that day and they are a good team then they usually cannot be denied.

Now go win the BCS Championship for the SEC's fourth in a row. If you win I will anxiously waiting to see if you get the same type disclaimers from some of the fans here that the Gators always get when they win.

But make no mistake, Bama won that game and would have won no matter who the Gators put on the field that day.

George, earlier in the topic you said this
I'm curious as to just what was said that led you to say, or conclude, that anyone here doesn't support DUI laws. Perhaps you could support that accusation with a quote from this topic?

Well I guess George doesn't want to answer the question in the post above.

I'll bump it to the top one time to see if he changes his mind. :)
