Terry, to add to the above. If the father was involved then what he did is end up costing his son and himself a lot of money. This is not going to help Newton get drafted by the NFL as high as he might have been.
Bill it's just a damn shame all around. Cam maybe has some character issues all on his if the UF rumours on Academic fraud are true, and if he knowingly was a part of the shakedowns in that he knew about them. But still you have to look at how he was raised, and maybe his dad is the reason he has those character flaws. A damn shame, very talented kid. Whether or not it hurts him in the long run in the NFL is hard to say, but it won't help.
Gator, Wasn't posting a drive by shot...ha I don't know, read some comments and was honestly asking if you think players get paid under the table or not and if you think it happens a lot. Didn't mean it exactly towards you either.
Good take by Mandel: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/stewart_mandel/11/10/cam-newton-mailbag/index.html
Seemed to me you were taking a shot at the SEC, but I'll take your word. I would have to be kind of naive to say it didn't go on knowing about Regge Bush. what I can also say is that if a college is found to be guilty then they should be nailed big time. And I would also add that no matter what Corey says it doesn't go on in the South any more than elsewhere. It's to bad as I love college football and hate it when these kind of issues take the fun out of the game. Thanks for replying.
It has to be so tough for coaches when they have all these pro scouts involved and at practices and so forth. Huge money business, so people will do whatever it takes to make money. I remember reading something about Al McGuire where he said he went to tons of homes and would purposely open the fridge and see nothing in there. So to me it seems like it would take much to persuade a lot of these kids that have grown up with nothing.
Have to agree 77. I'm not sure if that fits Newton or not. I hope this $200,000 doesn't turn out to be true. His dad is a minister and it would be a shame if he was involved in a shakedown. I do understand that the family has turned over all their financial records to the NCAA.
It goes on everywhere, only one culture truly accepts and celebrates it until they are caught. The South is the consummate 7 year old with the hand in the cookie jar.
I saw in another thread that after Texas there were a ton of schools with about the same top 250 recruits. Are they "all" paying the same amount or is it a bidding war? Or do just some schools pay and some schools are just so damned attractive that players turn down money to go to those schools? Darn this is a complicated world.
I wonder what conference has the most NCAA investigations/penalites? I tried to google it but came up with nothing. There was a time that you might have said SWC, not sure who it is right now.
The NCAA website has a database on all major infractions cases.... The data is from 1953 to present, all sports: Big 12 55 major infractions SEC 49 Pac 10 43 ACC 34 Big East 30 Big 10 20 This is one I don't mind coming in last.....
The crazy lesbians at UCLA have single handedly propped up the Pac10. We're awful. Still, the difference is.. who celebrates it. With the notable exception of USC, the 'if you ain't cheatin, you ain't tryin' is not a welcome attitude in the Pac10. It's an ethos in the SEC
I assume they combined the Old Big 8 and the SWC to come up with the B12 number. Given the old SWC + OU probably was enough to keep us on top!!
