Right now there is a reason for the SEC getting the benefit of the doubt. They have won 3 out of the last 4 Nat'l Championships, solidly defeating their opponent. If the B12 had done that or the B10 then they would be the ones getting the benefit of the doubt.
True, but with each new year the old is suppose to be in the past. Yet again, another problem with the BCS.
Corey, your quote in that article did not hold true when Auburn was undefeated, they did not get the benefit of the doubt. Terry's point is valid even if you think that is a problem with the BCS.
In Auburn's situation, there was no benefit of the doubt to be had. As mentioned previously, selectively, this system uses 'previous years considerations'... In the 2 years previous to Auburn's unbeaten run, they got their ass whipped by USC.. the last one coming down on the Plains in which Auburn didn't cross the 50 until well into the 4th quarter. Auburn clearly 'dummied down' their schedule and went unbeaten. Surprise surprise. But they were behind the 8-ball regarding USC and Oklahoma all year long. That unbeaten season really is a favorite to SEC fans. Non-Auburn fans can point to it as 'proof the SEC doesn't always get preferential treatment' and Auburn fans can claim they were cheated out of a NC. Living here in the South, the funniest thing to me is that most Auburn fans still bitch about USC getting into the game.. not Oklahoma. I hear it probably weekly still. It use to be something you'd hear once a day. If you remember, USC annihilated Oklahoma in that title game... We won't know how Auburn would have faired vs the Trojans, although a USC win in that game would have given them the natural hat-trick vs Auburn. Three straight wins in three straight years (one at home, one on the road and one neutral site) But I'm with you though, Auburn should have had a chance... Yet another reason for a playoff.
OK so here is your USC update for all of you who care. (we gotta get a friggin Trojan on this board) This rumor has been coming for a while, but it appears that early enroled/incoming freshman Matt Barkley may well be going nose to nose to win the starting quarterback job for USC In another article, it appears that Pete Carroll confirms this All I know is that Aaron Corps is very, very good and Mitch Mustain played in games last year for the Trojans..even taking the #2 spot for a while. If Barkley is this good, this might suck.
I understand the Auburn fans not being happy about getting in that championship game and for sure understand why they wouldn't want to play USC and would have preferred to play Oklahoma. They may have had a chance against Oklahoma, USC would have beaten them badly. I have to agree though that it is pretty conclusive proof that the SEC does not get preferential treatment! Case closed.
jesushf?*ckkeyrist... i post a sc update to talk football and it gets ignored to talk about the 1 time the sec allegedly didn't get the benefit of the doubt..although there was no doubt to be had... anyone ele? anyone? anyone who might think it is interesting that a true freshman may be winning the job at usc?
Not really, Matt Barkley was one of those HS QB's who you expect to Challenge for a starting job as soon as he steps on campus. I'd be suprised if he actually does start the first game, but that he's pushing Corp and Mustain ...nope.
Hey whoever the USC QB is they will be an awesome team. If Pete Carroll does start a freshman he will likely have the guy for three years instead of losing them right away to the NFL. More power to him. Other than that the only thing I find interesting is the guy who transferred from Arkansas would probably have been better off staying there.
Hmm I guess I am the only one surprised then. Corp is a kid with a big arm, but he runs well. He's a good natural scrambler and the USC defense has been bitching about him in practice for 2 years now. I can't imagine that offense with a bonafide pass/run threat at QB...
