It did happen once and it resulted in a split National Championship when LSU beat Oklahoma and S. Cal won their bowl game. LSU got the BCS vote but the AP voted for S. Cal. As I recall it was the computer polls that did S. Cal in that year and there has since been a lot of talk about needing to at least win your Conference to be in the game. Excluding an independent of course.
that was a different year Bill <t>the year I am speaking of, Nebraska played Miami for all the marbles in the Rose Bowl.

Oregon, the team that should have been there, was sent packing to prove themselves against Big12 champ Colorado, while the big12 division runner-up got to play for the NC.. you know the whole 'body of work' thing.

The argument against Oregon that year was that 'real national title contenders don't lose to Stanford especially at home.' (they lost btw, 49-42 in what may be the game that made Tyrone Willingham's entire career)

(sound familiar yet).

The end result was that Oregon beat the ever loving BEJEEZUS out of Colorado in a game that was no where near as close as the 38-16 final would indicate.. Colorado had been scoring tons of points down the stretch, Oregon's defense just stuffed the hell out of them till it was all over and the backups were in.

Oh yeah, Miami also had an easy time with Nebraska and the fact that Miami dispenses of Nebraska so easily was just seen as 'proof that the system worked' since Miami would have most likely just pounded anyone put out there.. *yawn*

...and you guys wonder why a few of us Pac10 fans hate this sytem?</t>
