And I thought that Ark. played Fla. in the SEC Championship game last year. Well that tells me a lot about the SEC. Just how great is the SEC if it only takes an "average" team to win one of it's divisions?

I feel the need to repeat as well.....from the article by CFN:

"To feed the ego a little more, the league has gone 7-1 in the BCS since 2001, with two national titles, and the lone blemish was Georgia’s 38-35 upset loss to West Virginia in the 2006 Sugar Bowl. In that same time span, the Big Ten went 4-6 (with Ohio State winning three of those), the Big 12 went 3-6, and the ACC was 0-6."

Ohio State saves the Big Ten from complete embarassment.

The rest of the league owes the Bucks.

Gipper....come on....I think Florida just may have been a tad stronger last season than they were when playing Iowa in Zook's second year....don't ya think?

Same goes for Arkansas last year vs. when playing Minn in the music City Bowl.

Teams vary in strength year to year.....( the obvious )

...in light of the facts put forth by MCG regarding the Big 10's record -v- all conferences in BCS bowls and it's record -v- the SEC in all bowls, the only thing I have to say is....."Thank God for the SEC". It would seem to indicate that the conference record is better -v- SEC than the other conferences. Interesting if true and would seem to put more dirt on the SEC is superior coffin.....

Gip, as it relates to Arkansas -v- Minny, the last time Minny competed for the Big 10 title much less won one was 40 years ago. They shared a title with Purdue, I believe, in 1967.

    "....."Thank God for the SEC".

Oh really now.....0-8 would indicate perhaps a different feeling among Buckeye fans.

.....and to think that without our woeful showing the Big 10 record -v- the SEC would be overwhelmingly in favor of the Big 10.

Name one other conference in the world that can say they would be better without that weak sister of a football program at Ohio State!

Game, set, match - Big 10!

Actually BT OSU is only 0-2 vs. the SEC since 2001.

That would make the recent score go from 12-10 SEC to a 10-10 tie.

As I said...only OSU out of the Big Ten has done well in BCS Bowls...until last year that is. :)

...and Florida is 2-2, LSU 1-1, Bama 0-1, TN 1-1, Aub 2-1, Ark 0-2 and Ga 2-0 against the Big 10 since 2001....evidence of a supremacy? Nonsense.....

If your point is that the SEC has done quite well in games against other conferences I would agree. Well done....if your point is that given that the SEC has done so well against other conferences in bowls since 2001 therefore that provides compelling evidence that the SEC is the pre-eminent conference in the land in spite of its less than stellar record against the Big 10 in head-to-head match-ups, that just doesn't fly......until the SEC proves itself superior on the field against their Big 10 counterparts - which it has not done - then such rhetoric is just that....

As it relates to your incessant shots against the Buckeyes, in the midst of your SEC as a conference diatribe and your USC is not a conference rebuke to Corey, I might add that we are also not a conference. Make up your mind....

If however, as it obviously is, it is your intent to find ways to continue to belittle my alma mater, I would suggest to you that there are others on this board whose teams have given my Buckeyes vastly more serious beatings. They range from State College to Ann Arbor to West Lafayette and the West Coast and points in between. I have searched through the posts over the years and have failed to find them gleefully pi$$ing all over me and my Buckeye friends and pointing out our failings......why is that?

There is no denying that Florida beat Ohio State decisively, there is also no denying that Buckeye Terry has always acknowledged that fact. There is also no denying Buckeye Terry's statistics about other matchups between the Big 10 and the SEC.

The Big 10 win in the Citrus Bowl was Penn State over Tennessee if I remember correctly. That was the same Tennessee team that the Gators had to rally from behind and get a sack late in the game to take the Vols out of field goal range. Florida won that game 21-20.

We also needed a blocked field goal to beat S. Carolina 17-16.

The Gators had to score a late TD against FSU and then hold them on a pass to the endzone as the game was ending to win that game 21-14. This win coming over a not so hot FSU team.

The Gators won close and ugly a number of times during the season. But we saved our best game of the season for the BCS Championship game.

That made the Gators better than the best in the Big 10 on that day. But it seems that Terry's arguments on behalf of the Big 10 are valid also.

The way I feel about this is that I am glad the Gators play in a very good conference, yes in my mind the best, however I don't see any proof we are so superior that I need to brag about it too much as Terry's points are very valid.

Having said all that, if we want to talk about the best team in the country over the last five years or so that has to go to So Cal hands down.

    Just my humble opinion.

Bill, I agree. If I'm not mistaken, ESPN just did a piece ranking the best teams of the past decade which gave the Trojans their vote as well....

I agree on SouCal as the best program since 2001 but last year the Trogs couldn't get it done vs. UCLA.

"Ohio State saves the Big Ten from complete embarassment. ( in BCS Bowls)

The rest of the league owes the Bucks."

I also said the above and mean it.

OSU has been the flag bearer of the Big Ten since 2001 and I only state the facts when reciting the OSU record vs. the SEC in bowls as a point of debate.....not to belittle OSU.

Again....these are not MY claims of SEC superiority. I am debating the positive merits of a CFN article that claims this however.

When challenged with numbers that support a differing opinion then I try to use supporting numbers for my point of view.

Usually articles like CFN wrote are written with some validity in mind.

What crap.....let's review from the beginning
But since I mentioned what? The debate was regarding the superiority of the SEC -v other conferences....

I try to deflect the shot with some humor at which point you respond with -
WTF? Was once not enough for you? Then you respond to Corey's point about USC by asserting that USC is not a conference ...... surely it doesn't occur to you that neither is Ohio State?

The debate continues about conference records and then -
Again, I make an effort to deflect your noise with humor, then there is more -

    Point of debate my a$$...

Nowhere in the discussion do I take shots at at any individual school in isolation...... The debate was about the evidence backing the assertions of SEC supremacy as a conference.....after your rebuke to Corey that USC was not a conference the only person debating an individual school was you taking great pains to point out the shortcomings of Ohio State...... again I ask, Why is that?

"We are talking about BCS bowl records since 2001 of conference elite members (and ND) here BT but since you mentioned it how about that 0-8 bowl record Ohio State carries vs. the SEC?"

Well BT....if you were a fan of Michigan debating with the same numbers that you have presented it still may be a valid point for me to make because OSU has been the only team with any BCS success out of the Big Ten since 2001. If the best that the Big Ten has to offer in the BCS Bowls has no wins vs. the SEC in any bowl that sure jumps out in a startling way.

It would seem that as a fan of that school you would find that the SEC has been a might tough as a bowl opponent and maybe that lends valididty to the "SEC is presently superior" article that CFN presented.

My apologies if it appears too centered on OSU but they certainly are a key focal point of the Big Ten argument in this debate.

Understand BT that I am surrounded up here in Big Ten/ND country and that's all I have heard for the last 27 years.

There are still dumba**es I run into who are inexplicably pissed at Florida for even playing in the BCS Championshionship game last year.

Somehow their beloved Michigan who couldn't even win their conference and got their asses handed to them by USC and gave up 74 points in their last 2 games are still more worthy than Florida was.

That's the kind of mentality that makes me fully enjoy and embrace articles like the one I posted to start this topic.

    Nonsense.....

It doesn't matter a flip where you live....the grace, courtesy and humility that others have displayed here on this board in situations similar to your own has no address. Quit using that as a copout. You are just rude because it must give you pleasure and you choose to be. There are no excuses....

You can tell a lot about someone in how they handle defeat. You can tell even more in how they handle victory.

Hey guys, it's been a really long time since I posted on this board but I really wanted to get in on this debate. I hate that it sort of turned into something personal because I think this is a very relevant subject. First of all, for those who have forgotten (probably everyone) my allegiance lies with Tennessee. I love SEC football and it is my personal opinion that it is the best conference in the nation in football and I don't think it's even close. That is simply my opinion, however, the Big 10 had a nice run of things last year in bowl games and I have to give them credit. I know that bowls are often used to determine which conference is better but I don't think it's an accurate measure of a conference's true strength. When you're playing a month after the regular season ends I think you have to take everything with a grain of salt. That being said, I think you can watch an SEC football game and then watch a Big 10 football game and visibly see the difference in overall talent. Just my opinion.

AQ, welcome.....I respect your opinion and hold the SEC in the highest regard, but imho, the only true test of who is better or not is the one that takes the place on the field - straight-up, head to head.

If indeed as you suggest there is a true visible difference in overall talent, one has to assume that over time it would manifest itself on the field. It has not......Otherwise aren't we simply saying....yes, I know you won, but we're better than you? Better how?

Surely as a reasonable person, given the results on the field in head-to-head matchups, you can understand why some would have a different opinion.

Best of luck to your Vols this year.....

    Buckeye T,

There is a "Don Corleone" quality to your reasoning that I can certainly appreciate. 8)
