I don't necessarily have anything against Virginia Tech although their fans constantly rib Tennessee fans in this area but has that program ever won a truly big game on a national scale? They're a really nice program and this season I wish Tennessee had a defense like theirs but how overblown is that program because of the lovefest ESPN shows them every chance they get? I'm not just talking about post-tragedy lovefest either. This has been going on for years now. On the other hand, I thought for about 57 minutes of this game, Matt Ryan was possibly more overblown than Virginia Tech has ever been. Under pressure he looked no better than Sean Glennon. And if it's possible, he may have looked worse. Then he has time to throw and he is magnificent. He gets into a rhythm and is able to avoid the rush and carve up that secondary. I'm definitely not sold that he is the best player in the nation and, in fact, I would say he definitely is not, but what a gutsy performance! Good win by BC. Will anybody beat them until they get blown out in the NC game by one of the big boys?
You know, I thought after I typed that that you might get offended by it. Let's face it though, BC is not a traditional college football power. They're a nice team and unfortunately they are what Tennessee's program is headed towards at best. However, I think you know what I mean and maybe I'm wrong, maybe this year BC could win it all including a game against the LSUs, Oklahomas, Ohio States, etc. of the college football world. Heck, a lot stranger things have happened this year. That came across as a sort of low blow I guess and I apologize. However, I think BC, judging from what I saw last night, is devoid of any true standout players other than Ryan. Sure, they held Tech to 10 points but that's not exactly a top flight offense you're lookin' at there. The top flight D of Virginia Tech made Ryan look very ordinary for virtually the entire game before relenting to give him his "Heisman moment." I'm saying if you take the "big boy" D of VT and pair it with a "big boy" O BC would have serious problems, IMO. That's all.
Aquila, First, let me emphasize that Joel looks at the world through Boston/New England-colored glasses, so if BC currently is a "big boy" according to the rankings, he'll show his pride, which is exactly how we all feel about our respective loyalties. He loves to banter and needle about the things important to him, and he takes as much as he gives, which is what makes him one of the most fun guys on this board. Second, I want to compliment you on your insights and analysis, not just in this topic but in others also. You are even-handed and very knowledgeable. As biased as I am against BC, I have to agree with you on Ryan's ability and leadership and Heisman potential. This is a season without standout players, and at this point he has as good a chance as any. Of course, playing on the east coast doesn't hurt him at all when it comes to the media votes. Regarding the BC team, I attended the ND-BC game a couple of weeks ago. As bad as ND is this year, we were in that game and had a chance to win. It was critical mistakes that blew our chances, not head-to-head play. I won't bore you with details. Suffice to say, I concluded after that game that BC is a pretender in the NC picture despite their so-far unblemished record. IMO BC's success to date emphasizes how weak the ACC is this year. I was hoping VT would burst the bubble, but they allowed BC back into the game at the end. BC possibly could go all the way to the NC game, but the way VT's defense handled them most of the game shows that they don't have the speed to compete with the LSUs, the USCs and even the Oklahomas of this year. Time will tell, but I still contend that I'll be shocked if they go through the remainder of the season undefeated. One thing I'll say about BC, and it hurts to say it, I like their coach. What little I've seen and heard of him, he's a class guy. I liked it better whan Tom Coughlin was their coach. He was an easy guy to dislike.
Sorry Joel, BC is way overrated. They haven't played anybody good so far. Look at what LSU did to Va.Tech. Va. Tech is a nice team but not a top 10 team. Notre Dame was still in the game with BC in the 4th Qtr. Mich, USC, Purdue are all better than Ga. Tech of the teams we've played. They have just had a lucky draw schedulewise this year. BC Sucks!! Your loyal pal Terry
I'm coming to JIF's aid here. BC is as good as anyone else this year. I think a lot of the sacred cows of college football are down . BC doesn't owe anyone an apology. My ratings are 1: LSU 1A: Florida 2: BC 3: Ohio State 4 Etc: Everyone else I didn't research this but I also think BC usually wins their bowl games. That is a concept that is foreign to us Irish fans.
 Gentleman please....BC is very real. The MONSOON Th night slowed them down. Anytime a team can go into that VT ( PIT) and win on a Thursday night is a HUGE happening!. Today, when JOPA beats OHOH State..BC will be number one! jif.
I like your rankings George. I also was very impressed with BC's ability to survive VT at VT in such miserable circumstances after getting behind and staying there most of the game. I think UF may deserve your lofty assessment but the defense is still a question and they will need to start making the plays they have the physical gifts to make.....like stopping LSU on just one pivotal 4th down. I am not sure anyone will survive undefeated so your list could get turned upside down with a whole new cast of characters before it's over.
Jiffer do you even know what a Hoagie is??? That's what you used to think the Va. Tech team mascot was, I wonder if you even know where Blacksburg is or have ever seen a game played there even on TV!!!! BC would not beat Ohio State, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC, and a few more...they are a fraud my man!!! your pal T. ps...congrats on another Sox win, they are not a fraud they are the best!!!
T.all i know about Vermont Tech is they are located some where in the Backwoods of America! Hicksvilleusa? Keep an eye on BC LOL! jiffer
